> Matthew is a real craftsman at everything he does.  he is a skilled carpenter but also kows how to do everything else although he typically uses subs and generals the jobs.   He has worked on my historica Victorian on several projects, repairing and crafting moldings to replace worn details on the outside, major updates to a bathroom including reinforcement of the floor joists, custom cabinetry, and installation of travertine and marble (contractors used for that), as well as restoration of a flooded basement room on two occasions.  He is also a good communicator who keeps me apprised of his status on the job.

> Matthew Amann was on site everyday supervising subs and doing work himself, including long days and weekends. He is meticulously detail oriented, thoughtful in problem solving, and was amazingly patient through my laborious process of decision making. He has many talents, his favorite of which is probably woodworking, but he can do it all.  His subs were all good - great, but he has set a high bar - to the benefit of the homeowner.

> Matthew Amann contracts new construction and remodels as Natur Haus, Progressive Building. He built a four-bay garage and storage building for me In 2012. From excavation to applying the final coat of paint he either supervised subs or did the work himself.  Matthew's major concern is making sure every aspect of the job is done at the highest level of quality and durability. He cuts no corners, will not work with inferior materials, hires highly qualified sub contractors and supervises very closely. The result was a very solid and attractive building that included both plumbing and electric, an excellent gutter and drainage system, a total of two exterior doors, four interior and two double metal automatic garage doors, several windows, two woodsheds, three storage areas and one workshop.  Everything from pouring the slab,to  framing, to sheet rocking, to roofing, siding, hardware installation and painting was flawless. I found Matthew open to hearing my questions, suggestions and change orders respectfully. When we had differences they were worked out amicably.   I have hired scores of builders and contractors in all the building trades for the last forty years.  Matthew is one of the most thorough and skilled. He is a student of his craft and a wealth of knowledge about building practices, safe and reliable products, latest innovations while also having a keen aesthetic sense. On this project I found his price reasonable, his pace slower than promised, but I would say that about all general contractors, The factor that sticks out most three years later, is that the appearance of the building and its custom-cut cedar shakes as if they were hung yesterday.  There were very few call backs necessary, all minor and easily remedied.  He has visited the site a few times since completion to look the garage over and make sure it is standing up to his standards.  That is impressive to me and appreciated. I hired him two years later to do some interior carpentry, masonry, plumbing and fancy woodworking in my home.  Excellent workmanship, again.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Backsplash ideas also hardware suggestions for a transitional look.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

New quartzite counters cabinets painted new sink faucet. Need backsplash ideas I want to keep it light.

A: Marble mosaic arrow or herringbone would be good choices as well

**Q: Kitchen Renovation** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We need to renovate our kitchen, which has Mexican Saltillo tile floors that would be difficult and expensive to tear out and replace. The floors also run throughout our one story 2200 square foot fairly contemporary home that has an open flowing feel and has lots of skylights and sliding glass doors.  Kitchen is about 10'\*21" wiht cooking area at one end and eating area by large floor to ceiling window and  sliding glass doors to large deck.  Ceiling over cooking area is 15' with large skylight, and large window above counters by refrig.  Want a modern, fresh, creative architectural renovation using interesting, perhaps unexpected materials - steel, rubber, etc.  Prefer creative, unexpected, inspired interiors to just throwing a lot of money at something.  What materials/colors/appliances/cabinetry, etc should I use?  Layout?  Please redesign kitchen for me!  We love travel, art, wine, books, music, antiques, and the rest of our home reflects this - a lot of Asian influences, esp Burmese, Thai, and japanese - in the rest of our home as well.  Thank you!

A: Keep the saltillos, the southwest look can combine beautifully with Japanese to create a modern aesthetic.  the key is to use natural materials, which saltillos are, and use few, letting them speak.  Do not over complicate the design, clean douglas fir, or painted cabinets, and off white walls.  Keep it simple.
