An award-winning Los Angeles Interior Designer, Anna specializes in creating elegant interiors that are both refined and comfortable for clients ranging from young families just starting out to high-end professionals and celebrities. With over 20 years of experience, Anna is one of the most prominent interior designers and art consultants in the South Bay, and is the only designer in the area who has been named one of “America’s Top Young Designers” by House Beautiful magazine. She is known for designing rooms that strike a fine balance of polished yet approachable, appear to have been collected over time, and consider the smallest details without feeling overly decorated.

Her client’s testimonials highlight Anna’s expertise in addressing their concerns and wish-lists while making the challenging process of renovating and decorating far less stressful. She believes that a friendly attitude and ability to relate to her clients provides an enjoyable experience in an otherwise intimidating field. She assists clients in navigating every step of the often overwhelming process, from selecting the best colors, materials, and furnishings, to budgeting and scheduling, to communicating with contractors and architects. Taking her design direction from a client’s personal taste and the intrinsic architecture of each space, Anna equally enjoys working in both traditional and contemporary settings.

Anna launched her career in New York with Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani where she assisted in the design of retail stores in America, Europe and Asia. She then worked with industry veteran Kramer Design Group where she managed the design of major flagship stores and smaller boutiques worldwide for clients Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Narcisco Rodriquez, Isaac Mizrahi, and Barneys New York. Upon moving back to Los Angeles, she switched from commercial to residential design working with legendary celebrity decorator Michael S. Smith where she managed high-end residential projects across the country. (Smith was since hired by President Obama to design at the White House). She has had a private design business since 2003.

Anna has been featured in Elle Décor, W, C, In Style, House Beautiful, California Home + Design, Los Angeles Confidential, Rue, South Bay, Martha Stewart, The Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal. One Kings Lane and The Highboy feature her original vintage art collection, and she is a guest curator for Artfully Walls.

**★★★★★ — HU-207528802, Jan. 2022**

> Anna Hackathorn is the person you call for help with anything interior design. She helped us in 2012 and again 2019-2021. We remodeled our kitchen in our current home. She helped with all things from paint color, stone work, wood work, and finishes including design. She has a great sense of style and respects all elements involved. One learns so much just by listening to her speak! She is highly educated and experienced in her field. We can't speak highly enough!

**★★★★★ — Thomas Towne Reavey, Inc., Oct. 2018**

> Anna was the Designer for a project in which I was the General Contractor. It was pure pleasure to work with such a professional. She is well versed with the construction process and made it much smoother by making wise and prompt decisions and selections. She's thoughtful, very collaborative and has a great eye for design, color, harmony, detail and scale. I have and will continue to recommend her at every opportunity.

**★★★★★ — Jenny Hansen, Sept. 2018**

> My husband and I worked with Anna to help us with the design of our home remodel. She helped us with many of the design decisions within our home, including flooring, countertops, paint, wallpaper, lighting, window treatments, and furniture. She listened to our preferences in style esthetic and helped narrow down the millions of options out there to a select few in order to simplify the decisions we had to make. It was so helpful to have someone do the legwork for us as we both have very busy work schedules that would have precluded us from doing the necessary research to put together a great style esthetic for our home.
>
> We enjoyed working with Anna for a number of reasons but I would say the most important are - she truly listened to our needs and she worked well with our contractor. She is still a great resource for us when we have questions. We highly recommend Anna!

> I have been looking for someone to advise on art placement with existing paintings and high value art (along with low value art), sentimental items and other suggestions on our home. We also have walnut paneled walls so I wanted to avoid excessive nail holes. I have hired designers but either they have worked with new pieces from one line or they are in one type of box and not what Im looking for with fine art. Anna was superb. She had ideas and solutions that I can't believe she was able to tackle so efficiently and thoughtfully. Her work is amazing. I will definitely be seeking her advise again! Hands down, a great experience! Its nice to work with someone who doesn't just have vested interests (aka: only offering solutions on what they can sell me)

**Comment from Anna Hackathorn Interior Design:**

> It was so nice to work with you and I'm glad you felt it was a great experience. Thanks for the review!

**★★★★★ — Pritzkat & Johnson Architects, March 2018**

> When Anna is part of the design team, we know the end result will look amazing. She understands the realities of the construction process while coming up with creative solutions. She is resourceful with matching the trades and vendors to get the best results within the given budget and not afraid to think outside the box. She has a very artistic eye that any potential client would benefit from and really helps my projects, as an Architect, stand out.

