- 1,000 Ideabook Saves

As a registered architect in the states of Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina as well as the District of Columbia, Michael has designed projects ranging from modest additions to existing homes in urban neighborhoods to new waterfront estates in Maine and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. His previous work with other firms has been featured in Traditional Home, Washington Home and Design, Washingtonian, ArchitectureDC, and Washington Home and Garden.

Michael's portfolio of work encompasses a design philosophy of creating homes that reflect the desires of his clients; responds to the home’s specific site and context; and crafts architecture that is well-proportioned and intentional. He believes that a home should be designed for the functions of today and be built for future years of enjoyment and shelter.

Throughout the design process, Michael keeps the client's needs forefront in the project. He enjoys working with clients to learn about their unique functional problems and create spaces that meet their needs and solve their problems. He believes that teamwork amongst contractors, clients, interior designers and other professionals throughout the design and construction process will create a lasting and successful project.

**★★★★★ — Sew Hallie, LLC, July 2025**

> We feel really lucky that Mike agreed to take on the challenge of updating and renovating our 1950’s split level home in Bethesda, while understanding and staying true to the style of the house. The way he opened up doorways, added bigger windows and reconfigured the bedrooms and bathrooms makes the house feel larger, brighter and so much more enjoyable to navigate daily. Mike and Christian were able to fit in an en-suite primary bathroom that we hadn’t had before and now love. The highlight of the project though is the kitchen where they used gorgeous custom cabinetry to transform an unused and awkward area into a beautiful, functional space that completes the kitchen and truly makes it the heart of our house.
>
> Not only do we appreciate Mike’s talent as an architect but we were grateful to have his warm and reassuring personality leading the project. We were new to the renovation scene and Mike helped to set realistic expectations and was patient with our many questions and our need to talk over alternatives. He worked closely with Macon Construction to deliver high quality work with thoughtful details that we are still appreciating a year and a half in. We positively recommend Mike and Christian at MPR Architecture and will want them on our team for any future project!

**★★★★★ — Bev and Pete Robertson, July 2017**

> Mike is a talented architect with keen ability to translate your vision into a beautiful home plan. Mike began designing our conch style home after carefully reviewing the master planned community requirements and our desired home features. He listened to our dream and produced a sensational custom West Indies style conch home with a dose of southern charm. He is enthusiastic, efficient, and inspired. His exceptional customer care, detailed plan renderings, and his flexibility to adapt are all hallmarks of his ability. Mike is a true professional, his work is unsurpassed and we couldn't be happier with our home which is to be completed in July 2017!

**★★★★★ — Kara Johnson, June 2017**

> Mike was fantastic to work with. He was always very responsive and thorough. He came up with several custom design options for my project and made revisions based on my feedback so we arrived at the perfect plans for my home. He's a talented designer and a detail-oriented professional who provided very high quality plans and customer service. I have recommended him to colleagues and friends and will continue to recommend him.

> We have worked with Mike Rouse at MPR Architecture on two projects (a major addition to our home and a new screened porch + family-room renovation) and cannot recommend him highly enough. We are thrilled with the results of these projects, which reflect Mike's creativity, attention to detail, and classic design aesthetic. In both cases, he found clever solutions we never would have thought of to address some tricky constraints, and he made the improvements fit naturally with the existing design and structure of our home.
>
> Mike is a pleasure to work with and very responsive. He produced detailed drawings and elevations, handled the engineering issues (along with a colleague), and addressed the various permit requirements. He also came out periodically to check that the builders were on track.
>
> Hiring MPR Architecture is definitely one of the best investments we have made in our home.

  - Description: This addition to a five bedroom home allowed the clients to capture outdoor space with a new Three Season Porch. Storm windows extend the functionality of this space to the shoulder season of Fall and Spring. Simple traditional detailing, a gable end facade with an attached side bay reduces the scale to be more in keeping with the smaller cottage style home.

## Community Q&A

**Q: This is a beautiful screened porch, can you provide some info?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Approximately what is the size of the screened porch?
Can you provide a very general estimate of how much this cost to build?

A: Thank you! It was a joy to design with the clients.
The screen porch is approximately 16' x 16' which left room for a couch and two chairs, and a round dining table for 6. A rectangular table for 6 would work just as nicely.
Cost wise, the clients did not share the final cost with me, but for Washington, DC metro pricing, one could assume between $175 and $200/sf, or roughly $50,000. This cost is about average to high for a project like this, but the clients opted for storm windows to go over every screen as well, adding to the overall cost.
There's more information on my website. Check it out! www.mprarchitecture.com
