She helped me hire good contractors, and she supervised them effectively throughout the job, which took almost a year to complete. One example concerned our screened porch. She had specified steel beams to hold up the roof. The contractor decided, on his own, that the specified beams were "overbuilt" and didn't install them. Ms. Sandler caught that error and forced the contractor to adhere to the specifications. Because of the structure of the house, the elimination of the steel beams could have caused structural instability.