**Comment from Anna Hackathorn Interior Design:**

> Thank you! I look forward to future projects with you.

**★★★★★ — Court Designs, June 2017**

> I highly recommend Anna as an Interior designer as well as a curator for fine art.
> Anna has a design sensibility that brings comfort, function and form to ones home whether it is a complete remodel or simply freshening up a room with new window treatments, fresh layout of furnishings and art.
> Anna also brings an organization to a project that makes ones goals easily achievable.

**★★★★★ — jlane259, April 2017**

> I hired Anna to help finish the downstairs living areas in our home. I had a previous decorator who initially got things set up when we first remodeled, but I wanted a fresh eye to look at our space and guide us. I am on the east coast, and I sent her pictures of all my rooms along with the floor plan. She guided me through everything she felt would finish off the space (I took 4 pages of notes), and she picked some gorgeous rugs, one of which we purchased and absolutely love! I'm following her guidance on the curtains, and we will have her select a large piece of art as well as fabric to recover our barstools. I can't recommend Anna highly enough! She is so very talented, and you can use her for as little or as much as you need. My space feels so beautiful and layered now thanks to her incredible ability.

**Comment from Anna Hackathorn Interior Design:**

> Thank you! I'm so happy that you are happy with the outcome. Keep me posted!

**★★★★★ — Kamalii Home, Dec. 2016**

> I didn't think I needed an interior designer's help with my kitchen renovations, but now I couldn't imagine doing it without the help of Anna. She worked with me on my vision, sourced the materials and brought it all together. Very professional with vendors and easy to work with. She made me feel comfortable and has a great eye for design. Would recommend her to anyone!

> Anna is a very knowledgeable and professional in what she does. She takes her time in order to make sure you, as a client, get the best possible outcome on what's expecting and beyond. It's always a pleasure to be involved in a project when she's around!!!

**Comment from Anna Hackathorn Interior Design:**

> thank you! it's always a pleasure to work with you and your company!

> Anna was my designer for my bathroom and backyard renovation. What I found to be Anna's real gift was that she listened to me and effortlessly came up with a solution/idea that took into account everything I had said. Her approach was at my level, meaning financially, the language she used and the scope of the ideas she had. I found her taste to be so classy and timeless. Many of her design ideas were so simple and, after the fact, obvious. She was able to simplify what was a daunting project and make it easy. She is truly a pleasure to work with.

> Right up front I want to say that working with Anna has been a wonderful experience. Not only is she talented and creative, but she is also professional. So far we've worked together to design our living room, my sons bedroom and will be moving on to re-do the kitchen in the near future.
>
> Having never worked with a designer before, I had a lot of trepidation. What if I didn't like her ideas? What if she didn't work within our budget? What if all of the decision making stressed us out? The truth is that Anna was able to quickly narrow in on my husband and my different design preferences and from the very first choices she offered us, I knew that this was going to be a great working relationship. For me, her ability to give me a strong "taste" boundary has made me much more confident in making the many choices and decisions along the way.
>
> Being willing to work within our budget was another wonderful .aspect to Anna. I feel like she treated me as well as she would treat any client, even one who had a larger budget.
>
> My favorite experience so far has been the art wall that she helped us create. She is great at this, really. We have a large living room wall that had a TV and not much else. I'd been afraid to do anything with it and we've lived with that big blank wall for years. We love the end result. If you work with her, you will love your end results too!

 - Description: A new vacation home for a long-time client in Palos Verdes. We tried to find pieces that worked with the super contemporary furniture, but that still felt comfortable, warm, textured, and natural. With the whole wall of retractable doors / sliding door in the great room, it's California indoor/outdoor living at it's best!

 - Description: This is my own home that I moved into with my two young kids and my widowed dad. It's the perfect layout for all of us. We were not planning to renovate the kitchen when we bought it, but some issues came to our attention and we ended up gutting it. We were able to really open up the space, replace a small aluminum slider with a much larger window looking out to our backyard view, and created much more pantry and storage space.

 - Description: This house belongs to one of my all time favorite clients and long-time family friend and neighbor. The house has great bones and character on it's own, and the owners came to me in about 2005 to redo rooms that were looking dated from an early 80's renovation. We tackled one room at a time over a period of a few years, so we could really take our time with it. It was so fun because the client and I really work well together. We got to know each other in a whole different way through this proces…

 - Description: This is the house I grew up in and has so many special memories for me. My parents always had beautiful antiques around, and my mom was a landscape architect, so it always looked beautiful! I wish I had more photos of it. These photos are some updates I made for my family, mostly involving new art, in the couple of years before they sold it to retire.

