New Leaf Home Design, LLC specializes in architectural design of residential additions and renovations, as well as right-sized new homes that create as much energy as they use. Our philosophy is that the quality of design and materials in a house are ultimately more enjoyable than lots of square footage: the “Not So Big House”\* idea. We strive to use your home’s existing spaces as well as possible, and add just enough new area to accomplish your goals.

Green design is also central to the New Leaf philosophy. A home designed for energy efficiency will save you money on heating and cooling costs, and be more comfortable to live in too! Many opportunities for better construction are missed not because of extra costs, but because people are not informed of the choices they have to improve the performance of their home. New Leaf gives you those choices!

> Hallie Bowie did a fantastic job designing our zero energy ready home. She listened to us carefully about what we wanted in our house and her design exceeded our expectations. Her knowledge and attention to detail not only about the architecture of the house but also what was needed to make it zero energy ready made the entire process seamless. The other element that we wanted in our house was design for “living in place” as we age. Hallie was also knowledgeable about this aspect of house design and had many good suggestions. We get many compliments about how the house perfectly “fits” our wooded lot and how the windows, views and light are wonderful. We owe this to Hallie and would highly recommend her to anyone considering a renovation or building a new house.

> Supremely professional with a great team. Would recommend! We used New Leaf to assist in designing an addition to an outbuilding in our soon-to-be century home. We were working with a unique property and needed specific code variances. New Leaf helped us work with the city, attended the Zoning Variance meeting, and we were able to move forward with their great design.

> Hallie is an absolute professional and skilled listener. She has worked with us on and off for a couple of years, always with extraordinary patience, returning ideas that are creative as well as practical.

**★★★★★ — Barbara, Nov. 2025**

> Hallie’s expertise was invaluable. She gave impeccable advice on all aspects of our home remodeling - from placement of appliances, ideal size of furniture, to traffic flow. Her greatest contribution was convincing us to retain the front stone entry…her solution resulted in a savings of $10000, maintained the integrity of the home, and provided stunning results.

**★★★★★ — trooperhat, Aug. 2025**

> I consulted Hallie for advice on a current home build. She is extremely knowledgeable and was willing to take the time to address my concerns. Caring, compassionate and competent.
> Highly recommended.

**★★★★★ — Mike Burns, April 2025**

> A few years ago Hallie designed a bedroom, bathroom, closet addition for my 1950's ranch and also redesigned the kitchen to take down a wall, create an island, and open the kitchen up to the living area. The addition also included moving the laundry room upstairs. I had the kitchen work done a few years ago and waited to do the addition. That work was completed last fall and I couldn't be happier. From both the inside and outside it looks like the addition has always been part of the house, not like someone stuck a room on the back of it. While it took a few years to get everything done (having nothing to do with Hallie) I'm glad I worked with an expert for the design since I plan to be here for the long term.

> We used New Leaf Home Design to renovate our kitchen, back hall and make a screened porch into a four season room. Hallie helped us reconfigure our kitchen and back hall making it into a larger entry with a bench area with hooks and closet. She designed a stone exterior and determined window placement so it would accent and coordinate with the look of the existing exterior of our home.
> Hallie is very easy to work with. Her insights and knowledge are invaluable. She can design to help people “age in place” and she is knowledgeable of energy saving construction. We highly recommend New Leaf Home Design!

**★★★★★ — Ann Welby, Jan. 2023**

> Hallie was an easy person to collaborate with while designing my age-in-place, zero-steps, energy efficient home. Her ideas and suggestions were valuable in arranging for flexible spaces connected to the greater outdoors. Because I live in a frequently cloudy location, it is important for me to avail myself of available natural light. Hallie tracked the path of the sun throughout the seasons then strategically situated windows to maximize natural light throughout the day and through the seasons. My home is airy and light filled with a robust connection to the surrounding environment.
>
> Hallie has extensive technical knowledge of green building, including prioritizing excellent interior air quality, efficient heating and cooling systems, and suitable insulation types and applications. Besides being energy efficient, she designed my new home to be solar-ready.
>
> My home, which will soon be completed, has to satisfy many roles. It will serve me as an age-in-place home that is also accessible for a frequent visitor who has significant physical disabilities. The extra wide doorways, halls, and roll-in shower are equipped to accommodate a wheel chair user. Furthermore, by locking two doors, my home will provide me with some retirement income as a two bedroom, one bath rental with its own entrance. This is a lot to achieve from a single-family, three-bedroom home, and with Hallie’s guidance and design knowledge it has been effectively accomplished.
>
> Additionally, Hallie paid attention to the livability of my home with strategically placed widows to watch the sunrise, and a much desired highly functional and beautiful kitchen, with an attached porch. In my garage she included a large south-facing window design for starting seeds as well as a much-needed dog wash. It is her excellent listening skills and her being attuned to my lifestyle that will make my new home comfortable throughout the year, and a joyful space for my visitors and myself. Working with Hallie has been a positive collaborative experience that resulted in a multifunctional, energy efficient, and decidedly livable home.

