**★★★★★ — Sarah Bryan, Dec. 2025**

> We hired Bob to help us visualize a challenging mountainside addition including a new entryway and pop-top office and guestroom. He was phenomenal from start to finish. He was very accommodating with our busy schedules, asked great questions, and listened to each of my husband and my goals for the project. He brought our vision to life with detailed drawings and allowed us to iterate a few times to get it just right. My favorite part was how he incorporated lots of plants and books in the design, which was beyond the initial scope, but was the cherry on top to turn a very nice design into downright lovable! And, we got exactly what we needed within the exact budget initially discussed. I highly recommend Robert Larsen!

**Comment from Robert R. Larsen, Architect:**

> Thank you Sarah for your kind words. It is great to know you were so happy with my preliminary design. I'm looking forward to working with you on the final plans when you are ready.

**★★★★★ — DT, Oct. 2025**

> Bob is a trusted resource in design. We have engaged him two several times for work on our current residence and have always been pleased with the outcome. He is thoughtful in considering your interests and aligning to your goals for the build. His work has never been ordinary in that he brings fresh ideas and expertise to the project. We would highly recommend Bob.

**★★★★★ — Hoss, June 2025**

> Bob's expertise and experience was extremely valuable in our process of designing our new home with him. He was insightful and had a ton of insight to offer in areas we weren't sure what we wanted in the design. He was thorough throughout the design process and communicated very well with us during the process. His final design and documents were exactly what we needed and detail oriented.

**★★★★★ — Chad and Melissa Kruse, Nov. 2021**

> Best most helpful architect we have ever worked with! He is very detail oriented and always willing to go the extra mile to get things done.
> Thank you Bob so much.

**★★★★★ — Harrison Custom Homes, Inc., June 2021**

> Robert is one of the best architects that I have worked with in my career. We build high end custom homes in Cherry Hills Village and he has been a very important team member to many of our projects. His depth of knowledge, with over 50 years of experience, is very helpful in evaluating building products and systems.
>
> He brings taste, decisiveness and flexibility to his design. His problem solving abilities are unmatched. Robert has been consistently helped organize project design with some of the most complicated projects. Most importantly, Robert is easy to work with and cooperative. I would highly recommend Robert.

**★★★★★ — Sam Spiegel, Dec. 2020**

> Bob is a true professional, who is fair and thoughtful in his work. He prepared a design and drawings for an addition to our home. He was responsive to our requests, made sure he was capturing what we were seeking, and made recommendations with enough details for us to understand the pros and cons of the varying choices we had available to us. He provided everything in a timely manner. I woudl galdly use his services again and highly recommend his services.

**Comment from Robert R. Larsen, Architect:**

> Thank you Sam. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

**★★★★★ — renee balciar, Dec. 2020**

> We had a short deadline for an addition to our house and Robert not only finished his drawings quickly but also to absolute perfection. He ensured that every detail was mapped out and that it followed my vision exactly. The project unfortunately never reached completion due to an issue between me and my contractor but Robert was more than understanding about the situation and made sure that I had everything that I needed from him to complete the project in the future. I cannot recommend a more honest, hardworking, and stand up guy than Robert.

**Comment from Robert R. Larsen, Architect:**

> Thank you Renee. You know I'm always here to be of any help I can in the future.

**★★★★★ — Shirley Whitcomb, Dec. 2019**

> Bob responded to our request for a front porch addition. There were several limitations to work around. Bob listened to our wants as clients and with his knowledge and expertise created a beautiful front porch entry that pleased us and met all codes. He is very professional, kind and yes, affordable! I would use him again for any future projects and highly recommend him to any family or friends. That says a lot!

**★★★★★ — Jeremy Thiesen, Jan. 2019**

> Robert worked with us to make sure we got what we needed at a fair price. Worked promptly and was quick to respond when there were questions from the city about the blueprints we commissioned.

**★★★★★ — Ellen Lee, Oct. 2018**

> I was new to town and found Robert via Houzz. He was just what I needed! Helped me expand a few windows (and connected me to a vendor to replace all windows in the house), add a door to a room (which required structural improvements) and provided some basic design advice. Robert also connected me to a contractor to help do the job (along with other items). I'll definitely be back next year for more assistance. Thank you!!

