## Community Q&A

**Q: Fireplace options - new brick or wood mantel or...?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would love some opinions on how to deal with our fireplace, cosmetically speaking. We bought this house 3 years ago, and the fireplace brick was already painted white. The fireplace has an insert that is a cheesy electrical thing, which we use only rarely, and someday, we hope to get the chimney and firebox safe for actual woodburning use. But in the meanwhile, I'd just like it to look better.

Also, the configuration is weird. The fireplace is right at the intersection of the base of the stairway, and entryway between the living room and dining area/kitchen. Hopefully the pictures will explain this better than my words :-)  But the upshot is that the mantel that was previously attached stuck out too far (9 inches) - and I would hit my shoulder if I rounded the corner too quickly. Not cool. There is also a built-in shelving thing on the opposite side of the fireplace, I've tried painting it but am not entirely satisfied and would like all of this to tie in together better. This is a 1920s house, with lots of nice wood trim (never painted). 

One more thing: when we updated the kitchen, we exposed the brick chimney that runs behind the fireplace (but is not the fireplace chimney - it was the chimney for the boiler).  I love that old brick, but a brief investigation shows that the fireplace brick is uglier, so removing the paint wouldn't give a good look. The area above the fireplace is just plaster.

Mantel is now removed. And you can see the built-in that is to the right of the fireplace, plus the window trim that is present throughout the house:

To summarize my fireplace ideas so far:

Leave it painted white, and add a wood mantel that doesn't wrap around the corners, with wood corbels to keep consistent with the rest of the wood trim in the house
Add new thinset brick on top of the existing brick to make it kind of match the exposed brick in the kitchen, and then do some kind of mantel (painted white? or wood that matches the trim in the house?)
Paint the fireplace and the built-ins an entirely different color? And again - what to do with a mantel?

I would love some opinions on this. Thank you in advance!

A: You have a mid-century vibe mixed with traditional woodwork. So keep working to eclectically mix the old with newer.  Don't let the dark overpower the room with more dark wood work as that would visually decrease the size of your space.  For the front of the fireplace hire a handyman to "frame it in" to bring it flush with the side edge brick.  After, there are two ways you can go:   Frame it all top to bottom so that it can be drywalled completely and you can cover with the entire surface with your choice of surfaces. An example may be a large-sized 4x8 matte finish stone/granite tile (vertically installed) in subtle grays for a contemporary look, or another option is to create a 6" ledge by building out the bottom only and the ledge becomes your mantel. Cover the bottom with a gray plaster finish to match the cabinets to the right and on the top use  wide vertical plywood planks (Wider than Shiplap) painted white with a simple horizontal white painted 1x6 crown at top. You can cover the ledge with wood as well if you go with the wood top.
On the other side of the wall, cover the red brick chimney stack with white paint or frame/drywall to create a white structural element to match your countertop. Replace the current shelving to make a bigger and more practical statement.  Install more courses of  white subway tile to go up to 24 inches above the counter on both sides of the range, behind the range take the subway tile up to 42-44 inches. Hire a handyman to make and install two shorter 3" x length of material x 6" deep boxed floating shelves on each side of the range at the lower level and one long (the entire length) Shelf at the 42-44" height. By sure to let the shelf craftsman that they need to support heavy weight so he will anchor them appropriately into the wall. If you plan to keep the butcher block top on the island, be sure to use the same color stain on the wood of the new shelving, or you could go with a stronger color on these.  These are simple and easily achieved ideas to get you started.   L
