Not sure if baton and board style or picture frame. Then I came across someone saying that it shouldn't be put in bathroom??? Anyone hear this? And is lowes an ok place to get this?? A: You can put a wood wainscot in a bathroom, but just be certain to properly seal all six sides of the materials with a high quality primer and paint. I would tend to stay away from the pressboard panel stuff as it will not wear well over time. Another option is to do tile as a wainscot and add a nice cap rail. Good luck Good Luck **Q: Bland entry needs a spark!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just finished an update of our entryway, which included new paint, baseboards, and a new front door. Although I love the bones of the space, it just doesn’t quite feel done yet and I don’t know why. I used my favorite colors and put some of my favorite pieces in here, but it just feels blah, like it just need something else. Am I being too critical or am I right & it’s boring? (Before someone suggests it, repainting isn’t an option because one, I really like the paint color and two, the wall goes all the way up to the top of the stairs & would require scaffolding.) Also, I don’t know how to hang artwork in the space. I know those 2 pieces are too small but what would work? The entryway is two steps down from the landing to the stairs, which head up to our 2nd floor living room that has vaulted ceilings. I previously had a gallery wall of black framed art going up the stairs, but it seemed too busy. It’s a huge wall with 3 different levels (entry, landing at the bottom of the stairs & landing halfway up the stairs). Suggestions are appreciated! A: The space appears too filled with "hard items" and could use some softening. Rugs as mentioned by others are a good idea, including a runner down the lower hall. You need some fabrics/soft goods like a couple of chairs, small settee or an upholstered bench. The dresser looks to rough hewn so you might find a more tailored "half table" or demi-lune table and I'd suggest a mirror instead of the artwork. Good Luck. **Q: Bernhardt, Ashley, Mayo, Jonathan-Louis sofa and chair?** *(in Furniture)* I feel like I have sat in 1000 sofa and chairs recently. I am looking for a rather traditional couch, with comfy and durable fabric. Depending on the day I am leaning toward any one of these companies. I don't want to break the bank but don't want to risk a cheap sofa that breaks or shows serious ware in a year. Seems like Ashley is getting not great reviews overall. Anyone familiar with any of these companies? A: Strangely I recently bought a couch from ethan allen and it has been a very good purchase. I had the cushion upgraded and it is a very nice couch. I really wanted the avery-boardman, but like you didn't want to drop $9-12k on the couch. I'd avoid ashley at all costs. **Q: Master bathroom whirlpool tub** *(in Building a Home)* New construction. Foundation has not been poured yet. The master bath will have a whirlpool bathtub. It will be a drop in. Rather than have a step to get into the tub, I saw a picture online where a spot was made in the foundation so the tub could be lower. My builder says he can do it, but I can't find many pictures other than the one I have attached. Is this a good idea/bad idea? A: I would avoid a "sunken " tub as they are a challenge to get in and out of safely. Also I'd keep an eye on where your tub is being placed...if this photo is in a cold climate those winter baths will most chilling with the glass at the tub. This is a photo of one of my favorite tub treatments (though getting in and out is still a bit tricky) and while it can be adapted to your own style it really jazzes up the look of a tub. **Q: Help - barn door installation questions** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are installing a interior barn door between the kitchen and the family room We have a couple considerations. The door will hang on the family room side of the opening . 1\) There is a 6" step down into the family room and a change in flooring. Should the door extend to the floor of the family room, or stop at the kitchen floor level. There is a 1-1/4" stair nose proud of the wall. 2\) How much gap/offset is created between the door and the drywall when the door is closed? I assume that has to do with the hardware we choose but not sure how to determine that distance. Thanks! A: Barn doors really create a set of potentially difficult issues and I would suggest you reconsider the need for a barn door or a door at all. Maybe a simple cased opening would be enough to kill the blandness of the drywall opening. Regarding the difficulties, you do need to run the door to the floor or it will be hanging in the air when open (which is likely most of the time) and look kind of dumb. That does require firing out he hardware which now puts you out of plane with wall and a door that is 2" off the wall doing nothing for sound/privacy. Also you will need a soft/automatic closing hardware set or you will need to build a stop on the wall and that will also be awkward. You might consider another option. **Q: Bad tile job bathroom remodel help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Help! Our contractor told us we are crazy and being too picky but this is not was I expected our expensive bathroom remodel to look like. Grout lines are uneven and messy. Tile is chipped throughout the wall and sticks out everywhere. A: Ms. Wheeler makes an accurate comment about the out of pocket costs, HOWEVER, the sloppy work (and especially the poor grout work) suggests that water will get behind the tile. I would not want to rely that the waterproofing is any more sound than the tile work. Also, there is also a potential safety issue, especially if the floor is tiled as badly, that tile is sharp and will cut skin. No reason to re-enact a horror movie while showering!
