## Community Q&A

**Q: How would you update this kitchen? (quick fix needed!)** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We just purchased a home and are planning a large kitchen/dining/living room reno in a few years.  For the time being, I want to put some lipstick on this kitchen to "update" the look.  Counters are black granite.  What color would you paint these flat cabinets? What color back splash would you add? Any other nifty tips?

A: Nichole,

We would suggest painting the cabinets white as a quick fix until you're ready for the big remodel. Also, a glass tile backsplash would accentuate the kitchen nicely.

**Q: Fireplace question** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have two fireplaces with this stone. It is also on the exterior of the home. Has anyone ever worked with it and any suggestions for the fireplaces?

Fireplaces can either be an eyesore or a nice touch to the house. If you have two fireplaces with the same stone it might be time to change one of them up.

**Q: Help me decide how to design the remaining piece of my kitchen puzzle!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Planning for my new kitchen is keeping me up at night! I thought this was going to be fun! My last challenge with my design is to decide if I should make the cabinets on either side of my 36 inch wood range hood symmetrical or not.
Option 1:
A 27" cabinet to the right of the hood and a 30" cabinet to the left of the hood followed by an easy reach corner middle hinged cabinet with 12" doors.
Option 2:
Make both cabinets to the left and right of the hood 27". My KD mentioned a blind cabinet for the corner for the remaining 15 inches. 
Not sure if that is the best solution. The KD has advised that 15" middle hinged doors are too cumbersome. I have seen pics of an easy reach corner cabinet with hinges on each side where one door opens and then the other. My cabinets are custom. Is it a workable solution with this type of cabinet to have 15 inch doors? Or should I just live with it being asymmetrical?

A: Hi phyl760,

While we like to keep things symmetrical when possible, I would recommend doing the 30" 27" and the 15" cabinet for the corner. It sounds like you're deciding between look and functionality. Having that extra corner space might come in handy before you know it.

**Q: Frugal Facade Facelift** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Affordable suggestions for this facade?  (removing the doors to the right of the home). Installing a large window under the gable.  Other ideas to make this look fresh and inviting?  This is a reno that will sell for around $125k in the Indianapolis market.

A: Hi traceynix!

I recommend removing the doors on the right side of the house and replacing them with large windows. Give the exterior a new color paint and that will help a lot with curb appeal.

**Q: Window grids or no grids?** *(in Polls)*

We are replacing the windows on our home and I'm debating on not having any grids at all or just on the top small window and on top of the big window. Also with how windows open is it better to have the windows open from top to bottom, bottom to top or side to side?

A: Hello labad29,

We personally have moved away from windows with grids in San Antonio, TX. It is not that they look bad, in any way, but we prefer to leave those in the past.

**Q: Deck Color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Because of the condition of our deck boards we’ve decided to
use SuperDeck Deck & Dock Coating.  I
just can’t decide on a color.  I know I
don’t want the same color as what I had (to cedar/redish for me).  I only know I want something darker and browner.  Perhaps something that would look good with
my new garage door?  I left Sherwin
Williams with one color (traditional mahogany).
I put a sample on and it’s growing on me but at first I wasn’t a hug fan…is
it too dark?  I could brighten the front with some flowers. It doesn’t help that I can get this paint in any of the
Sherwin-Williams Colors...it's overwhelming!    
Just wondering what all of you thought.  My front door is not as dark as my garage
door.  This deck extends the front of my
house and then wraps around to the side of the house.

I would recommend that you stain your deck the same color as your garage door. The color of the garage door is appealing, and those with a keen eye will notice the matching colors.
