We want to completely change out fireplace surround and mantle. We plan To lower slightly about 6 inches and widen about 3 on each side and put our tv above it. It just makes sense for our floor plan. We plan to also paint and beam ceiling. We are having hard time trying to figure out to we need to create a space that extends above mantle because of ceiling height. If you notice ceiling, it would be too odd to go up to because of weird too angle (and yes we are removing those ceiling lights). Anyway, trying to find ideas of style that would fit. Any ideas greatly appreciated. A: I"m so happy you are doing this! This oversized wall is going to look stunning with more of a mantle to accent your space. The wall is an awkward shape so I would not recommend extending the mantle to the top of the ceiling, however if you place your tv on top and choose and elegant lighting fixture to take up the remainder of the space above the tv, this would be an excellent way to tie it all in. I bought the previous owner's furniture with the house, because it was priced right, and I needed stuff to go in there. The room is 29 X 45 feet- like a lodge. The floor is not hardwood all the way- it is only hardwood about 3 feet around the edges, and they have a huge red carpet that covers the defect. So anyway, The furniture is classic and very well made, but the fabrics are too busy for me. There are 6 patterns, all in the red/ brown, green, yellow family. They had a large tufted yellow ottomon as well, but I replaced it with a wooden coffee table, and it already lowered my blood pressure a little. The large red rug has to stay- I got an estimate to replace it with tan for $13,000. Filling in the whole room with hardwood is also not a good idea, according to my contractor, due to sound. At least I do like red. We painted the walls white, the whole thing was wood. What would you do first to update this? I need a long range plan. I want to move more to solids and have fun pillows, and let the art stand out. I'll put up before and after pics with the previous owner's stuff and mine. A: Your space is incredible!! That window space is stunning, the appeal to your space will be based on your needs. If you have clients coming in for consultations, you may want to have your desk floating in front of the window providing an open concept appeal with lots of lighting and a view for the customer. Do not want different trim from room to room. Any suggestions? A: There are allot of different shades of brown going on in your home. I notice your counter tops are charcoal or black. I would suggest painting your cabinetry a classic white (Chantilly Lace), or a light grey. You could contrast this with a light wash grey vinyl flooring. The railings could compliment this colour scheme painting it white with a charcoal stain. We moved in an year ago and between floor replacement and trying to decorate the new place it all has been challenging! But it’s finally coming along! So, we have this high ceiling fireplace and and I’m looking for some ideas of putting our living room together. At first I had thought of putting up a large art piece on the wall next to it, but I am starting to think it will be much noisy with tons of information in one wall (fireplace / tv / tv “stand” / art and our fiddle tree), since we really want to keep our “tree” at that place inside. I was thinking about painting our walls (or the fire place wall) with SW Requisite gray, but I am thinking if it would be a good contrast with the fireplace stone color? I’m really confused!