**Comment from New Leaf Home Design:**

> Hallie at New Leaf Home Design created a beautiful new floor plan for our Sarasota condo renovation. Not only did she listen intently to our desires and concerns, she came up with innovative ideas we hadn’t even though of. Hallie is the ultimate professional. We recommend New Leaf to everyone we know who’s considering a renovation project.

> My husband and I wanted to add a sunroom, garage, and deck onto our home; we had the vision but we needed an architectural expert to help us coalesce our ideas . Hallie Bowie provided us with brainstorming ideas, valuable suggestions, and importantly, expert architectural drawings that made our vision a reality.
>
> Currently, we are in the construction phase of the renovation and it has been wonderful to actually see the extra space in the additional garage, the expansive view from the sunroom out to our backyard, and to utilize an expansive new deck.
>
> Importantly, Hallie Bowie was always available to answer any questions that we had during the construction process.
>
> We would highly recommend using the architectural expertise of Hallie Bowie, New Leaf Home Design.

**★★★★★ — Shani Diggs, April 2021**

> Hallie was fantastic to design and bring my vision to life. She was timely, available for joint zoom calls and very thorough during in-person visits. I appreciated her expertise and was very pleased with her design plans as well as the length of time during my project. A true professional!

**★★★★★ — Shelley Frew, April 2021**

> Hallie was wonderful to work with and we love our new front porch! She was very responsive and took her plan to the city meeting to answer their questions and to make sure we received approval.

**★★★★★ — Katie McCarthy, March 2020**

> New Leaf Home Design was exactly what we were seeking in an architect to design an addition to our home. We were looking for someone fairly local with expertise in green design techniques. We had an initial meeting and then several follow-ups to get the design just right. Hallie was able to take all of the most wanted parts of the project and turn them into a beautiful, efficient and energy-conscience design, which we love. The fees charged by New Leaf were in line with other architects that we looked into who were not as knowledgeable about the areas of green building that we hoped to include in our project. Hallie was also able to connect us with builders that are familiar with the materials she recommended and specialists to help our project be as efficient as possible when finished. We are quite pleased with the outcome and feel certain that New Leaf Home Design was the best choice for our project, which finished ahead of schedule!

**Comment from New Leaf Home Design:**

> Thank you Katie! It was a pleasure working with you!

**★★★★★ — Scott McCallen, Oct. 2019**

> Hallie Bowie was the architect for the new home we built in 2018 and we are extremely happy with the results. We started working with Hallie in August of 2017 and found what we had been missing during the planning process: an architect that is 1) detailed and thorough, 2) acted on our feedback, and 3) designed a house we could afford to build! First, Hallie is meticulous in her planning and execution. During the first few conversations, she had generated pages and pages of notes that captured all the details of our needs and wants for the house. She translated all of those into the architecture program (a formal document of our needs and wants). That attention to detail was a huge benefit as Hallie started designing the floor plan and layout because we all referred back to the list to help us decide what was most important. Second, as the design and layout progressed, Hallie was very open to feedback. We discussed what we liked or didn’t like about the floor plan, explored options that weren’t apparent until going through the design, and really dug into the details of how we would live in the house. Walls were moved, rooms were rearranged, and the final floor plan was exactly what we wanted. Third, Hallie was able to design a plan that we could afford to build. It is very easy for architect and client alike to add more square feet to the house at every turn during the design phase. But no budget is unlimited and we weren’t interested in building a mansion anyways. This is where Hallie really shined. She was able to design a home with the form, fit, finish, and features we wanted and maintained a close eye on how this would affect our budget. Her ability to fit the pieces together and use space wisely was impressive and much appreciated.
>
> Overall we very happy to have had the opportunity to work with Hallie. Not only did she design a beautiful house for us, but she is also great to work with. We definitely recommend Hallie for anyone looking to design a custom home!

**★★★★★ — Lynne Stamm, Oct. 2018**

> I approached Hallie Bowie of New Leaf Home Design with an idea to remodel my beautiful 1930 home to solve the problems of an inadequately small garage and no mudroom.
> Hallie produced concept drawings based upon my idea. These drawings convinced me that though my idea was feasible it only marginally corrected the problems that I was trying to solve.
> With her architectural expertise Hallie then presented me with two alternate remodeling approaches. Both of these solved the deficiencies of my home and were real improvements to my original idea.
> Hallie listened to my goals and my concern of retaining the integrity of my home. Her architectural expertise took my concept and improved upon it to achieve a better result. That’s why you hire a professional!!

