Now I am back with a question about a partition/half wall in the kitchen. We are somewhat certain we shall demo the half wall and try to make the attached island a longer attached island, but my mother's voice warning me about losing storage space has me concerned. Should we instead try to get the wall to go up to the ceiling? It just seems so silly to have it only part-way up. We are also not sure if we can find a matching piece of granite to keep the countertop seamless. Oy. The cabinets are depressingly dark, so we will want to repaint those at some point - I would also LOVE a new countertop since the rounded edges and decorative island supports/buttresses (are those even necessary??) are sooo not our taste, but it's 'fine' and a redo would be expensive so I think for now I'm stuck with it. Any advice on cabinet colors would be appreciated too - I was thinking perhaps a light grey or a dark lower and white upper with some glass doors to lighten things a bit. Would it be too ridiculous to add cabinets to the existing ones so they're all the same height? (More storage and more modern!) (I apologize for the lack of photos! Keep your eye tuned to the right side of each photo and you can catch a glimpse of the partition wall. It has about three small cabinets and a microwave attached to it; I think we can move the microwave into the pantry.) For those curious, our other decisions have been (or rather, will likely be) white on the walls, a white backsplash, perhaps subway tile or another unoffensive shape, and I'm pushing for black trim (!) but we'll see how it looks with the cream colored tile. I also want a fridge that is cabinet depth - the closest door next to the fridge is a small pantry. Ultimately we're aiming for chic character, something we love and can live with for the next ~six years, but near-universal appeal. A: Hi Darcy, I believe the best option here would be to take down the wall in question. The issues for storage, colour, seating etc can be solved by putting in an island. By doing this you can also go with a different colour cabinetry and/or counter top as we are now doing many kitchens with an opposite colour to the perimeter. I hope this helps you. **Q: Paint Color Suggestions** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am in the process of painting my bathroom which has ugly tiles but I am stuck with them. What colors do you suggest I use ?? A: OK .....firstly, you CAN paint the tiles, it is not cheap to do but it is cheaper than replacing the tiles themselves. Go to your hardware store ant let them know what you are painting and they will give you all of the options available to you. Secondly, if you choose to keep the tile, paint the walls an off white but with a touch of grey in it. The reason is that gray is complimentary to yellow and will help reduce the impact of how awful the tiles are. Also add accent towel in crisp white again to detract from the yellow. Jane Baker @This Staged House **Q: Need input - paint table or just put a mirror or cover on top** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have this old table that I use for the entry from the garage, the calendar and keys area. I am thinking of painting the table because the area is dark where the table stands and it's difficult to see the detail on the legs. Also the top is very damaged from water and needs work. I am thinking if sealing and priming and then painting with a metallic paint like BM Metallics in silver. Would like some input and ideas.Also included a photo of some of the kitchen that is adjacent. Thanks so much! A: Hey Laurie, i would paint the table lighter for sure and take down all the articles off the wall replacing them with a medium sized mirror. With the lighter paint and the natural light from the window picking up in the mirror i think you will see quite a difference. **Q: Would You Purchase This Funky Sofa?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Ok, I need a few opinions! This is probably going to be a "love it or hate it" situation, but at the price I could get this retro, mustard yellow sofa -- around $250 - I think I want to give it a go! Our style is already pretty eclectic, but I've never ventured into yellow territory before. We have light gray walls (Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter) and dark hardwood floors. So, what do you think!? A: Go with off white walls ( gray lake 2138-70 from Benjamin moore). Use accent/decorative pieces in silver- grey and yellow of varying depths of color.....they DO NOT have to match the couch exactly and it is better they do not. I would suggest cushions with perhaps chevron patterns in grey and white. A glass and silver coffee table would also look stunning in front of this piece. This piece of furniture also lends itself to an art deco era and would go beautifully with a mirrored piece of furniture ......perhaps side tables.
