> After living in our house which we built 56 years ago, we renovated our downstairs "play room" and guest suite to provide "live in" quarters for a caregiver.  This involved complete update for the existing bathroom, addition of a full kitchen, and replacing the 1967 lighting with built-in LED ceiling fixtures in the dropped ceiling.  Using 3D Computer Aided Design, Resto-Modern simplified both the planning and execution.  This allowed us to visualize all elements of the design, early on, and minimize delays and changes during the renovation.  We now have a complete, up to date apartment, beautifully finished. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Exterior colors? Siding material? Wood type and stain?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hello, I live in east Hartford CT and looking to make my boring exterior siding more modern. I love the look of this home. All contractors look at me like I'm crazy or charge ridiculous prices when we meet. I even had to build my own horizontal wood fence because it was not common in CT to have. I own a simple 1950 split level home, but all the houses look the same and I hate it. Much insight on the company used or some insight would be great! Thanks

A: You have our sympathy regarding finding anything MCM in CT!  We are a design and home improvement contractor, so we custom designed and built all of the deck rails and trim ourselves.  When we needed a couple panels of horizontal fence, we also had to build it ourselves!  As far as the colors go: The body color is Sherwin Williams Solid Color Stain in "Iron Ore", and the trim is a color I custom mixed to mimic a classic cedar stain.  The closest stain color I think would be Behr Exterior Wood Stain in "Woodbridge".  The siding itself is a regular cedar siding. A: My husband and I Just finished this 1968 MCM contemporary project in
coastal CT.  It was a sad disaster when
we found it - four stories tall leaking water from top to bottom! But we saw
great bones, and impressive architectural flair.  It was a challenging and engaging project
which helped bring our skills into focus, and we are very proud of the finished
house.  Houzz played a big role in
everything from choosing paint schemes to outfitting the details.  We found both products and photos that helped
us find everything from floating vanities to
the sleek stainless steel railings, and Mid-Century light fixtures.  In the end we even bumped into classmates of
the architect who originally built it!  They
loved it too.  It was so nice to connect
what we restored and re-imagined with the person who created the home in the
first place.  Amazing karma!  Now, we’re friends with the new owners who
purchased the house from us, and we continue to follow how it is becoming a
lovely home to its new family!
