## Community Q&A

**Q: Mother-in-law suite with handicap bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are ready to begin the process of adding a mother-in-law suite to the back of our home. We have a fabulous contractor who did some work for us earlier this year, but need advice and ideas about what would make that area comfortable, safe, handicap accessible, and a happy place for Mom to stay. It will be located at the back of our home, just off of our kitchen. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We would like to add a bedroom, closet and bathroom for her that would be accessible from our kitchen, and also have a separate entrance from our patio.

A: There is a lot of thought that should go into a Mother in Law's space or 'fixing to stay' homes.  
It is not just a handicap bathroom but this thought process throughout the whole living space.  As we age, we need more light; it is easier to lift up than take things down from above; no throw rugs; the floor all one level in case of the use of a wheel chair or walker; furniture that is firmer to sit on for ease of getting up; 36" openings/door ways; easy of moving a wheel chair around a kitchenette; toe kicks in the kitchen for a possible wheel chair use; sinks that are easier to get at if one ends up in a wheel chair; showers that can be rolled into without a door; plenty of room to move around in each and every room, not just a bathroom.
Making the place bright with good lighting \[sky lights for privacy if need be\] and nice colors, keeping her tastes in mind as well as yours.  Making sure she has the storage or room for her hobbies as well to keep her busy.
It is very rewarding to help our parents out but we not only need to make their life easier/convenient but ours as well by the peace of mind we can obtain because we put a lot of thought into their comfort and ease of getting around each room.   Safety first.
