### Reviews

**★★★★★ — HU-555807464, Aug. 2021**

> He provided great information regarding our layout for for our new construction and for installing a crawl space door in our foundation. He's very knowledgeable, prompt, and courteous. Highly recommend!

**★★★★★ — James, Sept. 2020**

> I have collaborated with Shuler Architecture on several projects. Mark is a talented architect experienced and equipped to handle complex issues that may be encountered on residential and commercial projects. His familiarity with building codes and site conditions help Owners reach a realistic understanding of a projects scope and cost. Mark’s attention to detail provides the contractor and their subs with the tools necessary to deliver a high-quality project.

**★★★★★ — Brad, July 2020**

> We hired Mark to help us build our dream home in Seattle and he delivered, with exceptional quality and respect. Mark was very attentive to every detail, helped us coordinate with the city and our builder, and was a pleasure to work with. We took a 1600 sq foot (2bd, 1bth) and turned it into a 3800 sq ft (5bd, 5bth) on the same footprint. It was a complete tear-down, new foundation, full basement, 3 stories, with rooftop deck. Mark responded to our initial request in minutes, helped us with gathering ideas, provided extensive drawings, and incorporated our additions throughout the initial planning. Mark was available throughout the build and even after completion to answer questions. It was a pleasure working with him and I’d recommend his services to others.

**★★★★★ — jldseattle, July 2020**

> I connected with Mark in 2004 to design a major remodel on a fixer upper, starting at the foundation. He provided guidance and expertise every step of the way; sharing his knowledge with this curious first time homeowner. Mark made it possible to incorporate the features and aesthetic I hoped for while doubling the footprint and functional space.
>
> In 2018, Mark designed an efficient, well-purposed DADU/Garage on the same property as the '04 project. Mark has a knack for navigating the City code that allowed the project to move along smoothly from start to finish. Mark is an incredible resource and he is always willing to lend a hand or direct you to someone he knows that can best help. It was a treat to work together again, not only with Mark but the same contractor as well.

**★★★★★ — mglacey33, July 2020**

> We have used Shuler Architecture for three or four different projects now, ranging from a simple garden shed design to a new house plan to a full house remodel. Mark is thorough, very up-to-date with current building codes for a variety of cities, and overall has a great ideas. He is timely in his work and follows through on what he says he will do. Overall we highly recommend Shuler Architecture!

**★★★★★ — Eric Liljegren, July 2020**

> Mark Shuler is an expert navigator of the Seattle DCI permitting and project management labrynth, and was an essential partner in establishing use for the record for a small apartment we own in Seattle. He is responsive, professional and a good value - I would never attempt a permitted construction or remodel project in Seattle without him. I recommend Shuler Architecture without reservations!

**★★★★★ — gentrynick, Dec. 2016**

> Mark has done an outstanding job on our project and has successfully navigated through the complexities of renovating a 100+ year old home. Mark is quick to respond and makes himself available when needed. He also has exceptional attention to detail. We are just about to kick off construction on Mark's plans and look forward to seeing the completed project in 2017.

**★★★★★ — angmday, Jan. 2016**

> Mark Shuler was an invaluable contributor to a complex commercial project in Snohomish County. He was responsive to our needs, mindful of the regulatory environment, and dedicated to detail. Our project would not have been possible without his skills and team-based approach.

**★★★★★ — mary4732, Dec. 2015**

> Mark helped us navigate the challenging permit system in Seattle so that we could get our basement apartment legalized and up to date. He was a great advocate, and we could not have completed this project without his expert knowledge of the Seattle DPD system.
> He is also wonderful to work with; very professional, positive, and an excellent communicator.

**Comment from Shuler Architecture:**

> Thanks Mary and congratulations on getting to the finish line.

**★★★★★ — aegann, Dec. 2015**

> We hired Shuler Architecture to design our extensive home remodel after receiving bids from two other architecture firms (one very large residential and one smaller residential firm). We selected Shuler for the following reasons:
> -Shuler did an excellent job in the pre-sale cycle of creating a vision of what our home project could achieve, taking into consideration our style, goals and budget.
> -Shuler did the best job of the three bids we received in then taking this vision and laying out how the project gets completed, including descriptions of the contractors with which Shuler has excellent relationships. This was a major differentiator for us, as the other two bids were very lacking in this need.
> During the design process, Shuler managed our project excellently. We met with Shuler a number of times at the project site, going through about 5 different project iterations until a final design was achieved. Shuler walked us through our expected costs and how they related to the design, which made it easier for us to understand the impacts of asking for more or less on the final project. Lastly, Shuler handled a very difficult permitting process with the City of Kirkland, making sure our project had all of the necessary elements of safety, but none of the unnecessary hassle that has come to be the city's permitting process.
> I would recommend Shuler for any type of comparable remodel, based on excellence in design, project management and exceeding customer expectations.

