**Q: Design/Drawing Costs** *(in Design Dilemma)*

There may be too many factors to answer this question, but, roughly what would it cost to have an architect create a drawing similar to this?

A: I typically charge a single floor starting at $390 for a set of plans to take to the permitting department.  This includes a rough HVAC, electrical and plumbing plan view only.  If elevations, material list and other design information and help is required, then the pricing goes up from there.  It really depends on the scope and what the client is expecting.  If the client has an empty space, or rough idea of what they want, there is still a lot of thought that goes into developing a plan. 
A question that I get a lot is why so much, what do you do?
At least an hour meeting with the client to get a feel for your needs, budget, wants.  Measure and view space, if applicable.
minimum hour developing criteria matrix, bubble diagrams, sketches.
3 hours for hand drafted drawing or 2 hours basic CAD drawing

**Q: What Design Trends "Jumped the Shark" in 2016?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Shiplap by Joanne Gaines "jumped the shark" for me half way through the last season. What design trends do you think have become ridiculous during 2016 and will be completely out by 2017?
And for those too young to remember the Fonz in Happy Days, the term derives from the moment when Fonz jumped the sharks on water ski's. Jumping the shark” is an idiom used to describe the moment a television show begins a decline in quality, signaled by a particular scene, or episode, in which the writers use some type of gimmick in an attempt to keep viewers' interest.

A: Trends are so area specific, I'm a big believer if you love it put it in!  I've heard a, a-lot of rheotric about "if this isn't your forever home don't put your stamp on it".  If you are going to live in a space for more then 2 years, MAKE IT YOURS!  Yes consider future owners, but you count!  Your personal tastes count, consider future owners but don't try to tread their minds.
I am not "over" any trends per-say, but I do think builders need to pump the breaks on the edison bulb trend.  That being said, I love them in select spaces and have a number of clients who love them still,  They do have a really nice warm appeal to them, I don't think they should be everywhere and if used sparingly can add a sense of warmth to any space.  
The main trend which I've seen in lighting since 2011 is the fizz glass (bubbles encased in glass) I loved the first 3 fixtures I saw and sold them enthusiastically, but now they are literally everywhere!  Costco has them. Home depot has them.  I've seen them for way to long.

**Q: New bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello

I am in the process of finishing a master bath remodel. We used virtue tile on floor and in the shower. The counter top was just installed and it doesn't look like I thought it would. It's whiter than the tile and the pattern is different than the tile and I am hoping it doesn't clash. Any thoughts?

A: I think the counter-top was the right choice,  Too much of the same scale pattern is not ideal.  Keeping the counter top a softer smaller scale pattern gives a better balance.

**Q: Shower Niche Slope** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi all, 

I have a niche in my shower that slightly slopes inwards. It was this way when we bought the house. Otherwise the shower is in good condition so please don't say redo it. Even if that's the only real solution, we're not going to redo it.

So what I was thinking was I could lay a tile on top of the existing niche bottom, using waterproof acrylic adhesive, and adjust the slope. Then instead of grout if silicone all the edges. Then to further waterproof the tile, I'd seal it. I'm thinking porcelain would be the most water resistant? I know water will go in there but it's not like it'll be submerged in water so I'm thinking this solution may be okay? 

What might be better than porcelain? Also I've been looking for larger tile that has a finished edge(bullnose or chamfered) and there isn't any. The tile size would have to be roughly 10" wide by 6" deep. Any suggestions?? Thank you!!!

A: I agree that a solid surface piece will be the most effective.  You can use a small grinder to take the original tile out (if water sat and got behind it, it will be even easier to remove then).  You can use a piece of kerdi band to ensure that its water proofed at that point.  You could probably get an off cut for a fairly reasonable price if you're not terribly picky on material/colour.  

There are a lot of different thicknesses available in solid surface 3/8" is the smallest I've seen.  Depending on the width of your niche you might be able to use a large scale tile instead.   I would call a good quality smaller  tile or counter company.  they are more likely to have a better solution.

A: it is tough to say from this photo.  But Levico, Crystal World have ones similar to this. I prefer the crystal used in Crystorama's collections.
