I can’t decide if black would be a good choice or do I choose ivory/white? A lighter wood? I do do have a black headboard; however, it is changeable and when the bed is made it’s not too noticeable. Any sugeatiomd are apprecisted and welcome. Thank you. A: If they are not on the same wall, and expresso may work. If they will be close to each other, I don't recommend trying to find a match as it will be noticeable that they aren't from the same maker. Lighter wood is not something I would recommend either as it won't work with your existing furniture. Painted finishes are forgiving in coordinating with existing wooden pieces. I hope that helps. Scott **Q: Nightstands - Approach to take when not matching bed/headboard** *(in Home Decorating)* I'm not a fan of matching everything. We current have a dark stained headboard. Looking to get new storage bed from PB (https://www.potterybarn.com/m/products/hudson-storage-bed/?pkey=cwood-beds-headboards&isx=0.0\#opi2959513058) that is similar dark stained (mahogany).Not sure best approach for nightstands. Our headboard (and future bed) is similar to mahogany stain they sell that nightstand in. However, definitely want to avoid getting "same" stain when it won't match exactly.Plus contrast is more interesting.But will it a mistake to go with two pieces that only differ somewhat marginally in tone and style?Should be looking at painted nightstands? Ones not even wood at all?Or do you guys think it could work just being dark stain bed next to medium color stain nightstands. A: My advice is to not have two stained pieces of furniture together that are different colors. As a woodworker, I've learned over the years that natural (unstained) woods of two different colors can sit beside each other, but stained ones cannot. When the eye sees natural wood, it picks up on all the variations of color. Because of the variety of colors, the eye is forgiving with having two different prices next to each other. With stained furniture, it's one colour providing a consistent tone and the eye sees one color. When you have two stained pieces next to each other, it is very obvious that they don't belong together and can look like leftover furniture put into a room. I suggest looking for painted nightstands. I hope that helps. **Q: What wood is this?** *(in Woodworking)* A: The pattern of the grain looks suspicious to me. That is not a constant grain pattern you can get from solid wood. I suspect the doors have been finished with a grain pattern applied to them. You state they are solid wood, so look on the inside and on the end grain to see if the pattern matches. **Q: Wood touch up paint & filler?** *(in Woodworking)* I have two wood projects that are total head scratchers to me, I can't find the materials I'm looking for anywhere! 1\. wood touch up paint that is actually good. those crayons/markers they sell at home depot are terrible! wondering if there is an enamel kit with shades of brown you can mix custom colors? or something similar? I could maybe use my artist oil paints, but they take forever to dry. 2\. need to fill gaps where my cedar ceiling meets the wall (see pic) -- they're leaking air (confirmed by a home energy audit pro). caulk would do the job, but it's white. the clear kind is too shiny. what should I use instead? I'm thinking of painters putty in a matching color. or.....? A: There is a wood filler product that is like play dough. I use it in various colors and kneed them together to get the right tone. About the caulk - from an energy perspective, I understand the need to seal the air gap. What I recommend is calling it and covering the corner with a small cove moulding or a quarter round. There's no caulking that will look good on wood that isn't painted. I hope that helps. Scott **Q: Help with Staining White Poplar!** *(in Woodworking)* Here is the dilemma - we were talked into white poplar doors (which I now realize was a terrible choice knowing we intended to stain them the entire time). We are getting a 'yellow animal-stripe' type appearance over the grain (see second attached picture). We have had success with pre-stain first (eliminates the yellow), but the stain is still showing up quite splotchy (top picture, splotchy in bottom two corners). So, we clearly are able to eliminate the yellow, but I'm not OK with the splotchiness! Thoughts on what to try next? Ideas? A: What you can do is apply a coat of shellac first to seal the wood. Then you can apply a gel stain which won't soak into the wood and cause an uneven grain pattern. Test it on a sample first as the look will show less grain pattern. Good luck. Scott **Q: wood balusters on knee eall without shoe rail** *(in Woodworking)* We are replacing the wood balusters on our stairs that has a knee wall and a shoe rail/fillet installation. We are replacing with square wood balusters on the knee wall but don't want to use a shoe rail. Instead, we want to just mount the balusters into the knee wall cap. What is the best technique to make this secure? A: The reason a shoerail is used is because it secures the balusters with a strong joint between the balusters and the wall.
