Our dilemma is how to achieve a contemporary look without replacing the white windows with black. It just isn't in the budget for now. We've seen two different stucco colors used with high contrast and like that look. We could paint and/or refinish the existing solid wood door. We would also want to make the columns much wider and more substantial with stone/wood. Any suggestions on exterior ideas, color combinations working with current windows would be much appreciated! A: Hello Allie, you have a beautiful home. The stucco and stone are a wonderful idea to modernize. A soft gray stucco that leans more towards the warmer tones, rather than blue or green tones could be beautiful. Can you remove the window grids or are they in between the glass. Remove them if you can, and paint trim black around the windows. The wood door could be enhanced with a richer stain. I would try not to paint it. Wood front doors are a natural element that compliments stonework. The house is very square/boxy looking with no soft lines. What would you think about cladding the columns with cedar as well adding some archway in the overhang, staining the same as door. The base of the columns can have rockwork also. **Q: Master Room Entrance Advise** *(in Design Dilemma)* Need advise on our master room entrance. The room entrance is right off the living room. We added a frame to avoid having a flat entrance/wall and give a sense of some privacy, I had the idea from a picture I found in Houzz (green wall picture). I included pictures of how so far the entrance looks but I am not sure if I like it ....but still want to add something. We’ll put a new door as well. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas or suggestions. Thanks! A: You might try eliminating the wing wall next to the window and blend the header into that wall. Then make the header longer to the right and put the wing wall down right side only. **Q: Shared Bathroom Layout** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, I'm about to install interior doors in a shared bathroom between two bedrooms and am having some trouble deciding the best option for door swings. I attached two options below first with both doors swinging out of the shared bath. The second has the door in bedroom 3 swinging into the bath avoiding the collision with the closet doors. For bedroom 2 I still have the door swinging in but the opposite direction. I really didn't want to have bedroom 2's door swing into the bathroom because of conflicts with the pocket door and traffic flow. Any advise would be greatly appreciated! A: What about using sliding barn door. **Q: Take it out? Leave it?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Here our pics of our new mountain home. We can’t decide how much to change. Just update paint, hard woods etc. or tear down the wall and open the kitchen up to the living space. If we tear it down, what sort of bar, counter should we replace it with? It seems so long....any suggestions? A: It is very stylish with the iron work in the upstairs area. You might consider just doing an approx. 4' cut out opening above the stove. It is probably a support wall and to open it up would require a post which might look awkward. With a pass through it gives you some privacy from noise and such in the kitchen but still gives you a connection to the family room. Gives you an open feel without sacrificing the character. **Q: mid-century pool/courtyard** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are looking for design ideas for our courtyard/pool area especially along the white wall. The house is a 1967 Sarasota School of Architecture structure. Thanks for all suggestions. A: What a beautiful space. Love it! It is difficult to tell by the picture, how much space you have between the edge of the pool and the wall. But here are a few ideas for your consideration. Thank you! add a planter against the wall maybe add a narrow bench against the wall with pillows. You could create a small table on each end of the bench to set drinks & candles on table for evenings. As well as a fire feature corner bench where you could possibly put your feet in the pool while sitting. Add fire feature on each side of the bench for evening. Do you have space to add plants on top of the wall as in this design. Add some metal décor on the wall. Using décor with words is also a nice design element Tile the wall. If you like more modern, tile can be added in a stacked pattern instead brick. You could add some wood on front of the wall to break it up. Put wood in strategic places as to not cover up the wall entirely. **Q: Tiled fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)* Help.. what can I do DIY about this ugly pink tiled fireplace ?? A: Hey Deborah, were you wanting to do a complete overhaul or just replace the tile. If you could please send more info, I can make some recommendations. Do you prefer traditional or modern. Thanksif you want to go more modern if you want to go with another color, this is a dark charcoal if you want to get rid of the raised area and go with a dark tile. You would have to remove the raised area, cover the lower area with cement board and tile over it. if you like brick, this will be more traditional this look can be done with a tile and a large one piece stone for sitting in front of the fp You can get a similar look with a dark or black tile for the surround and remove the raised area You could do a marble tile instead of a large slab to get a similar look.
