**★★★★★ — etc123, Sept. 2023**

> HomeMasons came out and did some repairs to our back stoop. They waterproofed and made a super-stable porch. We just love the color and workmanship. There are no screws visible, and the materials are first rate. The carpenters Rafel and Kevin were a pleasure to work with. The whole project was done in a day and half and they did an outstanding job. They guarantee their work, and have gone waaay beyond expectations to accommodate our situation.

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Thanks, y'all! We do try our best, and happy that you are so pleased with our work. Appreciate your putting out "the good word" on us!

**★ — Adrian Mead, July 2023**

> I would greatly caution anyone from using HomeMasons. Starting in 11-2022 and running through 04-2023 we worked with HomeMasons to complete one project with two main pieces of work:
> 1\. A trapdoor in our atrium for interior basement access.
> 2\. Rough stairs for the aforementioned trapdoor.
> We chose HomeMasons as they has previously completed an interior trapdoor on a house and Richmond and were able to coordinate us seeing it. They assured us this was a place of expertise for them.
>
> The early stages of design and the planning process were seamless but as construction started, our initial 2-week estimate for work turned into 3 months of unending stress. This was a major pain point, and given the nature of the job as Time and Materials (T&M), this guaranteed that we were going to go well over the upper estimates they had provided us for the job ($11k-$16k), and resulted in me turning to another contractor to complete the project.
>
> I have a wide variety of other things I didn't like:
>
> \- The work slowdown was caused by engineering failures that were negligent.
> It's clear that HomeMasons had not planned adequately for our project. Given the T&M that became our problem. Over 2 iterations of their ideas they had only delivered a non-functioning trapdoor and a sizable hole in my wallet. For anyone that's engineering-minded here were the big mistakes:
> 1\. First, they installed a 1/2-inch piano hinge (absolutely tiny and affixed to the hardwood floor itself). To be clear the role of this hinge is to bear about 100 lbs of weight. It started failing on the first use and caused splitting in our hardwood. There is 0% chance this was ever going to work, and given their expertise they should have known that.
> 2\. Then they recommended a larger gauge piano hinge. We had this hinge installed as well and after ~2 months of little use it is also failing. This was another bad idea as it is also not long enough and is screwed into subflooring.
>
> \- Poor communication from the lead on my project
> I always had to call to get updates, find out timetables, figure out when work would be done, etc. I'm told this was because my lead was bad and 2 months in he was fired and replaced with Mason Hearn (the owner), but he was not better. I was not notified my project lead had been changed until of course I called to find it out several days after the change.
>
> \- I have multiple instances of Mason/my lead misrepresenting things to me directly and refusing to take care of certain parts of the project.
> For example, they increased the scope of work and charged me an extra ~$400 for parts (and what would have likely been $1,000 for labor) that I was neither notified of nor agreed to. When I asked Mason to have these parts returned to get a credit back to my account, he told me they were required to address comments on the permit inspection. This was untrue, and I called the permit inspector to confirm that the comment was not a required change.

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Clearly, we failed to meet your expectations for this project and of course, I am regretful of that. I am sure that communication could have been better between you and our field operations staff. Additionally, yes; I agree that the hinge originally ordered and installed for your floor hatch was inadequate for its intended purpose... and that there was a delay in completion as we hashed-out requirements for proper remedy of that detail.
>
> I do take issue with a number of your other points, and was under the impression that you understood and were working with us on certain things (including a Code Official request... which when we were notified in writing of these requirements, we are bound to comply).
>
> I do also note that, having called and emailed a number of times to check-in and arrange for completion, we received no response. At the time communication ceased from your end, and at present, I also note that the project stood below the total projected budget range.
>
> So, while I respect and validate your feelings on this matter, and affirm that we should have operated in such a manner that you would have a more positive experience, I am saddened that your public review would include such things which are not entirely well-supported.
>
> HomeMasons has a 30-year reputation of serving our clients beyond their satisfaction. Yes; in these complex little creative solutions such as this referenced, things may go a bit sideways... yet we have, and always will be, available to remedy in the best and most expeditious way possible. I am sorry that we were not given the opportunity to do so here.

**★★★★★ — Wendy Dickinson, March 2023**

> When we bought our home we knew that there were problems with the porch. There was rot, and something just felt off about it.
> As it turns out, it took someone with both expertise and a creative eye to identify the correct proportions & scale for the columns, railing and fascia. Once HomeMasons completed the project, everything was aligned and the correct dimensions. It made such a difference to the house.
>
> The HomeMasons team were great to work with - detailed estimates, a professional team that cleaned up each day, and the project was concluded both on time and on budget. We are very pleased and highly recommend that HomeMasons team. We look forward to working with them on our next home project.

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Thank you for your kind words, Wendy. Our entire team enjoyed working with you. We are always thrilled to apply our talents to bringing-out the best in every client’s home… and even happier that our customer is so pleased with the process and reaults!

**★★★★★ — Attic to playroom and office remodel, March 2023**

> Home Masons did a fantastic job on our project! They completed the project ahead of schedule, were always respectful of our home, timely and efficient, and overall just very pleasant to work with. I would highly recommend them!

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Thank you for your positive review! We hope your growing family is enjoying the added living space and organized storage we added in your attic. As you know, we hope to have some professional photos to post here, soon.

**★★★★★ — Sandra Kozusko, March 2019**

> Professional creative knowledgeable staff and great to work with. Project completed on schedule. Beautiful kitchen and dining room much more functional.

