> We recently had the opportunity of working with Lori Jolin on updating our Master Bath. The project progressed very smoothly with a minimum of disruption to us. We attribute this to Lori's construction knowledge as well as her design expertise. All Lori's subcontractors were excellent, responsive and their attention to detail was impressive.
>
> We enjoyed working with Lori and are more than pleased with the final result. Our remodeled bathroom is beautiful, functional and perfect for us.
>
> Lori was attentive and responsive for the entire project, we highly recommend her.

> We bought our 2nd house based on the location and not because of the condition of the house. It needed complete make over. Basically ended up gutting out the whole house. :)
> Lori was totally fine with me doing some of the work which wasn't welcomed by others.
> We were able to add 2 more bathrooms(2 of them attached to bedrooms), include walk in closet(how can you go without it these days). She brought these big ideas but also ton of small ideas that only someone creative with years of experience can. She suggested to add patio door instead of the existing window from one bedroom to the sunroom/play room that created totally different flow and makes so much sense. I would never thought of that. Added few sliding doors which let us to optimize the space. How to design the bathrooms so you use space properly to include spot for linen closets. Oh, powder room is too big? No worries I have an idea how we can shrink it and include built in wine/beer cooler & hutch on the other side in dinning area.Genius!
> After few weeks of working with us she was able to bring us 1 sample of carpets for 2 rooms and tiles for master bathroom that both me and my wife agreed on right away. We didn't go to the store, she didn't ask us to look online, or bored with multiple samples at home. Just 1 sample for each room. Yes, we discussed the wall colors and total scheme for the house but still looking back this is mind blowing. Guess where we get a lot of compliments? The tile and carpets! Never knew people notice the carpet so much!
> The whole process was as much of the breeze as choosing carpets and tile.
> Had to recommend her to few friends and neighbors after they've seen her work.

> I received no value whatsoever from her, and she billed me for her time anyway.
>
> Room dimensions were incorrect (I never even received a real CAD drawing of everything - and what she called a CAD was room dimensions on a piece of paper - with a number of my rooms totally missing). She would continually get confused about what room was what room - as I repeated myself over and over. It got to be very frustrating. She was totally disorganized.
>
> I’ll cover just a few points below. (There were many many more…)
>
> She had no creative ideas whatsoever other than to “paint the trim white” to make things brighter (if you call that creative) -- in a mid-century modern home no less. And her stock answer to everyone it appears - is “make your windows bigger.”
>
> She said that a basement bathroom location I wanted wasn't possible due to ceiling height. I finally got her to realize that that wasn't the case after both a plumber and a GC told me that she was incorrect. The plumber took about 5 seconds to plot out exactly where everything needed to be. My advice is if you are planning a bathroom - call a plumber for a free consultation. They will tell you exactly where it needs to be - and can rough it out for you without a middleman fee.
> She called the mid century modern wrought iron bars that came with the house "so Elvis" (a little unprofessional I’d say...)
>
> She didn’t realize that the wall between what was to be a bedroom in the basement and the furnace room was a supporting wall.
>
> An architect I ended up using (who was great) stated "She doesn't have any credentials nor does she have much experience and is pretty naive / uninformed about things from my past conversation with her" I have to say - that was certainly accurate.
>
> With me paying her - at least she could have given me something that I could actually use - such as a real CAD drawing - but she didn’t. (Her sidekick Kate’s measurements weren’t ever correct - it was like dealing with frick and frack - they couldn’t get anything right.)
>
> She stated “I am not an architect, and never said I was.” I told her I didn’t think she was - but I at least expected her to measure properly - and not omit rooms for drawings, and know where supporting walls were, and know that a bathroom could actually go where I wanted it to be.
>
> She provided no basement redesign plan - not even a lighting plan. Her sketched deck concept on the back of a napkin was a joke - and didn’t even have a suggestion for materials. (I ended up getting a very beautiful Brazilian hardwood deck that had great lines to it.)
>
> She called a lighting plan "decorative details" to come after - yet I needed it to get an accurate quote. I asked for many months for a ballpark quote - and then when she finally did - it was so full of exclusions as to be worthless.
>
> I would never refer her to anyone. Use an architect - at least they know what they are doing. My advice would be to use a specialist. Note that many architects are half her ridiculous per hour rate - and they have a lot more credentials.

