## Community Q&A

**Q: How did you fasten the cedar awning to the brick siding?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi Brendan, I have spent several weeks researching canopy/awning designs using cedar as the building material. I must admit that of all the designs I stumbled across, your curved awning is the most appealing from a visual standpoint. From the contrasting colours to the use of wood pegs versus visible screws, the design is amazing! Nice work! I am trying to build a similar type of awning, but on a slightly smaller scale and with a slope away from the house versus the curved feature you designed. I was wondering how you fastened to the brick, particularly whether, and how, you fastened at the top (not each side of the doorway, but on top of the doorway). Because I am sloping at a angle away from the house, I am trying to determine if I even need to fasten above the doorway, or if the support from the two sides (using shoulder joints and bolts (don't quite have the skill to go 100% wood peg) would be sufficient. We live in a moderately warm climate with little snow, but when it does snow it is quite heavy (pacific northwest). I will be fastening the sides (4x4 cedar) to the frame of the house (either side of door) through stucco. Thanks for your time and again I am so utterly impressed with your craftsmanship and design. Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for your time.

A: Hey,
Thanks for The comment.

I did not fasten along the top area above the door at all. I used large 3/4" lag bolts & shields into the double brick wall (they are visible) to fasten the sides.
Snow load on the roof will cause tension on the horizontal parts as if the whole thing wants to pull away from the wall. Most of the load is carried/transfered by the 2 diagonal braces (that's why they cut in a bit to the opposing beams it's called a "bearing shoulder tenon" among other names), but there still will be some lateral loading on the horizontal parts. I used a bridle joint in the top corners and doubled up on the pegs. Because the pressure on those joints is tension (pulling) I used ipe for the pegs because it's super strong & they need to resist shearing.
I'm no engineer, but it's been through 2 winters now and still holding up. I was not really worried as it's a pretty small awning. It may appear bigger in photos, but only so much snow could possibly pile up on it.
Make sure you get your lag bolts securely into something solid. Stucco can be tricky, and the lags will be the recipient of all the loading.

Good luck!
