## Community Q&A

**Q: Kitchen updates** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello, I am planning to update my kitchen and was thinking about breaking a wall between kitchen and living room and making a big island with granite counter top. Any ideas about how to get it done right and what design should I choose?

**Q: wood like tile installation** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I had wood like tile installed and the project was wrapped up a few days ago.

Unfortunately, the installation did not go hitch free from the beginning. The tile I installed is a large format tile (9" x 36 "). The tile had a bow in the middle. The owner of the company and the maker's representative came by and assured us that is not a problem but usual for all tiles of this size. They brought along a leveling system and suggested that will take care of the issue. Even though the levelling system was designed for 1/16" grout lines but our grout lines are mostly between 1/16" and 1/8" and in some places they are 1/8".

These guys didn't use painters tape to tape off the walls. I suggested it to them and they said the grout will come off. And then when it didn't come off they said its too dark and the grout sits in the wall texture.

The worse issue is that the grout has turned white(the grout color for installation was mapei) in some places and there is a haze across the surface of the tile. I had suggested to them to use a grout release but they preferred to go without. Now they say its because of the texture of the tile and its too difficult to get the grout out properly!!!

Here are the questions:
1\) Is the bow usual for this size tile which ends up causing lippage after installation?
2\) Had they used a branded levelling system like Raymondi, would they have been able to achieve 1/16" grout lines?
3)Is there anything that can be done about the haze?
4)Anything that can be done about the white stuff on the grout lines?
5)Should they have used painters tape to mask off the walls before grouting?

**Q: Living room needs something** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This is a modular home we are planning to use as a vacation rental. We are on a limited budget and we aren't sure how the vacation rental business will work. I primed the walls with kilz and painted The upper walls with a semi gloss off white. They are papered with a textured paper. I tried to remove the paper, but the walls were getting destroyed in the process . It doesn't look too bad. Now I have all white walls, textured on top and painted panels on the bottom. I can add a chair rail. I'm wondering if I should carry the blue from the dining room to the chair rail to add color or is it too much blue? There is a fake brick feature wall at one end of the room. Any ideas?

**Q: Paint Color Needed For 6'X9' Powder Room, please** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi there, I have a guest powder room without windows and I desperately need help picking paint color that doesn't look muddy in here. Floor is black marble. Vanity and sink are staying. Would not mind replacing light fixture and adding accessories. I tried a sample of revere pewter and it looks brown (see picc). The color currently on the walls is SW starry night. Would love and appreciate any suggestions including a BM color. There is a small hall like area before entering the powder room and the pic with the furniture is of the adjoining family room. The majority of the wall color throughout the level is BM Muslin. Thanks a bunch!
