**Q: Skylights** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type of skylight s were used for the overhang?

A: It was custom-made and it's double glazed with an aluminum frame. So you should find out who does that kind of work in your area and also in your jurisdiction there maybe requirements regarding insulation values and that will affect the types of frames that can be used etc.  this was in San Francisco. Are you in San Francisco?

I was just wondering how come there is no baseboard on both sides of the flooring. What has to be done to get rid of the baseboard? I absolutely hate baseboards.

A: Yes, not having baseboards can be quite beautiful.
The function of a baseboard is to protect the wall from scuffs, dents from vacuum cleaning, moving furniture etc.
Most homes are sheathed on the inside with gypsum board which is can be easily dented. Its surface is a paper cardboard which gets painted or covered with some other finish. If the finish is not hard, then the paper layer can be torn and then the soft gyp interior broken and perhaps powdered.
So there are several ways around not having baseboards. One is to detail the baseboards so they inset and are flush with the gypsum wall surface. This can be done but is usually time consuming and thus labor intensive. Another is to use a hard wall material in place of (eg. cement plaster) or else in front of (eg tile or stone) the gyp board.
And yet another is simply to ignore the baseboard protective issues and have your builder take the gyp board to the floor finish and keep your fingers crossed! In some areas, you might be able to predict very little scuffling. And in other areas, damage could expected.

**Q: love the wood** *(in Photo Questions)*

if i wanted a floor exactly like this,  what would i ask for?  (type of wood and shade)  and how much for a 400 sq-ft space?

A: Chris and can't help you much here.  It partly depends on where you live and your supply sources and or your installer.  You could start by talking to local flooring contractors or local finish wood supply companies, making inquires about hemlock and fir flooring.

**Q: My question is about the wood floor.** *(in Photo Questions)*

I have a lighter butterscotch wood flooring in all my downstairs and on my stairs, however I could not exactly match the loft area (area upstairs in front of the bedrooms kinda like the an hall way) when I got ready to do it. The wood in the loft area is a darker butterscotch. Is this a no no in decorating?

A: There are no rules,but there is finding out what you like.  Flooring coloration can be continuous and similar, contrasting, contrasting with pattern, totally random and so forth.  One of the things you can do here on Houz is look about and see what you like and don't like.  In the above pic, the diagonal boards are random variations on pine and hemlock, but the edging was done in fir as were the stairs.  So it a kind of random but trimmed condition.  The budget was minimal, so there are a lot of different woods involved.

**Q: Will condensation happen behing the tin in the bathroom?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I want this look in my guest bath but my husband is worried about condensation behind the tin.  Is this a problem for mold to form?

A: This is a 1/2 bath, so it just has toiletry and sink fixtures.  If you have a bathtub or a shower this might become an issue.  Good ventilation as in sufficiently capable exhaust fan(s) or operable windows would help.  The metal here is galvanized so rust per se is not an issue.  But as you may know, moisture either direct or as steam, causes the galvanizing to cloud up over time and loose it glass.  Some like this, some do not.

There are metal tiles and metallic-ceramic tiles, as well as other type of metals that can be used as interior finishes, that do not have the issues that galvanized sheet metal has.

A: Thank you.   Here in San Francisco handrails like this are custom-made by ironwork shops that get called to the job, takes measurements, fabricate the railings in their shop, and install them.
