We also had a particularly challenging low spot in the back where water pooled after rain that did not allow for traditional French drains. Loads of surface tree roots and spotty grass too. Drew's plan for that area literally solved all our problems - even water that had pooled on our patio until now! He designed beds that used plants ideally suited to our difficult conditions and really educated us on the various plants. We were able to select from a good variety of plants, colors and bloom times so our yard will end up with a lot of visual interest and minimal effort to maintain it going forward. The work was done in just two days and has transformed our yard significantly. We can't wait to see how it looks next summer. He then e-mailed me a list of appropriate native plants to choose from. > On the day of installation, Drew and his crew of three diligent workers arrived and completed the project in the one day as planned. I chose an oval shape for the approximately 120 square foot garden. Under Drew's guidance, the crew worked steadily and meticulously the entire day. Additionally, as Drew mentored the crew, I watched and learned about the details of the project. The crew used the sod from the garden site to construct the surrounding berm which blended well with the surrounding lawn. A trench was dug which contained the flexible tubing which led from the downspouts to the rain garden. Grass seed and sod covered the trench, which was level with the lawn. Drew and the crew installed the native plants and added mulch. The clean up was complete. What type of soil condition do the like? Is it ok to place them in the wet area? A: Cardinal Flower is a wetland plant and requires moist soils. Nodding Onion is an upland plant, but can handle moist soils as well. **Q: Love your yard...** *(in Photo Questions)* ...exactly what I'd like to do in my Pinckney back yard. Looks like there's NO MOWING NECESSARY and that cuts down on the daily noise during those long summer days. Is it wild or did you plant something in particular? A: It is definitely a planned planting - a mix of seed and plants, but it can be done exclusively either way. We've done several of these types of plantings. Let me know if you'd like to know more and if we can be of service. - Drew **Q: Isn't this a little dangerous to be doing this in a suburb?** *(in Photo Questions)* I have a 1,500' native garden in Nebraska and would love to burn, but worried. A: Hi Benjamin. Thank you for your question. Burning is always something that should be done with caution. However, with the proper weather conditions, safety equipment, knowledge,and a good burn plan it can be done safely. For example, on this day there were light winds, temp 40, and humidity about 40%. I did a back burn so the fire moved very slowly. Smoke, which is the greater concern in close quarters went straight up. I burn right up to the property lines and within a foot or so of the house. Never had an issue, never used the nearby hose. If you are concerned get a good burn contractor for the first time. There is a small book called something like "How to Manage Small Prairie Fires".