**★★★★★ — Ted and Cheryl Barr, May 2018**

> My husband and I engaged Hallie Bowie of New Leaf Home Design to assist with the architectural designs for a renovation of our home in Brecksville. As we began the process we did not have a definitive plan for our home. Hallie listened to our thoughts, asked helpful questions in regard to our family and how we saw ourselves using our home in the future as empty nesters. She gave us wise, thoughtful input that assisted us in coming up with a design for our home that met our day to day living needs, and also created new and inviting space for entertaining. Hallie met with us in person, communicated frequently, and finished our plans in a timely fashion so we could proceed with our project. We highly recommend Hallie Bowie for your home design needs!

> We were very pleased with the work Hallie with New Leaf Home Design did to design my parents' new home in 2015. She was responsive and worked hard to accommodate all our priorities. The house is a great energy-saving home for them to age in place and well worth the money spent.

**★★★★★ — Adam Gardin, May 2017**

> Hallie undertook our challenging vision for a complete home renovation and delivered a creative solution, providing several options to meet our budget. Throughout the process she was punctual and professional, and went out of her way to include creative flourishes throughout the design. We highly recommend her services.

**★★★★★ — jglenn, Feb. 2017**

> Hallie is great to work with. She is thoughtful, knowledgeable, and creative, She worked tirelessly through many iterations with us to help us design our home. She worked great with our builder to advocate for us and really helped us come up with a home design that worked for how we live. I'd highly recommend talking to Hallie if you are in need of an architect.

**★★★★★ — Thomas Plunkett, Dec. 2016**

> Halle was the right choice for the design of our new home. Her willingness to listen to our grand ideas and then massage them with technical details and code compliance made all the difference.
>
> From the ground up, her architectural skills made our new home.
>
> We love it!

**★★★★★ — Marie Lepley, April 2015**

> We love the home we live in designed by New Leaf Design. Every inch of the home is perfect from the traffic flow decisions they prioritized to the distinct transformation while maintaining the style of the 1950s Cape Code family home. She weaved the memories of our grandmother's home seamlessly with desires for modern touches. She prioritized with us maintaining lots of natural light, a feeling of being in a cabin in the middle of a town and grandeur of vaulted ceilings while still having cozy rooms. She helped us get everything we wanted without breaking the bank. We would absolutely recommend New Leaf Design.

**★★★★★ — gmawyer, Feb. 2015**

> Hallie designed a remodel for our sixty year old ranch home in 2009. She was very professional and we were, and more importantly still are, thrilled with the results. Hallie was very sensitive to our wants and delivered her designs on time and for the agreed upon fee. She also provided timely follow up support with us and the building contractor when questions arose or changes (small) became necessary. We still contact her periodically with questions unrelated to our original project and she is happy to give her advice. She and New Leaf Home Design were a joy to work with and we recommend them highly.

**★★★★★ — ablechman, Feb. 2015**

> We used New Leaf Home Design to design a portico for our 1952 home. The home had no curb appeal and we wanted a covered porch of some kind. Hallie was great about listening to what we wanted and what would work with our home. The portico needed to "float"; there was no room for support columns on our current porch. Also, the front door is not centered on our home and we were concerned that a portico might accentuate that. Hallie designed a beautiful, rounded, vaulted portico that gave us a very light, air feel. She moved the front door just a few inches to help visually offset the fact that the door is not centered. She was very easy to work with and listened to our ideas as well as sharing her own. We would love to work with her again.

**★★★★★ — delbert59, April 2013**

> I hired New Leaf Home Design for a complete remodle of my condo. The condo was gutted, walls and plumbing moved, Kitchen and two bathrooms completely changed. Hallie was very professional, efficient and gave very clear instructions tot he contractors through her drawings. The outcome was more than I could have hoped for and I love my new updated home.

**★★★★ — kristindaneshgari, Oct. 2012**

> Hallie is the architect for a remodel of our home. The project is a large one, requiring many changes, both large and small. She has been easy to work with, always willing to rearrange things as our desires changed. She's offered great suggestions for solutions and resources, and she is affordable.
> A real pleasure!

  - Description: These homeowners originally hoped to purchase an existing home in this neighborhood filled with classic Shaker Heights homes. Their goals for layout and energy efficiency ultimately led them to start from scratch, but they wanted to keep the traditional feel they loved. We included barn doors to separate the Away Room from the main Living Room, provided an open layout to the chef's kitchen, and a tin ceiling over the butcher block island.

