**★ — Hilary Evart, Jan. 2022**

> Perhaps in the past, Vanessa Nagel was skilled and competent in helping clients with landscape design. Unfortunately, in 2021, Ms. Nagel overpromised and undelivered. She took our money but did not follow through with anything of value. She admitted to being unresponsive and claimed challenges in her personal life were responsible. Steer clear.

**★★★★★ — Bernice Skoro, Sept. 2018**

> My husband and I had the great pleasure of working with Vanessa Nagel. She is professional, knowlegable beyond compare and someone who truly puts her heart and soul into her projects. We couldn’t be happier and still enjoy our beautiful French boxwood garden. Complete with boxwood birds and a giant Fleur De Lis. Rarely does a day go by that someone doesn’t rave about the stunning masterpiece that Vanessa created. We have also had Vanessa design landscapes for our businesses. The are just as stunning and each unique. We are truly grateful to have met a Vanessa. She has always been respectful of our deadlines and budget and always exceeded our expectations!

**★★★★★ — Lesley Cox, June 2018**

> My husband and I had the great pleasure of working with Vanessa Nagel on two projects at our home. One was considerably more complex than the other, but each required the type of skilled, insightful, flexible, and creative listening and thinking that she exemplifies. We loved her enthusiastic and open approach, and the way she led us through the process of clarifying and solidifying what became a shared vision. Vanessa was respectful of our budget and worked to consult with us on plant and hardscape materials, and to maximize the amount of labor we could do ourselves.
> We knew Vanessa to be the author of two garden books, and the fact that her own garden had been featured in numerous garden tours seemed a fitting testament to her abilities. From start to finish it was evident that her many years of experience, her gregarious nature, and her formal training as an interior and landscape design professional amply provided the tools necessary to so resourcefully create a pattern of rhythm and flow that we continue to appreciate and enjoy.

> I have been pleased to work with Vanessa on three different projects to date. First, she designed a beautiful garden for our beach duplex which featured a gorgeous assortment of native plants installed in separate outdoor "rooms" that created private spaces for duplex dwellers to enjoy.
> The second project was a massive redesign of a bleak condominium parking area landscape. Vanessa did a great deal of research to design a garden for our challenging micro climate -- salt air, raging winds and hungry elk. The result is breath taking.
> Our final project was a smaller scale reworking of my daughter's front yard. Vanessa addressed the steep slope with a new, pedestrian-friendly walkway and entry porch surrounded by a mixture of colorful, low maintenance plants just right for busy, millennial newlyweds. These projects have taken place over the past ten years with budgets ranging from a few thousand dollars to nearly 60 thousand for the condo project. Vanessa is the consummate professional whose vast knowledge of all phases of a project (plant selection & design, hardscape, lighting & irrigation) is reflected in detailed, multi-page plans. She is engaging and fun! I would work with her again in a heartbeat!

**★★★★★ — Shannon Pratuch, March 2017**

> My husband and I built a house recently and the builder left us with a muddy mess of a "yard." The HOA required us to have our front yard landscape completed in 6 months or less, and I started to panic. I have no clue about gardening! I just knew I wanted it to be beautiful, low-maintenance, and no lawn.
>
> A friend referred me to Vanessa, and in our very first meeting over a cup of coffee, I knew I could trust her 110%. She lights up the room with her super cheery attitude and is a fantastic listener. Vanessa doesn't impose her artistic vision on you; she grasps all your wants and needs.
>
> Vanessa is the entire package, and I can't tell you how relieved I am (over and over and over again!) to have her help. From the actual plans to advice and resources, there just is NO way I could have completed this project without her. The end results of my front yard are incredible. We have people drive by and tell us how much they appreciate our garden. They always comment on its beauty, a real "gardener's paradise," but they have no idea how easy the plants are that Vanessa chose! And I LOVE the fact that my yard is a million times better than all of the "basic" landscaper designs (sod and a few boring plants) that my neighbors have. Our front yard is practically a work of art!
>
> Vanessa is now collaborating with us on our backyard, and again, I can breathe a huge sigh of relief knowing that it's going to be a truly magnificent place to spend our time. Without hesitation, I recommend Vanessa!

**★★★★★ — Vanette Fontenette, Jan. 2017**

> Vanessa transformed our backyard from a rectangle with grass to a beautiful landscape that includes garden boxes, a water fountain, room for a trampoline in an area that helps it "disappear" from view, and a wide array of plants and trees. Vanessa planned it so that we have various things blooming in different seasons. She also consulted us on the best way to get rid of areas of standing water in our lawn and garden beds. She is very knowledgeable, patient and has a wealth of ideas and expertise to draw on. We highly recommend her.

**★★★★★ — Sharri LaPierre, Jan. 2017**

> Vanessa is an extraordinary person and a joy to work with. She listens to her clients and the result is that each job is an individual accomplishment, unlike some whose projects all look alike! I highly recommend Seasons Garden Design to everyone I know (and those I don't!)