 - Description: This was the first home purchase for a couple with very well-behaved 8 year old twins, and they were determined to make a beautiful house with antiques that would be comfortable for all of them and still just kid friendly enough. They had a decent sized budget, although it wasn't huge, so we were very careful about where to spend the money. We spent very little on simple, basic, neutral upholstered pieces and window treatments. We bought a nice antique rug and splurged on some higher end fabrics…

 - Description: These clients have a love of international travel and cultures, but only had a few interesting pieces from their travels to incorporate when they sought design help. Our goal was to create a textured and layered interior that felt like it had truly evolved over time with the clients. I love that they are not afraid to mix patterns! The end result is comfortable and approachable yet polished and elegant.

 - Description: This was a fun project for a bachelor who renovated a cool old house and needed design help to make it look pulled together yet masculine. We achieved that by using neutral colors, leather chairs, and nice finishing touches like art (large scale photography and Chinese screens) and pillows with beautiful texture and design that aren't too feminine.

 - Description: This is a long-time client who, happily for both of us, has upgraded houses a few times over the past several years. Each time they move, we rearrange their existing furniture in their new space, and fill in the blanks as needed. It's so fun to see it all come to life in totally new ways, and to rework the needs of a busy family with three kids and two dogs.

 - Description: See all photos! In renovating this kitchen/dining area we omitted a redundant table and extended the kitchen space to include more storage and a built-in desk. - Description: See all photos! In addition to new cabinets, finishes and appliances, we made the following renovations: replaced narrow awkward penninsula with larger island to increase counter space and traffic flow, removed ceiling beam which increased room size, enlarged window, and extended range and oven space by moving hallway further to the right.

 - Description: See all photos! We took an ugly bathroom with old tile, a tiny pedestal sink, awkwardly placed toilet, and no storage to a beautiful and functional gem by extending one wall out a few inches and replacing the toilet with a new wall mounted version, which saves space and allowed us to install it on the opposite wall, behind the door.

 - Description: This lovely client was an NYC transplant who first lived in a house in the Hollywood Hills before deciding that the beach was the place for her. She purchased a condo with an ocean view and after selecting her favorite possessions that she had collected over a number of years, we set to work making all of them work together in the new space by adding new pieces with the same global feeling. My favorite is the totally unique bird mirror from JF Chen, and the unusually colored suzani on the bed.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Love the bench!** *(in Photo Questions)*

hWhere I can find ths bench?

A: hello, thanks for your interest in this bench. I had it custom made for the client. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to work together. Thank you.

**Q: What are dimensions?** *(in Photo Questions)*

This is attractive. Two questions.
1\) What is overall width and individual height(s)?
2\) Did contractor use a Schluter system or create seal from scratch?
J

A: There is no Schluter system. The dimensions are: 21" wide, the top is 11.5" high, and the bottom is 7.5" high.

**Q: what is the manufacturer and design name of the floor** *(in Photo Questions)*

color, manufacturer and design of the floor

A: I’m sorry that I don’t know. It was there before I started working on the house.

**Q: How do I buy this** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Christine - I'd love to help you. Please let me know what item you are referring to. Thanks!
Anna

**Q: Shower tile and tub surround must match?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

OK, my eye for design is poor, so my question is...does the tile I use for my shower wall also typically used for my tub surround as well? It was suggested to use gray subway tile in the shower wall, which I am OK with, and to use Arizona Nu Travertine silver matte for the floor, also good with that. Would it look weird to use the Arizona tile instead of the gray subway for the tub surround? I have about 18 inches above the top of the tub for the surround. FWIW, the tub is on the opposite side of the bathroom from the shower. Thanks for your replies.

A: i agree with Skydell Contracting!

**Q: Should I paint my kitchen cabinets?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi!
My husband and I recently bought our first apartment and are doing some updates throughout... long story short the budget won't stretch as far as a full new kitchen.
We are getting new stainless steel appliances and there is room in the budget for a new counter top and backslash (I'm thinking both white as the space is a bit dark).
Our style is modern and I really don't like the orange-y color on the cabinets but they are wood and in great shape... so I was thinking about painting them. I had an estimate for resurfacing done today and at over $9K it is not in the cards for us :/
1\. Would you do a light gray or white or.. something else?
2\. Can anyone recommend a pro that does this kind of work in the NYC area?

A: You can't go wrong with white! Paint it to match the tile:)