**★★★★★ — HU-167845, May 2017**

> Robert provided his services in a very professional and timely matter. We are very pleased with the plans and pricing we received.

**★★★★★ — Melissa Schneider, March 2017**

> Bob worked with us to create a beautiful new front of our home; definitely what we could not think of ourselves. Bob is an outside-of-the-box thinker and knows his building codes well. He was able work within the confines of the limitations of our already existing new home and the local building codes to give us plans for a covered front porch and new window placements that will bring a ton of curb appeal to our house and a great deal of new outdoor space for us to enjoy. It was easy to work with Bob, as he is prompt, flexible, open to new ideas, and highly professional. We highly recommend his work.

**★★★★★ — mwalker41950, March 2017**

> Bob came to our home to advise us on a deck expansion that needed architectural information to submit for HOA approval.
> He provided a quick response, very professionally done at a very reasonable cost.
> We will not hesitate to use his services as needed as the project moves forward, and to recommend him enthusiastically to others.
> Excellent in every way.

**★★★★★ — Erica Hurtado, March 2017**

> Robert was great to work with. He was able to show us a couple of different options for our project as well as provide us with contractor recommendations. Robert provided us with detailed technical drawings of our project and did so in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Robert.

**★★★★★ — Steven Villyard, Oct. 2016**

> I hired Robert to design an addition to my house for my mother-in-law, in addition we added a garage, walk out basement and upper floor. Robert showed himself to be extremely knowledgeable and very professional to work with. I also found Robert to be incredibly easy to work with and willing to work out every concern we had. I had a number of changes even after what we called a final plan and Robert made the updates and had them back to me in no time. Robert had a lot of helpful input as we went through the planning portion of the drawings making things much easier to make a final decision. When I went to the county for my permit they had no comment on anything needing to change and told me that the drawings looked very well put together.
> If I find myself in need of another architect in the, Robert will be the first one I call.

**★★★★★ — dougmac246, Feb. 2016**

> Bob is a consummate professional.
>
> We hired him during the sales process of our home in Cherry Creek. We were planning a remodel of the 2nd floor and Basement involving a complete bathroom and master suite with his and hers closets and a sitting room. We were also changing a shared Jack & Jill Bathroom into two en-suites as well as an extensive upgrade to the HVAC system that required extensive alterations to vaulted ceilings and soffits to accommodate new ducting.
>
> Without Bobs insight and ideas, we would not have achieved what we did. His drawings are outstanding, our Builders were so impressed with his attention to detail, I am sure it saved us thousands.
>
> I would hire Bob again in a heartbeat and recommend him to anyone.

**★★★★★ — Dingli Graham, April 2015**

> We have a 1891 house with two new addition on either side of the old house. The exterior was showing decay and needed a face lift. We were having some issues conveying our wishes to our general contractor, so he brought Bob in to consult. As soon as we meet Bob, it was clear he can put our vision onto paper for the contractors to follow. More importantly, he was instrumental in guiding us as we tried to balance preserving the historical integrity of the house and our personal tastes. Bob was also very respectful of our budget, which we greatly appreciated.
>
> Thanks Bob!

**Comment from Robert R. Larsen, Architect:**

> Dingli I really appreciate your willingness to post your review here. Some of my other clients have been reluctant to sign up on Houzz which is required in order to post a review. Fortunately there are many client reviews posted on my website at www.rrlaia.com under "Information / Testimonials" should anyone be interested.

**★★★★★ — Dragonfly, April 2015**

> Bob Larson in my opinion is an exceptional architect with a wide variety of skills. Some of which are organization, creativity, and construction knowledge.........all that are backed by experience. I think Bob enjoys learning and working with new materials and technology.
> I highly recommend Bob on your project!

**★★★★★ — libartjeff, March 2015**

> We look forward to the opportunity to continue to work with him in the future.

**★★★★★ — bfowles4477, March 2015**

> This is the 3rd time I have used Robert Larsen and am more than just happy with the results. The first two were full home renovations and the one in process now is a Sunroom off the Family Room. He is thorough, attentive and very creative. He is familiar with the most recent materials and methods for construction and I know my construction costs were reduced due to his designs. I will use Robert Larsen for all future projects and would recommend his services without hesitation.

