## Community Q&A

**Q: What is it...some variety of columbine?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This is Gaura lindheimeri, or appleblossom grass, a Southern Great Plains native and a relative of fireweed.

**Q: Where can I get these containers??** *(in Photo Questions)*

I really like these containers, where can I buy them?? Thanks!

A: I'm afraid I have no idea. They're at the food coop in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and you could call them and ask...

**Q: what are the grasses here** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Sarah, those are switchgrass (Panicum virgatum, a grass native to the North American prairies). I think these are the horticultural variety 'heavy metal.'

**Q: extending a previous garden** *(in Photo Questions)*

previous owners garden. the tree is now making too much shade. I need to move flowering plants forward to lite and redo under tree. making it bigger. Where to begin????

A: @Jill Lewallen, The first place I'd begin is with the tree. Does it need care or shaping? Can it be pruned up? If it's in good shape and can't be pruned up, then look at where the shade falls at different times of day and different seasons, and enlarge the bed to take advantage of the best sun. You may be able to plant some shade-loving flowering plants under the tree as well, depending on your eco-region and what will grown in your climate. Have fun!

**Q: Love the wrought fence and gate scroll work** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is the wrought iron fence and gate a custom piece?

A: I assume it is, but it's a photo I took walking through a neighborhood in Denver, so I don't know for sure.

**Q: beautiful plant!** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the name of this plant?

Thank you,

Susan Scheibe

A: @Susan Scheibe, This is Rocky Mountain Beeplant (Cleome serrulata), a western native annual wildflower. You can read about it in the article it's linked to above.
