It had never been a working fireplace, it was way too shallow to burn real wood and would never meet current safety standards or building codes. > I made a million phone calls and Jonathan was the only one who went out of his way to help us out on short notice and he fit us in on his one day off on Sunday. He came out, took measurements and figured out what he'd need to do to safely retrofit this old falling apart brick fireplace into a gas fireplace. A: Thank you! It is a manufactured stone veneer. I am very particular about stone selection and placement so I don't have visible cut ends or small pieces cut to fill in gaps. It takes longer, but I don't take the shortcuts that make it look like fake stone. You shouldn't be able to tell just by looking at it if it's done right. I designed and built the mantle myself, too. **Q: The fire basket is 410mm at the front** *(in Photo Questions)* The sides taper towards the back. It has a chimney and used to burn coal. Will this fire basket fit the aperture. Please advise, Kind Regards Tom A: Thomas, this is a Direct Vent Gas Insert that would take the place of your existing coal basket. It is a sealed system and uses two 3" flexible aluminum vents which run the entire length of your chimney with a termination cap installed at the top. Some amount of deconstruction of the original firebox and removal of any obstructions above it leaving to the flue is required. The process is relatively simple for a very experienced installer. Minimum cavity requirements vary a bit depending on the front chosen but the Windsor Arch pictured requires 25 1/4" h × 20" w x 11 1/2" d. Enlarging the available opening is possible in most cases. I've installed many of these over the last 16 years and would be glad to assist with advice. I assume you are not in the South Eastern U.S. The manufacturer is Valor.