**★★★★★ — KLK Home Improvement, Llc, March 2015**

> To all viewers:
>
> I am a General Contractor with 20 years experience in residential construction/remodeling in the South Denver/Castle Rock area. I have
> worked with several Architects over the past several years and since working with Mr. Bob Larsen on my last two projects ( one of which we

> highly recommend him as an Architect. Not only is his drawings complete, easy to read and accurate but also an asset to any successful
> contractor or any home owner. I could not have finished an award winning project without him. He delivered on all the onwers wishes and was available at a phones notice. His pricing was very comparable to other Architects in the area but for what he did for me as a contractor is
> priceless, thanks Bob.

**Comment from Robert R. Larsen, Architect:**

> This reviewer was the general contractor on two high-end residential remodeling and addition projects in the Parker area which I designed, one of which won a design award. He has since hired me to prepare drawings for a few of his own residential customers.

**★★★★★ — denniswl, March 2015**

> Working with Robert Larsen over the last 30 plus years has been a wonderful professional collaboration of incredible skills. Robert has designed projects for clients from traditional French Manor House to Italian Baroque and Neo Classic Revival. His ability to design architectural exterior and interior details is exemplary. I was always amazed at his accuracy in mill work detailing, bidding and the follow through at installation periods. We worked together successfully on 50 or more projects through the years and his portfolio shows the incredible results of the enormous talents. .Robert is easy to work with, affordable and a detailed listener. ## Frequently Asked Questions

**Do you handle permitting, zoning, and regulatory approvals?**
Yes, we handle the preparation of permit-ready plans and specifications as part of our comprehensive design process. While we don't directly obtain permits, our detailed construction documents are designed to meet all necessary requirements for regulatory approvals, streamlining the process for you.

**What types of projects do you specialize in (custom homes, remodels, additions)?**
I specialize in a wide range of residential projects, including custom homes, high-end residential design, renovations, and additions. My expertise also extends to interior architecture, energy-efficient buildings, historic preservation, and even smaller, specialized projects like custom bars, fireplaces, and built-in cabinetry.

**How do you help clients design within their construction budget?**
I help clients design within their budget by recommending a preliminary cost estimate from a general contractor during the schematic design phase. If the estimate exceeds your budget, we can easily adjust the project's scope at that early stage, which ultimately helps save on overall design fees and construction costs.

**Do you provide full-service architectural services through construction?**
Absolutely. We provide full-service architectural services from initial concept development through construction. This includes construction administration, where I act as your representative, review invoices, monitor construction quality, check shop drawings, and address any questions that arise on-site.

**Do you design fully custom homes?**
Yes, I specialize exclusively in designing fully custom homes. I do not offer pre-designed house plans. My approach is to create unique, extraordinary homes, additions, and renovations that are specifically tailored to each client's individual vision, lifestyle, and the unique characteristics of their site.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Painting a small master bedroom** *(in Paint)*

My master bedroom is 12 ft x 11.5 ft so pretty small and square. It has white crown moldings. I'd like to consider painting it a dark colour but thought it might make the room seem smaller and closed in, however I have since heard decorating advice saying painting a room dark doesn't make it seem smaller but actually larger. I want the paint to be in the blue colour zone. I'm also considering painting the walls lighter than ceiling but don't know if this will make the room seem like the ceiling is even lower than it's 8 ft hight. So the advice I need is Dark walls/light ceiling, light walls/dark ceiling, keep or get rid of crown moldings, walls & ceiling same colour as dark or light? I need help.

A: Dark walls will make the room seem smaller. Dark ceiling will make the ceiling look lower. Lighter colors will always make a space seem larger. Blues and other cool colors make a space seem larger while warm colors ( reds, browns, oranges ) make a space seem smaller. The walls can be lighter than the ceiling but the ceiling should not be substantially darker - for instance a light blue ceiling with off-white walls should work fine.

**Q: Concrete Ceiling Beams - How to deal?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

So we're in the midst of a complete apartment gutting and we realised that half of the living room/kitchen has concrete beams. We have decided to leave them as is and if upon completion we change our mind, we'll just plaster over them. Any ideas on what to do with them or how best to treat them? Perhaps they could be painted? The style I ultimately want is industrial/Scandinavian.

