Stainless? Paint?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am updating my kitchen and buying all new appliances and thinking of having cabinets painted. Not sure if I should go with stainless appliances or the new black stainless. What color would you paint the cabinets? I was thinking of off white with a darker color in the island. Been planning for months and afraid to take the first step. A: The floors in VA had darkened and yellow Esso I had them sanded down and had acrylic coats added. This will not yellow and the floors are natural and show the woods perfections and flaws. Gorgeous. **Q: What colour for the walls?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Just purchased some of this fabric for a roman blind in my 16 month olds bedroom. What colour would you suggest for the walls? The carpet is almost charcoal in colour. A: I'd go with a soft yellow. Sherwin Williams has a wheat color that would compliment this paper very well. **Q: Should the front porch roofline be the same as the roofline?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Please Help! Our house is being built with a shed roof over the front porch instead of a gable. Yes, I did agree to this because our builder, who is a great guy, said it will look really good. I'm a visual person and can't find any pictures of any houses with a shed roof like this one, so even though I'm told it will look good, I'm having a hard time accepting it. My vision was to have a gabled roof over the front porch with the V shaped timbers for that lodgy look on this soon to be craftsman style home. Please tell me if this is okay or this is bad. I don't know what to do, do I ask to remove it and put up a gabled roof, leave it as is, or maybe you have some other ideas to share. What do you think? Please help.... Thanks, Wendy A: It may be an expense but I'd raise the roof. It looks like a lot of effort was spent on the house and the porch was a last minute just get it done kind of thing. The entrance must connect the feeling of the house. The front door completes the home. It's like great eyeliner and no eyebrows. Well, maybe not... **Q: Need help deciding. Keep floor 'natural' or 'stained'?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I just bought a new home and want to refinish the hardwood floors throughout, including the stairs and banister. Currently they are 'natural'. The 'floor guy' suggest I stain them. He said the tone of the wood will be more even if they are stained. He's suggesting the color 'Early American'. I'm clueless. The only thing I do know is I don't want to go very dark because I've read it shows a lot of dust. My home is a colonial built in 2000. I like contemporary style. I like the natural but if a stain looks better, I can switch. What do you all think? A: Golden oak would work well with both the style of the house and your contemporary furnishings. Rooms in early American homes are often smaller and not open. For this reason I would go lighter. Even tone floor will give the rooms a brighter look. Contemporary furnishings have cleaner lines. Golden oak works with both. Good luck. **Q: Stuck on how to finish office** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm stuck on how to finish off our home office. I would love a cozier feel. The room is actually supposed to be a formal living room in our floor plan but we just don't live that way. I would love a room that is a cozy but functional office / reading room / den. The room is off our front hall and the room to the back is our playroom (which will in years become the office). Thinking of doing the follow - \- add a ottoman or coffee table \- rearrange and/or add to wall art \- table between chairs \- replace fake wood blinds with woven roman shades Looking for any suggestions. Though desk, console and chairs should stay (for now). I could maybe see changing the chairs if I found something I love. Help please! A: Just toss a small pillow on each chair that will change up the look. They look comfy. **Q: Need help with living room/kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* I moved into this place a couple of months ago. I'm not allowed to paint the walls and need approval before hanging anything on the walls. I plan on putting a 28 by 40 painting above the TV. Besides that I need any and all advice on how to make this space better. A: I would soften the lighting. The corner lamp is casting shadows.