## Selected projects

- [Swirls](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/swirls-pj-vj~109833)
 - Location: Vancouver, WA
 - Photos: 6
 - Description: A cottage style bungalow set amongst a conifer forest needed a garden. The owner, a print artist, also had a Celtic background and liked swirls. So the garden's theme was set. We used the swirl pattern at the new fire pit, a recycled glass 'duck pond', in a series of three arbors, and in a stone water feature in the center of the front garden defined by the circle of the driveway.
- [Columbia River View](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/columbia-river-view-pj-vj~1861052)
 - Location: Camas, WA
 - Photos: 22
 - Description: When we first set foot on this project it had developer’s boulder walls that were a complete disconnect with the contemporary house. The owner wanted to change that, but also wanted to keep the boulders. The southern side of the property is very steep, but has a fabulous view of the Columbia River. We needed to address the drainage issues that threatened erosion there as well as other areas around the house. The house is tall and on a promontory, so it needed some tall plantings, but not so dens…
- [Riverside Garden](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/riverside-garden-pj-vj~1842419)
 - Location: Battle Ground, WA

- [Grandparents Playground](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/grandparents-playground-pj-vj~1527192)
 - Location: Ridgefield, WA
 - Photos: 7
 - Description: This was a new home set on a hillside of about 2.5 acres. A forest exists below. A large septic tank area was covered in ornamental grasses and shallow-rooted perennials. The grasses and perennials were woven into the entire garden which includes stone retaining walls, a stone fire pit, two ponds, a brook to each of the ponds, a large concrete terrace and entry driveway, and a swim-spa.
- [Dragon Pebble Mosaic](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/dragon-pebble-mosaic-pj-vj~109850)
 - Location: Vancouver, WA
 - Photos: 3
 - Description: An existing lawn near large, thirsty fir tree roots always had an unquenched thirst for water. We replaced the blonde haze that was 'dying' to be lawn with a circular symbol, meeting the garden's theme "Peace Through Culture". The pebble mosaic is an ouroborus that is a multi-cultural symbol of the circle of time. In some cultures it is a snake, in others it is a dragon. Because the garden has an Asian flavor, with Pacific Northwest plants, a dragon was the logical choice. Minding the metaphor,…
- [Mountain Terrace](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mountain-terrace-pj-vj~1527157)
 - Location: Battle Ground, WA
 - Photos: 7
 - Description: The challenge on this project was to minimize the visual impact of the concrete driveway and retaining wall and create a way to get from the entry to a lower place to take advantage of their incredible valley view. The concrete had a large crack near the entry steps. We selected a stone tile that matched the stone that would be used for paths, steps, and terrace to cover the existing concrete steps to the front door. At the driveway level, we removed all of the concrete from the crack to the ent…
- [Artist's Zen](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/artist-s-zen-pj-vj~1825296)
 - Location: Vancouver, WA
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: Changing a typical ranch style home into a contemporary home including a massive expansion was how this project began. With drawings from the architect Seasons Garden Design responded to the owners’ request for a Zen-style garden that would be an escape for their very busy lives as high-tech company executives. Requested originally was a large stone water feature for the back that they could see from their bedroom and living room windows. Affectionately known as the ‘pile o’ rocks’ during the pl…
- [Bricks and Stone](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bricks-and-stone-pj-vj~109856)
 - Location: Camas, WA
 - Photos: 4
 - Description: A black backyard of nothing but grass was transformed into more usable space by extending a new cover over an expanded patio. A fire pit, seat wall, raised planters and a brick and stone water feature make the setting inviting to view the new garden.
- [Lotus Symbol Garden](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lotus-symbol-garden-pj-vj~2300314)
 - Location: Vancouver, WA
 - Photos: 7
 - Description: The home of a divorced obstetrician/pediatrican was undergoing a massive remodel to become more of a contemporary/Craftsman home. They needed to completely redo the front yard which included a massive cracked concrete driveway and lots of weeds. We took the idea of the doctor's profession and the house style and generated a lotus symbol (symbol of birth in Japanese culture which also relates to Arts & Crafts design) to use in the front gate and the pendant light at the porch. New columns to fit…
- [OREGON COAST](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/oregon-coast-pj-vj~2298513)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 5
 - Description: This beach garden surrounds a parking lot that had to be redesigned to minimize asphalt and increase access for tenants, the fire department, and their garbage company. It needed tough plants to weather the extreme wind, salt air, sandy soil, and the resident elk herd that wanders through periodically. Plants used have blue or white flowers to reflect the ocean backdrop. They are drought-tolerant once established and there is something blooming nearly all year. Plants include Gaura, Asters, Euph…

## Community Q&A

**Q: construction** *(in Photo Questions)*

is this weight bearing, what sort of base did you lay, how thick do you screet the mortar, and do you float the mortar level before placing? please and thank you, magnificent job!

A: The base is 3" of compacted 5/8 minus crushed gravel. Then there is a 2" mortar bed into which the stones are poked. Once the area is filled with the stones, a piece of plywood is place over the bed (and there must be a screed of some type of material, leveled to help the board do its job of leveling the stones).