**Comment from Lori Jolin Design, LLC.:**

> We take pride in coming up with unique and personalized designs for our clients. We have clients that have hired us to do multiple projects or multiple homes, which is reflected in our photos and our reviews. Our first meeting is more of a “meet and greet” to get a feeling of the scope of a project, see if it is a project where we could bring value and if we are a good fit for the client and vice versa.
>
> We always give the potential client our 2 page document that explains our various services, how we charge for those services, and then leave it behind to “read and sign” before we do any drawings or estimates. We value our time and our expertise, as well as those of our subcontractors. This process was followed with you as well, as we always do prior to time spent.
>
> At the time, you were living in Illinois and coming up on weekends to settle your parent’s estate. You were uncertain if it made sense and you wanted us to price out several items for a possible renovation of the property. You had a lot to decisions to make, along with your sister, who also lived out of State and realize this was very stressful.
>
> You entrusted us with a key to your home to bring in various contractors to obtain pricing for all new windows, floor refinishing, framing out a few rooms in the basement and adding a bathroom. You were also present at several of those meetings with the various subcontractors. We took samples for you to the State lab for asbestos testing, and possible lead paint, which we suggested was necessary for a home built during that time period (which turned out to be positive). Precautionary safety measures would be necessary during renovation.
>
> There were months of pricing, many phone calls and a great number of emails during that time period to determine if purchasing this home was going to be an option or if you would purchase another property. We did a very basic Cad drawing to get estimates from plumbers, electricians, a carpenter, a drywaller, and window suppliers for pricing, all whom we met at your home on several occasions.
>
> We did discuss the support wall in the basement on the very first meeting, as well as with the carpenter in obtaining bids to frame up the walls. We suggested using a sliding barn door into the front bedroom down there, so you could actually get furniture in that space. We also gave you two different options where the bathroom could be located. We never said it could not be located there, only mentioned code requirements. Our job is to give you viable options for the space, then you decide the pros & cons.
>
> We did not include your storage space in the drawing because it was not in the “scope of work”. You said you weren’t going to do anything different and nothing would be done there. The basic CAD drawings were only to get bids for specific items and code upgrades.
>
> There were a multitude of changing ideas and you certainly kept us on our toes trying to figure out which ones you wanted. Other than adding new windows, we had not even gotten to any Design ideas. It is how we start our process, to see if it is viable in the client’s price range.
>
> We aim to work with every client so they are fully satisfied with our services. It had become clear that we were not the best fit for each other when I recommended you find a Contractor that better suited your needs and your time frame last July. I felt that was the best decision for both of us.
>
> I am sorry if you were dissatisfied with our service. We gave you the actual estimates from the subcontractors, along with the drawings, not a square foot bulk number. Perhaps it helped with your ultimate decision to purchase the home. Of the 16 hours we recorded, we gave you a 9 hour discount and only charged you for 6 hours of our time.
>
> We wish you the best, hope you were able to find the right person to complete your project, and you have the home you will be happy in for years to come.

> I hired Lori Jolin for my house in town, then moved to the country n hired her again. She is a very talented designer. I just love how my basement remodel turned out and I get so many compliments on it. She is timely and good at problem solving and good at codinating all the sub-contractors. She is also a fun and kind person. I not only got a beautiful basement I also got a friend. I highly recommend Lori Jolin Design.

> I hired Lori Jolin Design to assist with the interior detail for my new home while under construction. Lori's expertise and attention to detail led to some changes in window size and placement that had she not been involved would have meant years of regret. The larger windows Lori suggested, which face private wooded acreage in the back of the home are enjoyed daily! Lori also played a significant role in assisting with finishes in the kitchen, flooring, lighting and hardware. She was also given carte blanche with regards to all bathroom design, layout and materials, all of which turned our beautifully. Lori introduced me to a cabinet maker that not only exceeded my expectations with regards to quality, finish and service but saved me thousands of dollars. Lori's enthusiasm and positive energy is infectious and it helped make the project fun and keep it on track. I would highly recommend Lori Jolin Design to anyone considering new construction or renovation.

