> Dave Bier is the person you hire when you want to transform your outdoor space into a magical paradise. He is affordable, reliable, responsive to emails/text and a really fun person to work with. It was a seamless process from beginning to end. His knowledge base is vast and he works well with other trades. Super creative and has great relationships with his subs which was evident in the quality of the work and end product.

> Dave Bier and Futurity were wonderful in helping us create the backyard of our dreams — from the beginning planning to the carpentry and stonework to the landscaping. Dave was absolutely wonderful to work with throughout the process. We couldn’t be happier!

> David Bier came highly recommended to me when I was restoring a Walter Frazier home facing the water in Lake Forest. It was an ecologically complex project involving acres of old growth landscaping and a secure high bluff that led down to a long private beach. His vast knowledge, professionalism and intricate eye to detail amazed me. Not only does he use "best practices" in everything he sets his hand to, but he approaches every question from the most naturalistic point of view. He carefully considerers the available possibilities and always selects the one that would best suit the particular situation. HIs advice was never wrong in my experience. He is creative in his approach and a delight to work with personally. Once back in the office, he works tirelessly to make the most intricately detailed data sets and designs you could ever imagine. His ability to clearly explain all the designs and data is another wonderful facet he brings to a project. Another important, and often overlooked, characteristic of Dave is his meticulousness when it comes to invoicing. My account swears she has never met his equal in clarity and conciseness- a real bonus that is rare to find in any industry. I will admit also that I am glad to continue to call Dave a friend long after our project ended. I wish I could lure him out to the West Coast... so does my accountant! Everyone involved with the project loved Dave and still ask me about him to this day- he's that kind of guy...

> As a fellow landscape architect, I have known and worked with David for decades on a variety of jobs ranging from private residence design to assessing and documenting a 90 square-mile watershed for potential open space preservation opportunities. David has always exhibited the highest professional standards in his approach to and execution of projects. His methodical and thorough analysis of each job is impressive, and his design ideas are both practical and elegant. He is also excellent with people ranging from the client (of course!) to the many other trades that must mesh into his work as it is executed --- and his low-key, thoughtful manner wins the respect of these persons every time.

> I cannot think of a better or more able landscape architect, and recommend him without hesitation.

> David Bier of Futurity has performed work on a number of houses in our conservation community, Deerpath Farm. www.deerpathfarm.com. His clients are thrilled with his work! He is creative, sensitive to land preservation and current environmental concerns, and very easy to work with. I couldn’t recommend him more highly, and will continue to heartily promote his highly valued services in our community.

> I had the pleasure of working with Dave Bier/ Futurity on two residential projects where I was project architect. Dave is incredibly talented - both from the design side as well as the technical side. He is an individual who has a passion for his work and his calm demeanor made all the meetings enjoyable. I recommend Futurity to all my clients!

> Mr. David Bier, Futurity Inc, is the most incredibly talented landscape designer! Mr. Bier’s level of intensity and integrity that he pours into his work leaves no stone, literally, unturned. We recently had the good fortune to custom build our dream home bringing Dave on-board from the very beginning as we first ventured into our initial structural design. From the very moment that Dave joined our project, his interactive participation connected spot-on with every imaginable detail. It remained evident that Dave listened carefully to our vision. Mindful of the conservation community we chose for our homesite, he respectfully chose the varied species and plant material indigenous to the development. His uncanny eye for detail, color, beauty and harmony truly left us with the perfect landscape environment. Additionally, Dave aided us in choosing various natural stone for our walkway, pathway, lanai, terrace and driveway; another testament to his creative talent. He unselfishly shares his knowledge, resources and availability to ensure his client is completely satisfied. Dave’s reserved yet confident persona transcends to his clients also a level of confidence that the finished product he delivers will be nothing short of a masterpiece landscape design. Dave Bier is a true pleasure to work with and highly regarded and recommended by us as well as other professionals in related industries.

**★★★★★ — Creating independent Leaners, June 2017**

> David Bier of Futurity was and is exceptional. I have worked with him on three projects; the last began late April of this year and currently ongoing.
>
> Our first project was our side yard: the design of a rose garden and crushed bluestone pathway with ivy covered 8' trellises on both sides of the path; both areas are stunning!
>
> The second project was the design and supervision of basalt paver installation for our exterior building entry area.
>
> Lastly, and currently, David designed a pergola and architectural columns as a focal point at end end of the crushed bluestone pathway.
>
> I can not stress enough how talented, knowledgeable, adaptable, professional, and respectful David is.
>
> I expect a landscape architect to be talented and knowledgeable. Yet, expertise does not necessarily imply adaptability nor respect.
>
> Often, professionals have their vision of your project. The project then becomes "theirs not yours-" not with David!
>
> No one will ever design another inch of soul on our property! I cannot more highly recommend David Bier; you will not be disappointed.

