Undoubtedly that extended the process, mostly due to longer lead times on things like cabinets, etc. However, I was able to get the selections completed with their suppliers fairly easily and I can’t say enough about Chris and Steve and their attention to detail. I selected some live edge open shelving to be installed in the new kitchen and as they knew it was an important design feature in the new open concept layout they worked personally with me to ensure that each board was not only extremely secure but placed in the exact location so as to show off it’s beautiful graining & texture. We took each challenge (like the big hole in the existing travertine from removing the old island) and turned them into design features. I would definitely recommend Travis and his crew. There is a pass-through wall that I am removing and installing a peninsula eating counter. I would appreciate any advice. I have photos and diagrams of the project so far. Thanks PICS :http://imgur.com/a/OyFVc A: You will need to either re frame around the 2 - 1/2" copper water supply lines or move them inside the wall so they don't stick out into the room **Q: Which handles for ball catch french doors?** *(in Remodeling)* I just installed a set of 60x80 15-Lite Pine French Interior Doors. These doors are ball catch. I'm trying to figure out the best way to approach the handle hardware. Since they are ball catch, I was thinking to install 4 inactive (dummy) handles to open and close the doors from both sides. But I was also thinking I could install an active handle and strike plate for the right side, and put some inactive handles (or none at all) on the left. Not sure what the standard and/or most practical approach is. Any advice would be much appreciated. Attached is are pictures from inside the room they are on of the doors in general and the ball catch hardware. A: Hey, it's the Home Depot Special! We've installed that door. We've had clients do it both ways that you are talking about. The normal method would be 4 dummies but either way works. You definitely need to make the 2nd door immobile if you go the other route. if you do 4 dummies, you can also put a sliding pin lock up above to make it lockable if you need to. **Q: Kraftmade Vantage vs Aspect by Shiloh** *(in Remodeling)* I am in the process of remodeling our kitchen. I have two lines of cabinetry that I am choosing between. Does anyone have a recommendation or comment. Also shaker style vs raised panel. Is that just a personal preference? I will go with painted white, no glaze. Thanks for your input. A: Yes shaker vs. raised is personal preference. I don't know much about the Shiloh brand, but assume if it is comparable to Kraftmade that it is a pretty good cabinet line. We have installed many Kraftmade kitchens over the years and never really saw many problems with them. **Q: Need reco for an inexpensive bathtub for a kids bathroom** *(in Remodeling)* Can anyone recommend a decent quality but inexpensive bathtub for a kids bathroom? Thanks! A: Sterling makes a very nice "Vikrel" tub! it is typically less than $300 and it is deeper than most tubs, wider than a lot and some models have a sloped arm rest inside to make it more relaxing to sit in. We have it in our house and our 2 children take baths in it all the time! it's a great tub, we have installed it in many many remodels over the last 5 years. **Q: 500 square foot addition** *(in Remodeling)* hi I live in los angeles, California and we are looking to add 500 square feet. we already have a 400 square foot patio area that was permitted years ago, foundation already laid. we wanted to convert into a family room, open space by knocking out a wall and enclosing. Any idea on cost. we would probably need framing, insulation, electrical, etc... we are getting plans designed now. I also plan on subcontracting myself to save money. A: I would be surprised if you could get it done for less than $200/ft. Probably more like $250-$400/ft range which puts you $125K-$200K range. you will save some of this cost if you contract everything yourself, but make sure you check, then check again and check a third time then ask your friends to check you and your uncle, your neighbor... HAHA really though there are a million things to think about and not overlook. If you miss something and have to go back and fix it or add it, it will be very costly! **Q: Replace or Retread particleboard staircases?** *(in Remodeling)* My split-entry home was built in the 70's. The builder used particleboard (ugh!) for both sets of entry stairs. Over the years the lower stairs have deteriorated (sagging, splitting) since they are over a crawlspace. I'm replacing my LR wall-to-wall with hardwood so it's time to redo the stairs as well. I've gotten several estimates. Most of the the flooring guys have recommended reinforcing the particleboard stairs, then adding retreads. Most of contractors recommend replacing the entire staircase with a pre-built customized stairway. I only plan to be in the house for another 4-5 years, so I'm torn. Should I... do the right thing (full replacement) and spend $$$$, or save $1500 and have the flooring guy reinforce the particleboard, then add the retreads? What would you do? Thanks!!! A: I had a similar problem in my own home. I replaced the entire set. You don't want height issues and it will make for a much better install of the new flooring, treads and risers if you have a solid foundation to work off of.
