habitare design studio, inc. strives to thoughtfully meld the pragmatic issues of building a house—site, budget, building code, etc.—with the desire to create a home for a life well lived. As the sole proprietor of the studio, I pride myself on my relationship with my clients and I respect their choice to allow me to guide them through the process of altering the context of how they live their life. Recognizing that the design is but one element of a successful construction project, I depend on collaboration between the client, the contractor and myself to achieve the greatest possible results.

I believe that I didn’t choose residential design, but rather that it chose me. Growing up the son of a realtor, I tagged along to open houses whenever I could, drew house plans when bored and pored over house magazines until new editions came in the mail. Perhaps not the most self-aware, it wasn’t until after my first degree in studio art from Whitman College in Walla Walla, that I finally succumbed and enrolled at the University of Arizona College of Architecture in Tucson. Upon graduating in 1996, I moved to Missoula and worked for various architecture firms. To concentrate on the unique challenges of residential work, I started Habitare Design Studio, Inc. in 1999. When not in the studio, I may be found running the trails of the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area, road bike riding a quiet stretch of Glacier National Park or simply extolling the virtues of cantilevered beams to my children. Perhaps they won’t choose to design houses either, but you can’t blame a guy for trying.

> We approached Jeff for a redesign of our front porch wanting a more contemporary look. This small project turned into bringing the habitare design into the inside of our house for a full remodel. The time, questions asked, getting to know us and discovering my wife’s and I individual styles he was able to produce the blueprint to transform our house into our dream house. Jeff brought our 1970’s ranch home into the new millennium; removing a wall to gain the open concept we wanted and giving us the master bath of dreams. The most impressive part was the small details throughout the design, like the custom bench on our new porch. I couldn’t give a higher recommendation than the one for Jeff and habitare design.

> I can't say enough great things about working with Jeff, but let me try :) I loved that he took my crayon napkin drawing and made what I needed plus made it better. I felt heard and understood. He listened to my words of what I really needed in the space and THEN added artistic elements on top of that. For example, I said I really wanted French doors on the east wall, he said how about two sets of French Doors? I said WOW, yes please! His character, personality and disposition made him really easy to work with. He was also able to work really well with my contractor which made adjustments to the project go smoothly. Jeff was also timely and professional, but what I liked most was his artistic drive. Oh, and we really matched up with styles that we liked, both in historic buildings and modern construction so it was fun to look up ideas together.

> Jeff came to us at the advice of a friend. We found him to be creative and prompt with his designs, which have added beauty and value to our home. Throughout the construction process, he worked extremely well with the contractors and us, paying close attention to our ideas.
>
> Jeff undertook two large projects on our behalf. The first involved redesign of a front deck and a front entrance to our house. The entrance was converted from an uninviting wooden porch to an inviting stone walkway with stone retaining wall, brick stairs to the front door, and rows of lavender plants and attractive shrubs.
>
> We were so impressed with the results that we immediately commissioned him to redesign a back deck and patio. He turned a non-functional and labor-intensive deck into a functional living space. He re-imagined an integrated entrance to the house from the new 30-foot deck, providing additional light into our office. Because the project involved removing a door in a stairwell, we were concerned about losing ambient light. Jeff resolved this issue by designing a 3-panel window extending to the top of the stairwell, providing more light than previously. Jeff created for us a wonderful living space for dining, relaxing, and enjoying the glorious views of the mountains.
>
> We consider Jeff a design genius and highly recommend him for your home or business projects.

> We used Jeff for a major remodel: he created an outstanding, functional space. And then...we had to 1/2 the budget. Jeff went back and retooled the design and still gave us something gorgeous. He has an uncanny sense for detail, and is very "up" on current design trends. I have worked with other architect designers in Missoula and he is the very best in that he actually designs beautiful, functional spaces and not just functional spaces. I highly recommend him.

> We have worked with Jeff on several projects, both personally and professionally. He is committed to understanding the client's needs and making their goals come to reality. He is worked on projects with us from small remodels to major overhauls with attention to detail and creative solutions to "impossible" problems. He respects the integrity of older homes and is thoughtful about making changes that don't compromise their aesthetic.

> I appreciated the way Jeff incorporated modern design features with our direction to have a traditional home. Give him a try!

> Great Architect and designer! We loved working with Jeff and Habitare. He designed a beautiful and functional family home for us. He considered our wishes and dreams and was able to lend his experience and artistic help to create a beautiful 3 bedroom home in the lovely Rattlesnake Valley. He designed windows so that we can view our gorgeous surroundings every day from each room in the home. We really experience the natural setting in which we live thanks to Jeff's keen eye.

> In wanting to add a garage, our first thought was not to consult a designer but meeting and working with Jeff provided a fun and very satisfying result. Right from the start, Jeff’s enthusiasm gave us a greater appreciation for our Mid-Century home, as he pointed out its many unique features. Existing exposed concrete became a design element for the garage all the while respecting and enhancing the original structure. Thanks to Jeff’s design it’s not an addition, it’s a completion.

> Jeff gave me everything I wanted in my remodel while staying true to the architectural details of my house. He listens well and has great ideas. And he's very easy to work with--professional, articulate, responsive, and really friendly. Everyone who comes to my house is really impressed with the new space.

> Jeff Rolston-Clemmer did an imaginative remodel of a 1970s Spanish-style house for us. He came up with a fine design--the most exciting feature of which was an octagonal sun room. He paid much attention to details--for example, a pillar replacing a weight-bearing wall was octagonal in shape, to match the sun room. Jeff was very easy to work with, and got along very well with the contractor and sub-contractors. We did the whole remodel by e-mailed photos, since we were still living in Pennsylvania at the time, and the house is in Montana; it would have been easy for this to go wrong, but in fact it went very smoothly. Jeff lives in our neighborhood, and often stopped by on informal supervisions on his way home--he really went the extra mile. Now, two years after the remodel, I am working with him again, on revamping the front stairs, and again he is full of good ideas. I recommend him very warmly.

**★★★★★ — Deanna Schafer, March 2013**

> We were sort of reluctant to hire an architect for our simple plan to convert the garage into a dining room, but the expense was soon forgotten. Jeff's ideas transformed our home in ways we hadn't conceived of. He maintained the modest scale and the architectural charm of our 1940 house while somehow creating the most open, gracious living space. We further took advantage of his artistic gift by consulting with him on color and style choices as the remodel progressed. What's more, he is a genuinely nice guy who was a lot of fun to work with. This percentage of our remodel cost was far and away the money best spent.

> when i met jeff in person and then visited several of his finished homes , i knew he would be the designer for me for my next remodel.
> he listens to the needs and hopes of the client and is then wonderful at being able to apply his knowledge and expertise to manifest the imagined space .
> he is a person of great integrity and the homes he remodels or builds are filled with such beautiful and original touches.
> i know that when it comes time to work on my next remodel that jeff will do everything he can to bring all of my ideas together in the most intelligent and beautiful way and create the special home i am looking for .

  - Description: With fantastic views of the local ski area and creek pasture, this remodel highlights the Alpine Modern aesthetic that goes so naturally with its Western Montana setting. The original custom home was cut up by an L-shaped stair to the walk-out basement. The expansive views were also cut up by small, separate windows that distracted from the view. Straightening out the stair and adding the wall of glass not only emphasized the view, but also greatly expanded the sense of space. Adding wood beams…