**★★★★★ — Charles Bofferding, Dec. 2015**

> Mark provided designs for an extensive full first floor remodel.
> He provided insights and inspiration to turn our dated mid century house into a wonderful place for our large family to gather and my wife and I to live the rest of our lives.

**Comment from Shuler Architecture:**

> Thanks Charles. I hope to feature this remodel on this forum soon.

**★★★★★ — Dora Rozet, Dec. 2015**

> We hired Mark to make some changes to our main floor plan. Mark came up with a wonderful and inexpensive concept which was a major improvement to our home. He is very experienced and knowledgeable, patient and easy to work with. He was always on time and never missed a deadline. Hiring him was an excellent choice and I would recommend his services to anybody who is looking to build or remodel.

 - Description: Completed in 2019, this is a home we completed for client who initially engaged us to remodeled their 100 year old classic craftsman bungalow on Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill. During our initial conversation, it became readily apparent that their program was much larger than a remodel could accomplish and the conversation quickly turned toward the design of a new structure that could accommodate a growing family, a live-in Nanny, a variety of entertainment options and an enclosed garage – all squeez…

 - Description: Like many West Coast cities, Seattle is facing a severe housing shortage at a time when labor and material costs have skyrocketed. Combined with a lack of available dirt, housing vacancy rates stubbornly hover under 5%. A response to this housing perfect storm has been the evolution of a new housing prototype called the Detached Auxiliary Dwelling Unit (DADU). Elsewhere, this is commonly referred to as a Mother-in-Law (MIL) unit. As the name implies, this is a small, self-contained housing type…

 - Description: This project is a massive fire restoration. Our clients, after completing a major upgrade of this structure in 2008, were about to enjoy Christmas in their newly remodeled home. At the time, the Puget Sound was buried under 30 inches of snow and our clients were in their driveway sledding with their daughter when a neighbor yelled that their house was on fire. By the time the fire department arrived, the house and contents were engulfed in flames, resulting in a total loss of more than $2.2 mill…

 - Description: One of our latest projects is a new homestead for a 5th generation family farmer in Iowa. Located just outside of Iowa City, the original farm house reached the end of its useful life and we were asked to replace this structure with a new home that evoked and respected the traditional values of a family farm while incorporating modern sensibilities of residential design. Our design response is our favorite space planning concept - a classic great room scheme that provides as much outdoor living…

 - Description: The Owners of this luxurious waterfront estate acquired this property after the previous owners defaulted on their loan and stopped construction. We were initially engaged to inspect and assess the structural integrity of the building shell and work with a geo-technical engineer to evaluate the condition of the site’s soil. Tests determined that the site’s previous use as a sawmill and Native American fishing ground rendered the soil unfit for construction activity. In response to the lack of so…

Advanced green strategies include a closed-loop geothermal heat pump system to heat and cool the house, solar photo-voltaic panels on the roof to provide power and hot water, deep overhangs to reduce heat gain in the summer, window & building envelope upgrades to minimize heat loss in the winter and materials that will be sourced within 500 miles of the project to reduce embedded energy and total carbon…

 - Description: Built at the turn of the 20th century, this grand urban estate was originally a waterfront property before Lake Washington was lowered by 9'. Situated on an just over an acre of land in Seattle's Seward Park neighborhood, this property is actually comprised of 3 structures - a main house, a garage/servants' quarters and a boat shed. By the time we were engaged by the new owners, all three structures had been ravaged by time and deferred maintenance. Our initial tasks included demolishing and reb…

 - Location: Great Falls, VA
 - Photos: 18
 - Description: Sited on a sloping and densely wooded lot along the Potomac River in Northern Virginia, exceptional architecture on large, verdant lots is the norm. The owners' program for this new home required a plan flexible enough to accommodate a growing family, a variety of in-home entertainment options, and recreational pursuits for children and their friends. Stylistically, our clients desired an historic aesthetic reminiscent of an English baronial manor that projects the traditional values and culture…

 - Location: Bainbridge Island, WA
 - Photos: 31
 - Description: Built during the depth of the 2009 Great Recession, this modern classic was designed for a Bainbridge Island developer. Sited on a densely wooded lane, the zoning of this lot forced us to design a compact home that rises 3 stories. In response to this compactness, we drew inspiration from the grand homes of McKim, Mead & White on the Long Island Sound and Newport, Rhode Island. Utilizing our favorite Great Room Scheme, we planned the main level with a 2-storey entry hall, office, formal dining r…

