Are your rooms in a rut? Let Michele Bobb help you create just the right look with color and design advice that will make your home a warm, inviting space. Design to live or stage to sell - Room Therapy has the answers to all your decorating dilemmas.

Whether you are just starting out, refreshing your space or ready to move to your next home, your home’s personality can shine through with a little creativity and encouragement. Many clients often sell themselves short. They actually have a great sense of what they like, but lack the confidence to make the decisions to pull it all together.

About Michele:
My love of interior design dates back to junior high when I spent hours poring over my mother’s latest issues of House Beautiful magazine. My idea of a fun outing was to take the bus with my best friend from New Jersey into New York City to see the wonderful furniture displays at W.J. Sloane on Fifth Avenue. Today, I have to smile when I think of the sales staff wondering what to make of two twelve-year old girls spending their time visiting each floor of their flagship store.

In 2002, Room Therapy was born. The concept of redesign was just taking hold and I loved the ideas of sharing my passion and helping others find happiness in their homes using what they already owned.

The first step in the process was to polish my skills at a professional workshop taught by industry leader, Joanne Lenart-Weary. Her 5-day training workshop in Erie, Pennsylvania, gave me the confidence to start my company. Since then I have participated in other workshops including a six-day color workshop given by Joanne Day of the Day Studio in Oakland, California, in 2009, and a three-day workshop focusing on the undertones of colors given by Maria Killam in Toronto, Canada, in 2012.

Because of the ever changing nature of the design world, I participate in workshops, attend seminars at The Washington Design Center and new product introductions by Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore and Hunter Douglas, whenever I can.
As a member of the Interior Redesign and Staging Association, I continue to collaborate with other local designers each month as we explore new resources and participate in non-profit projects with local charities including Habitat for Humanity.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Master Bath HELP!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Ok.. Mid renovation on our master bathroom. Today was granite install day. Was hoping it would make all the colors come together but think it clashes with everything. Attached pics of granite as shower saddles and bench as well as on countertops. I think we need to change it to something solid- maybe quartz? It's going to cost us thousands - that we don't have right now!! But what else can I do :(

A: Take a deep breath.. Agreed you have a lot going on, but I would let the whole project come together before making any decisions. You're in the middle of it now- but once your light fixtures, mirrors, faucets, etc are installed and the painting is done, you'll know better if anything needs to change. You might find that it all comes together perfectly or you can live with it for awhile.

**Q: I need advice on window treatments for my new home!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am trying to decide on what window treatments I should do for a new home. It is a craftsman style home, with a beautiful view in the backyard. I am thinking about doing plantation shutters in the front of the house, but I'd like to do blinds in the back windows of the house, so that I could pull them up all the way, to enjoy my view. Is it "legal" to mix window coverings? Any suggestions?

A: There's nothing wrong with mixing window treatments, particularly on different sides of the house. The shutter louvers and the blind slats have a similar horizontal appearance and coordinate well. I love shutters, but I do like to mention to clients that the frames can block a lot of light, particularly if you have a porch across the front of the house. One of the benefits of blinds is that you can control the amount of light and the view by opening the slats, but because there is a stack issue when they're raised up, you actually can never get an unobstructed view by raising up blinds. A larger slat (2 1/2 inch) will give you more view through. Pictures would be helpful...there may be some other products worth considering. Lots of luck in your new home!

**Q: Master Bedroom Needs a Cure for the Blahs!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My 12'X15' master bedroom has been neglected and needs a transformation. Since there is an adjoining loft for reading and watching TV, the bedroom is for sleeping only (and doing, well, what lovers do). I want to get rid of the vertical blinds, but the verticals and the built in blinds in the two windows are great for controlling light while keeping the dust down for my husband who has allergies. I do like it dark for sleeping and, to be honest, I rarely open the blinds on the windows. I want to change the paint color to something lighter that will go well with with the pictures. The rest of my house has lots of wood (post and beam) which reminds me of midcentury modern. We like a minimalistic look. Please help me with suggestions which will help me transform this plain jane room to a more inviting one. Attached are views of the room's four walls. Thanks.

A: If you're planning to purchase new linens that should be your first step...they will be the inspiration, along with your art, for your color scheme. There are hundreds of paint colors, so it will be easier to match paint to linens, etc. than the other way around.

**Q: Bathroom Design Mistake....** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Building a house, and now that the granite and tile are up, they don't match. I am heartbroken. Is there anyway to salvage? The granite is santa Cecilia and has more golds/browns than thought. The tile is a maroon norte. It looked more brownish when I picked, but now it looks red! What can I do to bring all of the colors together? I don't have money to replace either right now. Kitchen photo shows better what the granite looks like and other photos are of the guest and master bath tile. You can see the granite in one of the photos...

A: I would try a color like Benjamin Moore Grant Beige..a beige with a green undertone that could pick up one of the shades in the stone listello border. Try to avoid using anything with a pinkish undertone which would fight the granite or a yellow undertone that would fight the tile. Paint is a great way to tie all the elements together.
