I am the founder and principle in my boutique firm ColeDesign Studio - an established Toronto based design firm. My look is Classic with an edge... and I strive for 'timeless appeal', 'casual elegance' and 'easy living'. I believe we should be nourished by the things we love, and find ways to - with reason- have them around us. Making these things work together as a harmonious whole can be a challenge well worth the effort. I strive to create small surprises and moments of beauty in a space with a spirit, complexity and depth. Like most, I am always looking to create the classic look with the ubiquitous timeless appeal.

**★★★★★ — Lucie G, May 2019**

> We hired Karen when renovating our very first home in Toronto. From the moment we met her, we liked her style and her sense of colour! Since then, we’ve worked with Karen on other projects and she has without fail, always exceeded our expectations. We always enjoyed working with her and we look forward to working with her again on our next project. Her creativity and her ability to adapt to constant changes make her an ideal designer to work with. Karen designed the interior of our home in Toronto almost 12 years ago and there is not a day that goes by without me loving this house.

**Comment from ColeDesign Studio:**

> Lucie - Thank you so much for your kind words I always enjoy working with you both and have enjoyed watching the growth of your beautiful family. The projects we have done together are among my favourites. Our working relationship is easy and the Ideas and epiphanies seem to appear like magic. Each of your projects have been uniquely different - one from the other and I have loved each of them.

> Karen hears and intuits your preferences and vision. She takes your ideas to an elevated level beyond anticipation. This is the second home Karen has designed for me and it is as high functioning as it is spectacular. Her sense of style and design is beautifully detailed and customized. A unique approach to layering and whimsy is signature. Karen’s transformations of space are remarkable from her exceptionally designed kitchens, hidden storage and overall striking design surprises. The entire process working with Karen and her exquisite creativity is delightful. And most important, it feels wonderful to live in Karen’s spaces.

**Comment from ColeDesign Studio:**

> I have used the services of ColeDesign Studio for almost 20 years for projects ranging from major renovations to colour consultations. Regardless of the project size, Karen always does everything necessary to ensure success. I enjoy working with her very much and recommend her highly. She always pushes the envelope a little, resulting in a finished product that I would not have arrived at on my own. Her designs are warm, welcoming and current without being too trendy.

**Comment from ColeDesign Studio:**

> I have very much appreciated our very longstanding relationship of working together on many projects as they present themselves. ... and I look forward to the next.

**★★★★★ — bmhschamberger, June 2016**

> I have worked with Karen Cole several times over the past 15 years, on projects of different scopes - it has always been a pleasure. She is very good at establishing a client's taste preferences and working with them, while always maintaining her originality and creativity, which are substantial, she is not afraid of challenging a client's ideas if she sees problems with them, she is flexible in terms of scheduling, forthright, and respectful of financial determinations.

**★★★★ — Susan Guichon, May 2016**

> I hired Karen to help with a living and sun room renovation. I liked how she allowed me to make all of the choices on materials and would only step in if I was making a bad call. She has a great sense for colour and space. I most appreciated how she finished each project down to the accent pieces. I was so happy with this project that I used her again for a kitchen/powder room renovation. Again I am very happy with the result. She was particularly good with a unique look with functionality, storage space and again, the fine tuning that provided a great finish.

**★★★★★ — melhebs, May 2016**

> We were thrilled with the results. Cole Design was professional, respectful of our needs and budget, and a pleasure to work with. We would absolutely hire this design company again for future projects!

**★★★★★ — Andrea Weissman-Daniels, May 2016**

> Karen Cole is a wonderful designer. She is creative, imaginative and full of resources. Karen loves colour, texture and originality. She has a flare for the exotic and yet can bring any vision to life. Karen is friendly and professional and very easy to work with.

  - Description: This Panabode structure was beautifully redesigned by a prominent Toronto architectural firm. My job was the interior design for the entire space. Part of the 2nd floor was removed to allow for the lofty living. Space was partially re-allocated with the addition of a 2 story curtain wall across the back side allowing for exquisite views from above and below throughout the living areas. - Location: Collingwood, ON
  - Photos: 21
  - Description: This is an intimate airy, and spacious home on the water. A plan for open living became possible when the architect removed some of the interior walls of a recent 'new build'. He created an open space allowing for a 'big' view through the home from front to back through large sliding doors extending across the back of the house. The beautiful water vista view has inspired all of the colours, and the textures used throughout. The varied ceiling heights help to create a sense of intimacy as you mo…

  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: The 'before' and the 'after' here is like the difference between DAY and NIGHT. Using the same footprint and opening slightly to a small adjacent den space, allowed us to create this long, open and very functional 'eat-in' kitchen. The layout changed drastically. The anchor of the room is the large hood which had to be located under the long narrow upper window. After that, everything fell into place. The wood floor replaced a black and white ceramic tile to perfectly match the rest of the home.
- [Townhouse Kitchen](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/townhouse-kitchen-pj-vj~1681302)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: The task at hand for this kitchen renovation was to overlap the existing kitchen floor space almost precisely BUT to magically find additional storage space and provide preparation and serving counters where none were available before. While this sounds like an impossible task, we achieved these goals and more! by swapping out the 'eat-in' dining space at the front window with a reduced spot for sipping cappuccino at a bar across the front window. The rest of the space was claimed by the kitchen…

All ceilings were lifted, grey tones mix with blue throughout. Modern elements, painted wood and customized furnishings were used to maximize every inch.

  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: When downsizing, the challenge is always going to be how to find a place for your favourite things and HOW to make them work well together. This townhouse had high ceilings, good bones and an open feeling from front to back. We removed the front entry closet and shifted the kitchen to the back of the home, further opening the space. Old and new are mixed with colour and pattern. See more at House and Homes TV's segment http://houseandhome.com/tv/segment/after-bold-colourful-townhouse?vb=th&thr=1…

  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: I love a banquette. Typically, upholstered seating along a wall or under a window, adds so more to a room. Whether it's for 1 person or a crowd, for perching or for climbing into to read a book or have a nap, the banquette is a show stopper. Functionally, It allows us to squeeze more 'bums' into our room, or at the dining table. It's a place to dream by the window, or to get cozy when you are alone in a large room. We can dress it up or down, throwing beautiful pillows on it, while stashing chil…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Pendants** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you share details about the pendants?

A: Thanks for asking about these pendants. I love them too. These lights were custom made for my client a couple of years ago. It's difficult to see the top detail in the photo, but they were actually joined together by a bar to create one single pendant which hangs from a single bar. I'd be happy to help you to replicate this fixture if you wanted to try to do that. You can give me a call at 416-565-6562 (mobile number is the easiest way to reach me).

**Q: Love the bed** *(in Photo Questions)*