 - Description: Situated on an island 30 minutes from downtown Seattle, this house was designed, appropriately, in the spirit of Martha's Vineyard and includes many classic touches of northeastern seaboard architecture. The home is sited on a densely wooded lot and is stretched across its site to maximize daylight in every space. The open plan flows seamlessly from space to space while the main level Master Suite is tucked away in its own discrete wing. Upstairs, there are 2 large bedrooms, a full bath, office,…

 - Location: Bainbridge Island, WA
 - Photos: 7
 - Description: This small house is a project we executed a number of years ago on a island a short ferry ride from Seattle. Our challenge with this design was to enclose 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, living room, dining room, kitchen, family room and mud area in a mere 2300 sf. We solved this problem by organizing a compact floor plan that minimized circulation space and purposed every square foot of floor area. Remarkably, we also managed to create 4 distinct outdoor porches that address different functions - form…

 - Photos: 12
 - Description: Sited on a densely wooded lot adjacent to a deep ravine, we designed this compact home essentially as a response to the sloping character of the site and rigorous environmental and zoning regulations. Utilizing a variation on our favorite Great Room scheme, we planned the main level with an open patio accessible from a formal entry and a Kitchen/Breakfast area, an office, formal dining room and finally, the Great Room itself. The lower level contains a guest room with bath, family room, wine cel…

 - Description: A new waterfront home on the footprint of an existing structure. The form of the house is a deceptively simple box that creates room for a program that includes 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, Living, Dining, Powder Mud, Laundry and home office while adding visual interest to the elevations. Enveloping this contemporary floor plan is detailed shingle-style vocabulary beneath a strong roof form reminiscent of the Low House by McKim, Meade and White. - [Seattle, Wa Spec House \#1](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/seattle-wa-spec-house-1-pj-vj~204203)
 - Location: Seattle, WA
 - Photos: 21
 - Description: This is another example of the classic second story addition that we do a lot of here in Seattle. A builder client approached us to design the makeover of this house after he acquired it at a foreclosure auction. Our solution repurposes the basement as a large, open entertainment space, guest suite and home office. The main level contains the public functions - Living, Dining, Kitchen and formal Den - while the upper level contains 2 ample children bedrooms and a Master Suite with a large walk-i…

 - Location: Seattle, WA

 - Description: Completed in 2015, this 4 BR, 2 1/2 bath was designed for a developer with a intolerably tight budget. Our simple solution employs a straightforward mix of flowing spaces borrowed from California great room houses with design elements found in more traditional residential design. The house is entered through a generous entry hall flanked by a formal Dining Room on one side and a Home Office/Den on the other. The far end of this Entry Hall deposits into a large Great Room and open kitchen that is…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Does anyone know where it can be purchased from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Beautiful coffee table!!

A: Hello and thanks for getting in touch. I'm sorry but I do not have any info about the furniture in this photo. These are staging photos for a sale and were not my clients'.

**Q: Drawing** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hello! This is a beautiful, budget-friendly solution to a small front porch. I'm looking for a gable + pergola for the front porch of my 1950 bungalow, very much like this one! Can you help with a drawing?

A: Hi Tricia,

Sure, I'm happy to lend a hand. Reach out to me @ 206.359.0169 and we can discuss your project.

Mark Shuler

**Q: What is the paint colour of the trin/moulding?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi and thanks for the question.

I did this project 20 years ago so I cannot be much help about the existing paint colors. I often use Benjamin Moore 'White Dove' as a trim color so I suggest experimenting with that selection.

Good luck!

**Q: love the wicker furniture ,could you please tell me where is it from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hello & thanks for the question. The outdoor set came from Restoration Hardware, Provence Collection:
http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/category/products.jsp?link=ProvenceGrey&categoryId=cat1696028
I completed this project a number of years ago and do not recall the color selection. I'm sure it was one of the standard colors available at the time.

**Q: Is that a glass backsplash behind the grill?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hello and thanks for the question. No, glass here would be vulnerable to cracking due to the heat from the grille (see before photos in this portfolio for an indication of what can happen in these installations). I believe we used a honed slate with metal accent drops in this installation.

**Q: Question.** *(in Photo Questions)*

What about the stone the goes up the fireplace? Brand or manufacture?

A: Hi and thanks for the question, This stone is an adhered veneer probably from the manufacturer 'El Dorado Stone'. El Dorado offers a wdie variety of product that I think looks much better than the competition. Check them out here:

http://www.eldoradostone.com/
Good luck with you project.