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Thank you for taking the time to review us, Sandra. I have enjoyed knowing and working with you and Tom for years, and am so happy that we were able to create a fabulous new kitchen for you. I know that you are enjoying it!!

**★★★★★ — Morgan Adams, May 2017**

> I hired Mason to do a complete remodel of my kitchen and master bathroom. The result was simply stunning and outstanding! Not only that, the process was fantastic. Mason and his team kept me informed of the progress every step of the way. Mason only hires the very best sub-contractors. Not only were they expert craftsmen, they were polite and considerate, as I lived through three week os the renovation. I cannot recommend Mason and HomeMasons enough.

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Thank you for your kind review, Morgan. We very much enjoyed working with you as well! Glad you are enjoying your new spaces.

**★★★★★ — Christie Smith, Jan. 2017**

> I had a very positive experience with HomeMasons . The crew was prompt , courteous , and efficient . They dealt willingly with the logistical issues at my site - limited space for parking and staging , as well as the presence of my very large dogs in the work area !. I would definitely use them again .

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Christie,
> Thank you so much for taking the time to review our experience together. We enjoyed learning about your Newfoundland dogs, to design and build an addition that well-accommodated their needs. Miss you, and those dogs! We will always be right down the road if you need anything.

**★★★★ — abigailcat, Aug. 2016**

> Completely redesigned/built two bathrooms and renovated another. Spent a lot of time talking with us about what we wanted and was respectful of our budget. Sub-contractors were friendly and easy to work with. Did a really good job of cleaning up at the end of each day, and minimizing the construction debris in the rest of the house.

**★★★★★ — Jared Jones, Aug. 2016**

> HomeMansons transformed our basement from drab to fab! What was once just a dark storage area is now a vibrant entertainment space (complete with a huge bar and dance floor!). The quality of work from Mason and crew was top-notch and we couldn't be more happy with the outcome. I would highly recommend to any and everyone!

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Thanks for your review, Jared. It was a BLAST doing this basement makeover in ONE DAY for you and Josh. We all have wondered what it was like behind the scenes of "done in a day" home makeover shows. Now we know. I'm still recuperating!

**★★★★★ — Kim Bruffy, Aug. 2016**

> When I was looking for a contractor, I wanted to find someone to work with for many years to come. I interviewed several, but really liked the fact Mason is an architect and contractor. He understands how to detail a project and he makes sure we are on the same page before he begins. We have used Home Masons and Handyman Services on five projects and they always exceed our expectations.

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> LOVE your porch, Kim. Always enjoy working with you and look forward to the next one!

**★★★★★ — ohkuhl, July 2016**

> HomeMasons does outstanding work. They are experts in listening to and understanding client needs and promote/know the importance of the design phase of the project. The results were all that we expected and hoped for. Mason Hearn is professional, friendly and of the highest integrity. His workers are professional, friendly and extremely clean. More than ten years after we completed our kitchen and surrounding area redesign, we are extremely happy with all the work. They do fantastic work and will do what ever it takes to make sure you are completely satisfied.

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Thank you for your kind words, Hank. We very much enjoyed working with you on your kitchen and related remodeling projects! Loved creating beautiful custom American Cherry cabinets, and creating interest with a skewed angle reflected in the flooring direction, island, countertop, and the light "cloud" which was also custom-made of matching cherry.

**★★★★★ — mcdanielp, June 2016**

> Homemasons completely remodeled our kitchen and laundry room and enclosed part of a porch to make a bar area. Mason Hearn listened to what I wanted to achieve and made it happen. He gave us a cost estimate and that is exactly where it ended up. His time frame was also exactly what he estimated.Mason's guidance and ideas were invaluable. It was a fun, great experience!

**Comment from Mason Hearn:**

> Thank you, Pam, for your kind words. We enjoyed working with you on your kitchen and bath, as well as our ongoing relationship with other small projects around your home!

## Community Q&A

**Q: are those lighted mirrors or medicine cabinets? source? dimensions?** *(in Photo Questions)*

They look taller than standard medicine cabinets.

A: Those are fixed lighted mirrors only, 28x48 "Harmony" by IB Mirror. Wall storage "medicine cabinet" storage is behind the tabour between and flanking the mirrors.

**Q: dimensions please** *(in Photo Questions)*

What are the dimensions of this porch? Thanks

A: gigandtom, This porch is about 16' deep and 22-23' wide.

**Q: Name of double sink vanity please?** *(in Photo Questions)*

jdonatelli2@verizon.net

A: I believe they were from Signature Hardware. Take a look at the "Gebara" model.

**Q: what brand / model are the wall mounted faucets?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love the simplicity/ lines!

A: Sunny, thank you for your question. These faucets are the Litze line by Brizo (Brizo is the high-end brand by Delta Faucet). The finish is brushed gold. We love them!

**Q: Screening system?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I see the other questions about this attractive porch are unanswered, but I'll try anyway. How is the screening affixed, please? I'm also interested in how the perimeter lights are mounted. Thanks.

A: The screen system is Screen Eze. I like it... very clean and allows easy replacement of damaged panels.

The light strings are actually just laid in place (they may be stapled... not sure) on a small ledge we built around the perimater. Just standard off-the shelf string lights... much like Christmas tree lights.

**Q: Lighting up top** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type of string lights are those?

A: I am not sure. The Homeowner provided and installed those on a little shelf we made for that purpose. I believe they are just simple incandescent string lights, "off the shelf".
