> Bob is a creative and thoughtful architect. He brings a delightful passion and a breadth of experience to his residential design work. Bob works hard at conveying his design work clearly. For his clients, he makes fantastic use of 3d modeling software to give them a crisp virtual experience with his designs. For builders, Bob provides detailed plans with multi-colored lines and notes that make the work of reading his plans and building his designs easier. Bob is excellent to work with.

> Rob has been a great resource for us after we bought an off the grid, fixer upper in South Woodstock, VT four years ago.. He has guided us through three projects now, including outside deck and front garden area, kitchen and great room remodel, and the mud room to die for. He is eminently practical and efficient, while at the same time being creative and whimsical when needed. He is a great pleasure to work with and delivers what he promises, on time and on budget. Our project planned for next year: construction of the fern house within listening distance from our stream.

> Bob was great to work with and provided the ideas we needed to make the project work for us. Maintaining the character of a 200 year old house, yet updating certain aspects is a delicate balancing act. We never could have accomplished this without Bob's vision.

> I have worked with Bob over many years evolving into high performance building which Bob has been a leader in driving and implementing. His research and willingness to move in new directions has put him in the forefront of the high performance building movement.

> Bob Swinburne is very easy to work with. He listened very well to what I needed and thoughtfully offered suggestions with full explanations and respect. I trusted him because of this, followed his recommendations, and am still as delighted with his design as I was at first. I would work with him again, anytime.

> Currently working with this architect on a custom home in southern Vermont. Works closely with us, is fastidious, smart, and patient! He blends building science with a creative, stylistic eye. I trust him completely.

  - Description: This house is one of many similar houses on a side street in Brattleboro, Vermont. The kitchen was dark and minimally functional. The living room was a funky later addition on the back of the house. We developed a long term plan and spent time looking at many options with much three dimensional modeling and imagery in order to feel confidant moving forward. In the end, structural modifications were minimal. We added a small entry mudroom and rebuilt the back living room and deck. Greg Goodman di…

  - Description: This house was designed for an older single person to spend the next stage of her life. It was imperative from the start of the project to keep energy consumption to a minimum. Keeping the budget low was another concern, as long as energy efficiency was not sacrificed. Finally, handicap accessibility was crucial in the interior design. A smart low tech solution allowed building a high performance house on a budget. In addition to the 12-inch thick walls that are filled with dense-packed cellulos…

After the initial shock and dismay, and after resolving the insurance question, the owners looked at the situation as an opportunity rather than a catastrophe. The damage and what was needed to fix it provided the impetus to redesign the first floor and provided the opportunity to address energy issues in the first floor walls. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Siding Material** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi There, I'm curious what kind of wood is used for this exterior?

A: Eastern White Cedar

**Q: Is the standing seam metal from Drexel Metals?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I see the standing seam metal is midnight bronze. Does that happen to be from Drexel Metals? It's gorgeous!! This is one of the few inspiration pictures I found that I really like. Thanks! -Kristal

A: Gosh I don’t remember or have a record of manuf. midnight bronze is a complex color in that it can appear different according to light conditions. Sometimes brown, sometimes black, sometimes gray. Also please ignore the exposed rigid insulation. (blue) the was a quick shot during construction .

**Q: Do you do anything to protect the mattress from getting wet in rain?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The overhangs do a pretty good job of protecting plus it's in the woods so winds are not particularly strong. I used to wrap the mattress for the winter with plastic but then there were mouse issues. Currently I use a blow up mattress and just take bedding out when I use it.

**Q: What was the estimated cost to build these stairs? Mine are similar.** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: In never knew the cost (in 2006) as it was wrapped up in the whole house cost and not itemized. I do know that it took two carpenters about a week to build. During construction the treads were 2x12 framing lumber and they swapped them out at the end for the cherry treads you see hear. materials in 2006 were around $2000 and included railings upstairs. Treads were milled locally from a tree on the property.

**Q: нравится крыша.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Что за материал, как ведет себя при морозах, граде?

A: thanks for answering the question. The google translation was not very useful. My wife spent time in Russia and I'll ask her to look at this.

**Q: siding** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love your design! Can u tell me the maker of the medal siding?

A: I'm not sure if they ended up going with this manufacture but here's a link to a Pac-Clad color chart - see midnight bronze. Most standing seam metal companies have a similar color. https://www.pac-clad.com/color-availability-chart/