> We worked with Lori Jolin Design, LLC for our kitchen remodel. We really appreciated having the same people driving the project from design through construction. Lori and her team allowed us to consider ideas we hadn't thought of on our own. We are very happy with the end result!

**★★★★★ — marimadden, Dec. 2015**

> My husband and I wanted to re-do our master bathroom and we knew it would be a lot of work to complete. We wanted someone who would listen to our suggestion but also know what would work and give their expertise. We were able to find that in Lori and her staff. Everyone was very engaged and looked at details to make our bathroom a spa like feeling.
> The steam shower is so beautiful and relaxing.

**★★★★★ — lsyth, Dec. 2015**

> Interior design of new home. Lori and her assistant, Kate, were invaluable. From redesigning the layout to finding talent the contractor could not--Lori took us under her wing and tirelessly helped us cross the finish line to a new home.

**Comment from Lori Jolin Design, LLC.:**

> Thanks, Linda! We appreciate your trust in us when helping with your new home. One of our favorite parts (aside from your love of bold colors!) was incorporating some of your husband's old family barnwood into your home. It certainly adds character and a personal touch! - Lori and Kate

**★★★★★ — k8baldwin, Dec. 2015**

> Lori remodeled our bathroom and installed new flooring throughout our home. She was our designer and contractor. Her ability to determine what our favorite styles are was uncanny. She was able to quickly translate our generalized ideas into specific tiles, flooring, etc. She is very easy and fun to communicate with, and she was always easy to get a hold of. We had a few details that had to be worked out last minute, like a tile that was narrower than the plans, and a backslash that was not accounted for in measurements, but the final result is excellent.
>
> Lori was honest and professional. I'm sure we paid more to have a professional designer like Lori, instead of just a regular contractor. But we got more. Our bathroom is truly spectacular and unusual. It looks really sleek, but in reality we have storage galore. Lori thought of practical things we never would have. We have storage cubbies under the bench in our shower, so I am able to store my 5+ types of shower soaps/shampoos out of sight.
>
> All of the work was done by sub-contractors, some of which I liked more than others, but Lori kept after all of them and coordinated them well.
>
> Our bathroom is the highlight of our house, and we love it!

**Comment from Lori Jolin Design, LLC.:**

> Thanks, Kate! Jeremy's and your enthusiasm and involvement with the remodel was refreshing and greatly appreciated. We're thrilled you love your sleek, nature-inspired bathroom. The shower cubbies (and storage in the half-wall) have become a favorite idea when presenting concepts and solutions to clients with a similar size master bath - as you say, it's a great way to keep the clutter out of sight! -Lori and Kate

**★★★★★ — jklaw0402, Dec. 2015**

> I picked Lori Jolin Design, LLC specifically because Lori has both general contracting skills and a background in interior design. It was a perfect match. She started by directing me to houzz so I could start an idea book that was then shared with her. From my idea book she was able to understand my sense of style and make recommendations; this meant she sent me pictures and/or brought me samples of her suggestions (cabinets, countertops, plumbing fixtures, flooring...etc.) so I was not overwhelmed by going to lighting stores, plumbing stores, flooring stores, cabinet shops...etc. Her suggestions were spot on each and every time.
> The project itself was beautifully managed. There was real time communication almost daily about what was happening that week. An onsite notebook provided the subs, Lori, and me additional ways to ask questions or leave comments. I was told the project would take ten weeks - and it did!
> As with most homeowners, I was on a budget - small by kitchen remodel standards. Lori gave me her undivided time and attention and I never felt that because I was small I was "less than."
> I highly recommend Lori Jolin Design, LLC - I really can't say enough good things about this business.

**Comment from Lori Jolin Design, LLC.:**

> Thank you Janice for the great review! You were so fun to work with and so enthusiastic about all our ideas...especially the bright red subway tiles we used as a back splash. The final design of the kitchen is contemporary and fun. We will be posting pictures of the completed project, so stay tuned!

