> Residential kitchen remodel in San Francisco Bay Area - We couldn't be happier with our redesigned kitchen! Sandra was professional, very receptive to our design desires, and was able to design our dream kitchen while staying within our budget and the existing footprint of our rather small kitchen. Her expertise and amazing sense of design were invaluable in choosing our new kitchen cabinets, granite counters and tile back splash. Our tile installer commented to me that in his 35 years of tile work, the design and tiles in our back splash were the best he had ever seen. Sandra worked closely with us in choosing the manufacturer of our cabinets and consulted with us on wood choice and finish and the best utilization of our space to meet the needs of our family of 6 and very large extended family. Her plan on cabinet installation and measurements was perfect. She knew exactly what we needed to do to utilize two corners that were previously dead space and this resulted in gaining much storage in the two new turn table cabinets in these corners. Since having a double oven was a goal of ours, Sandra's knowledge and expertise enabled us to move a doorway slightly and place the double ovens in our new kitchen. She designed our lighting plan which involved removing the old style fluorescent light box and removing the dropped ceiling. We gained six extra inches of height and Sandra knew just where to place our can lights. Sandra also helped with our choice of a ceiling fixture and two pendant lights that we wanted for ambient lighting. It was important that we have a desk area in front of our window, and with Sandra's experience we now enjoy a beautiful desk that is counter height so that we can use it both for studying and for entertaining as a buffet area. With the removal of our former window, we were able to put in the garden window that I desired for my orchids and view into our back yard. When we were choosing appliances, Sandra's guidance saved us countless hours trying to figure out on our own what we should be looking for. Throughout the whole process from start to finish of our remodel, Sandra worked beautifully with us, our main contractor and his crew. All of our work was done to code and Sandra was very knowledgeable of what California requires.
>
> We have seen the flawed results in friends' homes when they have chosen to try to remodel their kitchens on their own, used home improvement stores' design services, or gone the route of using very inexpensive and poorly made materials with installers who are not careful and experienced. We believe that Sandra saved us from money misspent on wrong choices for our kitchen. We are grateful every single day that we made the wise choice to use Sandra Varelmann of Weave Ideas. Our kitchen is not only beautiful, but it meets all of our needs and .brings us joy and happiness every day!

> I highly recommend Sandy Varelmann and have actually already suggested to a friend that she talk to Sandy about redecorating her home.
>
> Before our remodelimg project began in Arizona, we realized that we needed an interior designer to help with the planning stages. Sandy was always professional, kept our budget in mind and guided us through the design proess in a manner that helped to reduce our stress level and made the decision making easier.
>
> All through the design process, Sandy was available to meet in person, at our home or cabinet and tile showrooms. Her expertise in color and interior idesign is evident, but being responsive to the details of the project helped to cover the many facets of the remodeling that we hadn't thought about.
> Sandy returned phone calls in a timely manner and we often used e-mails when it was appropriate.
>
> Throughout the time we worked together, Sandy never make me feel that what I liked didn't matter. She would oftern remind me that it was my home and ,ultimately, my decision.

## Community Q&A

**Q: What is the brand of the stone or stone veneer and what is the color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the name brand of the stone and what is the color. It is spectacular

A: Thanks! I obtained the stone from http://vannesstone.com/
440-338-4444.

**Q: Love the chandelier. Can you tell me who makes it?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The chandelier is a Schoenbek - please let me know if you would like more information on this fixture - happy to help. It's awesome in person.

**Q: Need help with window treatments** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have a bow window in my living room, sliders in the dining area and a window above the kitchen sink. All of the windows face south and look out onto the back yard, deck and in ground swimming pool. We don't have any shade on this side of the house so the sun exposure is intense. I would like some suggestions for window coverings. My home is about 22 years old and it is a ranch. We live in Michigan.

A: 3M makes a window film that is applied directly to windows to reduce the sun's damage. I would suggest considering this film layered with a type of window treatment. Could be a curved rod with traversing drapes for the bow (use same approach on all windows.) Could be shades. I think it depends on your style - clean modern - shades, traditional - curtain or combine in layers - shades and curtains. The film will help a lot.

**Q: Should I change my whole idea for my fireplace?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We started painting our previously brown wood fireplace and were going to paint it white. Now, we realized we may want to go for more of a modern look and paint it black. Thoughts? Should we paint the brick? If so- what color? Also, there is brown trim around the top and bottoms of the room. Keep them brown? Paint them white? Or just get new white crown moldings? Thanks!

A: Scope creep. :) Painting the fireplace black will create a big section of black - I think you have to ask yourself if the room can carry that. I would suggest facing the brick with cut sections of some kind of stone - like a black marble - that will give you a nice clean look. I think you can cut it and apply over the brick. Use marble floor tile. What is the hearth?
As for the crown...then will you replace the base too - I think they are going to need to be the same? What is adjacent to this space - white painted or stained. Once you start changing over you need a good break point.

**Q: Help me choose a backsplash for kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Galley kitchen - high gloss white cabinets, absolute black tile floor, charston quartz for countertops, and probably pale yellow paint for walls (same color as small dining area that kitchen opens into) - questions: go with white to match cabinets? seems simpler than going dark, what with the charston having a lot of different colors in it (black, brown, specks of cobalt) and the black floor - but I really like the black/white/black/white look (floor/cabinet/backsplash/cabinet) and the contrast of the white cabinets against a dark background. Just having so much trouble selecting a tile for a dark backsplash that goes with the charston. Suggestions? For a closer look at charston, google Cambria charston....the image I uploaded is of a countertop I found on the internet....another houszzie has uploaded a photo of it elsewhere as well. Thanks so much!

A: Take a peek at this project that I did - white cabinets, dark counter and a marble back splash. It might give you an idea of what marble with a black vein would look like.