A: With industrial / Scandinavian look the painted beams would be appropriate. If the ceilings between the beams turn out to be concrete, you could drop drywall ceilings between the beams in those areas to conceal wiring for light fixtures. Surface fixtures would require dropping the ceiling just a few inches. Recessed LED fixtures might require 4" - 6" dropped ceilings between the beams. You'd then would need to figure out a way to get wiring to those locations - which would probably mean drilling horizontally through a beam or two somewhere if a structural engineer OK'd it. I like the exposed concrete beams in any case as they will give visual interest to the space, and also give a loftier feel. It would be unfortunate to conceal them with a suspended ceiling.

**Q: Suggestions for front landscape?** *(in Landscape Design)*

Hi all,
This is our house. We ripped out all the overgrown evergreens that were covering the windows. Let in the light!!! :) Stumps and rhododendrons will be removed shortly....

Here are my awesome MS paint skills, with my initial thoughts on what to put in front. Hydrangeas near the steps, roses in the middle, and cypress on the ends. Salvia on the right end, and yuki cherry blossoms for some ground cover. Please (kindly and gently, I AM NOT A PRO) critique my plan, thank you. :)

The bed on the left side gets partial sun, the bed on the right is full sun. We have problems with deer consuming everything (!!!) so plants need to be deer resistant. We are in zone 7b? I think. Eastern Massachusetts, but not on the cape.

I am planning to replace those undersized builder grade light fixtures...

Also, in our longer term plan (next two years or so), we need to address the brick steps (railings are loose) and a new front door, but need to save up some budget for that, so if you have suggestions for the future, I am happy to hear them. :)

Thanks.

A: I salute you for wanting to enlarge the light fixtures. Also - since your house is so symmetrical I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to make the planting symmetrical.

**Q: Oversized Wall Clock Placement???** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have a 1966 Colonial and the living room is long, but not that wide. I’m attaching photos of my design dilemma. I just purchased a clock and thought behind the sofa would look nice but I just hit me that the wall that the sofa is on, is not the same length as the wall the fireplace is on. My husband centered the TV over the fireplace, but then centered the sofa with the wall. That left the sofa not centered with the fireplace. Needless to say, that threw the room off. Then I moved the sofa and centered it with the fireplace, which then left extra space on the right and the clock not centered with the wall. I’m so confused. Maybe I don’t use the clock in this room. Thought about doing different mirrors all along the wall that the sofa is on. Thoughts?? I’m stuck!

A: If it wouldn't look to large, I'd put the clock on the exterior wall between the two windows at the end of the room, and keep the sofa centered on the fireplace. Otherwise find another room for the clock. Artwork on the wall behind the sofa.

**Q: Master bath shower** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Our designer mentioned that we need a bigger shower, especially for resale. We now have a 47 x 46 inch shower with a ceiling height of 10 foot with a 2 foot bulkhead. The designer is recommending a complete remodel which would allow for a 36" x 72" shower (with bench) and removing the bulkhead.
Questions. 1. Would the 36" width seem strange with 72" length? 2. Being that the ceiling height of the shower would now be 10' (removal of bulkhead) and the shower quite long, would this make for a cold shower experience?

A: I agree with Denita to keep the wider width. One way to minimize the possible draftiness would be to continue the glass shower enclosure up to the ceiling, in which case I'd properly tile the walls all the way up and be sure the tiled walls and ceiling have moisture resistant drywall so you wouldn't create problem with deteriorating drywall. The length of the shower should not affect draftiness. I'd go as large in either direction as you can comfortably within the available space.

**Q: help with exterior** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Help! I’m starting with a clean slate as far as colors go but I’m having a difficult time with choosing a color combination. I’m incorporating some stone in there and I’m leaning toward Eldorado’s Charleston?? Roof? I like weathered gray I believe it’s called from Certainteed?? My architect drew the plans and I tweaked it to get an idea— uhhh no... I’m no artist!! Thank you.

A: Either greys or taupe with white trim could be very nice. I would recommend painting the front door a vibrant accent color like red or teal to give some contrast and punch. The garage door could also be the accent color. I don't mind the darker shingles although keep in mind they will absorb heat from the sun - but I like the contrast with the medium grey or taupe on the siding.