> We hired Lori Jolin to assist us in the design and renovation of our existing twenty-five year old home. During this remodel, which from start to finish took over a year, we completely gutted 3600 square feet of the first and second floors of our home. Beginning with our initial meeting with Lori, we were impressed by her expertise, creativeness, and professionalism. Lori listened, asked us questions about our likes, tastes, and desires, and then assisted us in determining what our dream home could look like. She was cognizant of the fact that this is our home and our ideas were important and respected. She was willing to work as a team and be patient with us until every detail was perfect.
>
> Lori is truly a wonderful designer that also understands the construction process. This is a unique quality that made her invaluable in all phases of our project from conceptual design to the completion of final finishes. Our project involved redesigning all living spaces including the kitchen, master bath, powder room, family room, sunroom, dining room, living room, craft room, laundry room, and three bedrooms. The two story foyer she helped create is truly a show piece and something we are most proud of. She has impeccable taste and extensive knowledge of products available in the industry including lighting and plumbing fixtures, masonry, windows, appliances, cabinetry, tile/flooring, window treatments, countertops, door/cabinet hardware, and furniture. She understood the importance of making material selections in a timely fashion as not to delay job progress. She recommended many of and met with all sub-contractors that we utilized. She was calm, responsive, innovative, and able to positively resolve any issues that arose.
>
> Lori went above and beyond to make sure that every detail of our home met our expectations. Lori was hands on from designing floral arrangements to physically hand painting a light fixture to assure it matched the décor of the room. We would highly recommend hiring our designer and friend, Lori Jolin, for any building or remodeling projects. We love love love our completed home; we are ecstatically happy with every detail of it. It truly is a reflection of our tastes and desires.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Vanity** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please provide information obout the vanity? It's exactly what I've been looking for!!

A: Annie,
Thank you for your inquiry. The Cabinet is from "Holiday" cabinets and custom designed for the client by a local company. We raised it to look like a floating cabinet but the toe kick is actually set back to make it appear that way.
Thanks,
Lori Jolin

**Q: Shower** *(in Photo Questions)*

What are the dimensions of the shower?

A: The shower is approximately 4' x 5'. We took out a corner tub and created this beautiful walk in shower with a bench seat.

**Q: Beautiful pendants!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please tell me what is the distance between the counter top and the bottom of the pendant? Thanks

A: I am looking to do a wood island counter-top with an under-mount sink like this and noticed this one has one. What company is this from and how does the counter-top hold up where there could be water from the faucet?

**Q: Hallway** *(in Photo Questions)*

What colour is the paint in the hall? We are trying to get a colour which goes with yellow oak.

A: Sharon, Thanks for your inquiry. This was a unique project and the client wanted to keep the original tall Base & casing in the 100 year old home. We removed it and reinstalled it after the renovation was completed. We used a few different colors in this home. All are Sherwin Williams paint colors in an eggshell finish. The hallways are 6148 Wool skein, the Living room is 6108 Latte, and the kitchen & powder room are 7621 Silvermist. Good luck with your project! Lori @LoriJolinDesign.com

**Q: Bedding?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Where did the Bedding come from

A: Hi Valerie! Thanks for your interest in this bedroom! The bedding is beautiful, isn't it? We purchased fabric and had our seamstress make the set. I'm not sure if the fabric is still available, as it was made in 2010.

**Q: Lovely granite. Was this used on the backsplash?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I have chosen a similar granite and would like to use it in a creamy off white kitchen. Would this pattern be too much for a backsplash?

A: Hi kitfoxhome, thanks for your question. The White Persia granite (suede finish) was not used on the backsplash; instead we used Daltile (Cortona in White Flora) as the field tile and integrated mosaics to tie in color. They complement each other quite nicely, don't they?
If your granite tops are a very busy pattern, we'd suggest keeping your backsplash simple. This contrast will highlight your beautiful granite and keep them the main focus. In our opinion, it would look very busy if the backsplash and countertops were the same material - there would be nothing to break it up visually. Another consideration is the cost of a granite backsplash would be much higher than using a porcelain or ceramic tile; for some, it's simply not an option.
We hope this helps answer your question. Feel free to ask us any other questions you may have about this material or project.
