**Q: would like to paint some of this wood** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A: May I ask:  Is the darker color on the rails/balusters already painted a dark color? From my screen the darker tone appears to be a paint.  If so, I would have no problem thinking about repainting those white (I have done it and would recommend a pro).  I agree the carpet is not the ideal look, however stair case work is not inexpensive.  If the carpet came off I would recommend dark wood treads in same tone as the existing posts, railing re-finished to match new treads/posts, white risers, white balusters.

A: There are many things to consider before a DIY project on kitchen cabinets.  A well done job can increase the value of your home and help with resale value.  If done correctly you can achieve gorgeous, long-lasting results.  Consider consulting a pro.

I just purchased a jr one bedroom in bay ridge Brooklyn. I want to renovate the bathroom and need help furnishing and designing a 600 sq ft apartment. Any suggestions?

A: Yes, pictures would help...and also room sizes/layouts and what type of style you are looking to go with.

**Q: Whitewashing dark wood beams?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have dark, heavy red wood beams. Our ceiling is too low for this and it feels claustrophobic. I saw an article about a renovation of a house in Aspen in a modern architecture magazine where they "lightened up" the red wood and made this lovely grey color. Any ideas as to how one could do this?

A: In order to go lighter with a lighter stain, it is likely the beams would need to sanded down first.  If you wanted to paint them you could get them lighter, as you already know.  There are also other finishes like white lacquer...but that would need to be sprayed on.  I work with Sherwin Williams and get great information on which products to use.
