Since this new commission was for the loft a very demanding customer, myself, I wanted to get it right! Objective: in an all white (walls and floor) and luminous loft, get the right purple hue for the ceiling. Not finding what I liked through the charts of half a dozen of the best paint manufacturers, I thought of Henri - I had seen several of his creations and suspected he was the right artisan for the problem at hand. I showed him what I liked or disliked and he was able to tell me why: Henri has a detailed, masterful sense of colors - his skill is like the one of a star sommelier when detecting hints of dried fruits in a wine… once he draws one’s attention to it, it becomes evident, and the reason for pleasure or disappointment becomes clear - there is nothing like certainty to make me happy about my choice of color, especially for such a huge ceiling. Henri proceeded to show me how a purple hue was too cold for the kind of living space I wanted to create and how a dark raspberry was probably more the along the effect I was looking for. He was not at all worried that no such color came off the shelf; he proceeded to concoct his own recipes. “Recipes” is plural because research was required: the geographic orientation of the loft is South-East and the beautiful effect of color in the evening was not at all acceptable in the bright morning. Mainly for my benefit (I needed to be convinced), Henri developed three distinct patches of 16 sq.ft. side-by-side to observe the effect of lighting in an 18-hour cycle; taking that extra day in the project was the best investment I have made in the entire apartment, given that I did not want not to re-touch this ceiling for many years! The color effect was still not perfect until Henri showed the painters how the base coat needed to be a sustained shade of grey before applying the magnificent custom raspberry in a matte finish. The end result, a stunning dark raspberry ceiling, if for sure “out of the ordinary”, but it’s not at all “in your face”; it very classy yet modern and SO rich - at all times of the day. Here is a paradox: it’s precisely because Henri listened intently to what I wanted that he was able to distill the essence of my needs and propose something different from my initial request; this honing-in process is the best type of collaboration you could hope for to avoid the anarchy of creating egos having to work side by side. No picture proved to be adequate to translate the subtlety of the results that can only be experienced. **★★★★★ — User, Dec. 2014** > Henri Koshen worked on all the colors in my home, from the 'neutrals' to the very rich jewel tones. He identified the colors, helped me to choose fabrics, and painted the surfaces (all custom mixed colors, ranging from creamy pale walls to multi layered coppery walls, layered golden hued walls, multi brown hues, soft lavender grays). He has an intuitive sense of what enhances a space, making it unique and extraordinary. His lifelong passion as an artist hugely enhanced my project. Henri Koshen also did a spectacular (and unusual and beautiful) mural that adds originality, warmth and mystery to my home. We worked on this project over the course of several years (my choice).