**★★★★★ — Dianne Stanley, Dec. 2016**

> David Bier is professional, knowledgeable, creative, and flexible. He brought a vision to our landscape design, and oversaw its execution with expertise. He has a calm demeanor and was not thrown by our budgeting needs, occasional requests for modifications, or unexpected crew/construction complications. We get compliments on the landscape from everyone who visits -- even delivery men and random passersby. Highly recommend.

> See before and after photos of back yard.

> Phase two of our landscape project was completed this past summer.... and we are beyond thrilled. We now have a beautiful, functional, and long lasting brick walk and fire pit. Note that it seamlessly adjoins the patio installed by Futurity a year earlier. The new path frames our yard in ways I couldn't have imagined... and makes a striking impact throughout the entire area. The natural rock fire pit is a unique and well used addition.
>
> David and his team are top notch. They have great vision & wonderful ideas. I found Futurity was very open to trying new approaches, yet happy to scale back when needed.

**★★★★★ — massock, Jan. 2016**

> David Bier exceeded our expectations in creating a naturalistic landscape plan for our home in the Chicago north shore area. Part of our property is under conservancy, so it is essential to work with someone who has extensive knowledge of native plant materials. David combines that knowledge with strong design skills and practical solutions to challenges. He also provided hands-on supervision as installation proceeded to ensure that execution of the plan was proper and pleasing. Add to that, he is quite pleasant to work with. We will be using his services again in spring of 2016.

**★★★★★ — maryannehn, Oct. 2015**

> David Bier at Furturity, Inc. delighted us, designing an amazing new patio in record time. Our project only slowed down when we needed breathing space to make our decisions. His path, pergola and patio design will create a beautiful outdoor living space for both children's play and adult entertaining.
> Throughout planning and stage one of implementing our project, David listened carefully to our needs. He worked closely with us in choosing paving materials that perfectly complimented the style of our home.
> Futurity seamlessly worked side-by-side with the contractors to turn David's designs into reality. Their vendors were amiable, professional and had a great eye for detail, guiding us every step of the way.
> David was on-site frequently, surveying the building progress and making final adjustments on the spot. His focused attention made all the difference.
> We are thrilled with phase one of our new outdoor space, and very pleased with the professionals that made it happen. We can't wait to complete David's design.

  - Location: Princeton, NJ
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: A new home was constructed on the grounds of a historic estate. A plan was developed to connect a remnant garden patio and terrace to the new home. The plan called for the restoration and expansion of the existing patio along with a new wall and terrace. The new wall further encloses the space in a manner consistent with the previous residence. The new terrace provides a graceful transition from the home to the garden
- [Privacy and elegance (Shaker Heights, OH)](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/privacy-and-elegance-shaker-heights-oh-pj-vj~1019643)
  - Location: Shaker Heights, OH
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: Located on a highly visible corner lot, this residence had a small back yard surrounded by tall evergreen hedges. The challenge was to maintain privacy in the yard while opening view points in and out. The design capitalized on a change in grade; a curved entry walk leading from the sidewalk to the garden was designed to connect with a series of patios. Each patio offers different views of the main garden and front landscape while remaining hidden from view. A trickling water feature and pond ad…

  - Location: Chicago, IL

  - Description: Futurity created an oasis within the city to provide privacy and safe play areas for a small family. Arbors were designed and oriented to form a series of rooms. A patio, constructed with recycled street curbing and bricks, flows under the arbors and creates an intimate seating area. The focal point of the garden is a multi-level water feature; a fountain (created from an architectural artifact) leads to a runnel and a pond below. This project received the 2006 City of Chicago Mayor Richard M. D…

  - Location: Princeton, NJ
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: Futurity used innovative land grading and walkway placements to establish new and elegant connections between remnant elements of historic gardens. Plantings were refined to enclose spaces, open vistas and reinforce formal axes. Futurity also designed and implemented cost-effective solutions to water drainage issues through the strategic placement of underdrains, swales and plantings. Pipes and swales now route water away from sensitive plantings and drain previously saturated soils. Water-toler…

  - Description: This courtyard demonstrates that vehicle parking areas can be beautiful and highly functional. Pervious clay pavers of several colors create interest and integrate the paving with the adjacent historic architecture. Different patterns are used to define an entry walk (a formal entry point) from the parking area. This courtyard is also a storm water management system capable of storing several thousand gallons of storm water runoff in the aggregate base below the pavers. Runoff from building roof…

  - Location: Chicago, IL
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: The backyard of this Cotswold style cottage was an old flagstone patio and a concrete pad. The space had to be re-imagined to address the client’s desire to have a patio space that was strongly connected to the adjacent side yard. To accomplish this Futurity created a main patio, a fire pit area, a central garden walk and an entry terrace. The main patio of natural stone pavers is turned on an angle to connect with the adjacent side yard. The fire pit is a grouping of carefully arranged weathere…