  - Description: This project is located in Hudson's historic district, so complimenting the existing house was especially important. We replaced the original sunroom with a new two story addition. This created space for a Master Bathroom with a cathedral ceiling, both a Japanese soaking tub and a freestanding traditional tub, and a steam shower. The new Sunroom still has great views of the garden with lots of windows. We also renovated the third floor from an unfinished attic to a bedroom retreat. The dormers o…

Now the Living Room and Dining/Family Room work together to for easy entertaining and family togetherness every day.

  - Location: Akron, OH

  - Description: This condominium, built in 1959 in the Highland Square area was in need of a remodel. The building had great mid-century modern bones, but this unit needed a fresh start! The owner wanted to open the kitchen area up to the living area, which required removing a wall. Vibrant colors and modern light fixtures bring the space up to date. A serving area next to the dining room includes a wine cooler and display cabinets for glassware and art.
- [Tudor Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tudor-addition-pj-vj~48265)
  - Location: Akron, OH
  - Photos: 2
  - Description: Matching the slate roofing, board and batten stucco walls, and 16/12 roof pitch were key in making this addition over a flat roofed garage worthy of the original Tudor house. A bay window with transoms and a copper roof provides views of the back yard garden, and the dormer greets you as you pull into the garage.

  - Location: Akron, OH

- [Tudor Garage Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tudor-garage-addition-pj-vj~48267)
  - Location: Akron, OH
  - Photos: 2
  - Description: This beautiful Tudor home needed a family room, and the original garage was in just the right place off the Kitchen. So we converted the old garage to the new family room and connected the new garage with a breezeway supported by timber columns with knee braces to match the ones on the original screened porch. The roof pitch, gable windows, and stone base tie the design of the addition to the original house.
- [Classical Porch](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/classical-porch-pj-vj~91246)
  - Location: Hudson, OH

- [Breakfast & Family Room Additon](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/breakfast-and-family-room-additon-pj-vj~39997)
  - Location: Akron, OH
  - Photos: 2
  - Description: This kitchen in this center hall colonial house was small and dark. We added a breakfast area that is open to the kitchen, separated only by a sweeping arch above. Plenty of windows let natural light deep into the house. The family room is visually connected as well, and long sight lines make the house feel even bigger.
- [Expanding the Kitchen inside the house](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/expanding-the-kitchen-inside-the-house-pj-vj~48238)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 1
  - Description: The original Kitchen of this house had a narrow galley plan, and also served as the daily entry into the house. We borrowed space from closets in an adjacent room to give it extra width without adding on. The cabinets, tile, and simple bracket supporting a shallow soffit maintain the Craftsman feel, wihile pendant lights, more windows, and granite counters bring it up to date.
- [Cuyahoga Falls Cape Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/cuyahoga-falls-cape-addition-pj-vj~48241)
  - Location: Cuyahoga Falls, OH
  - Photos: 1
  - Description: This addition doubled the size of the original Cape Cod style house. The exterior includes subtle details like fishscale siding in the gable. An old fashioned cellar door provides access to the new basement storage area without taking up valuable floor space (the original house is built on a slab). Careful proportions maintain the charm of this cozy house without overwhelming it. A new gable porch over the front door looks like it was always there.
- [Ohio Library Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/ohio-library-addition-pj-vj~48262)
  - Location: Cuyahoga Falls, OH

  - Description: This addition to a small town center hall colonial provides lots of space for the owners extensive collection of books, while providing an additional bedroom on the second floor. The front facing bay window brings in plenty of light, while the high transom windows on the side leave room for book cases below and give privacy from the neighbors' house.

**What types of projects do you specialize in (custom homes, remodels, additions)?**
We specialize in a wide range of residential projects, including custom new homes, home additions, and comprehensive renovations. **Do you design fully custom homes?**
Absolutely! Designing fully custom homes tailored to your unique needs and lifestyle is a core part of what we do. We focus on creating homes that are energy-efficient, maximize natural light, and are designed specifically for you and your family.

**Can you work with the builder I select, or do you recommend specific builders?**
Yes, we are happy to work collaboratively with the builder you select. Our process includes being available for questions from your contractor during construction. While we don't recommend specific builders, we ensure a smooth working relationship.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Counter Width** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the width of the breakfast bar? How wide is the counter and how wide is the breakfast bar?

Are the cabinets below custom or stock?

A: Rachel, sorry I didn't see your question earlier! The breakfast bar is about 17" wide- enough to go over the wall supporting it plus a 12" overhang. The counter on the other side is a standard 25", over 24" base cabinets. If I recall correctly, the cabinets are semi-custom.

**Q: What is the square footage of this addition?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The first and second floor combine to create about 800 square feet of new living space.
