I bought a Merlin smart mesh safety cover after my pool builder pushed the product excessively, promising they were the best cover around. The cover didn’t even make it through two winters before ripping. When trying to file a warranty claim I get every excuse as to why the rip isn’t covered under warranty. Merlin does not stand behind their product at all. They believe a tree branch or something must have fallen on the cover to cause the damage. They’ve never even seen my pool, there are no trees above the pool. They refuse to believe that I may have just received a defective piece of material. The warranty is useless. Unless you want to be extremely disappointed, and spending thousands on a new cover every two years, avoid Merlin! Go with a premium brand like Loop Lock and save yourself the headache. **★ — Steve Frank, July 2025** > Terrible pool liners & jist as bad customer service. 2 and a half yr old pool liner started losing color after ONE season and has only gotten worse. Took weeks to get any kind of response from them and then of course after a few emails, it was completely blamed on the pool chemicals which it is NOT. Our chemicals are checked on almost a daily basis especially when opening. Last liner lasted years before showing any fading but was NOT from merlin. This one is actually losing all the pattern in some areas in under 3 years. I guess they're saying we put more chemicals in certain areas of the pool than others?? Even the installers said its a defect but nope, its all from the chemicals. Buy from someone else. Ours is not the only poor review from yet another company that doesn't take any responsibility for what they sell. 20yr warranty huh?...lol....This garbage won't last anywhere near that. **★ — Deb Matz, July 2024** > BEWARE! I would avoid Merlin's covers. They are not like they use to be and the company no longer stands by their products. I had a cover for 15 months and the zipper disintegrated. I am sensitive to the chemical so I do NOT use much of the chemicals but they claim it is chemical damage although the cover itself is fine. Problem here is they are no longer standing by the quality of they products. Don't get burned like I did. **★ — HU-579620657, May 2021** > Tried several of Merlin's listed retailers for a pool cover last year. Was given every excuse from each of them, most blaming Merlin for the problems getting a price. Sure there was a pandemic going on, but I spoke to a Merlin employee who said they were up and running with no issues. He was the one who gave me the list of retailers. We were even getting nasty phone calls from retailers after leaving bad reviews for their lack of service and interest. We were so disappointed in the way we were treated and ignored by the retailers I wrote a letter to Merlin in Sept 2020. To date I have never received a call or email or any response from them. So needless to say we will not be dealing with Merlin any time soon. **★ — HU-38944257, May 2021** > If I could have given review without stars, I would have. Stay away from this brand!! Purchased the King pool stairs. The top step is a foot below the top of my pool. Not a problem if the handrails were higher. But they are not. So there is nothing to hold onto fir the top step when getting in it out of the pool. I called the company to see if there was another way to configure the handrails or even purchase another handrail. Absolutely no help at all. The first person I spoke with hung up on me. The second one told me straight up, we only manufacture, we don’t (won’t) do anything else with the products. They don’t stand behind their products at all. Told me to go back to where I purchased it, maybe they can figure something out. **★★ — Linda A, May 2017** > We needed a new cover for our large pool for fall/winter of 2016-17. We decided on the SmartMesh cover instead of a solid cover based on pictures, and descriptions and advertisements from Merlin. We learned that smartmesh provides 100% shade and no algae in some adds such as Youtube and very reduced chance of algae upon the spring opening in other publications. Also we figured it would be easier for our pool company to remove a SmartMesh cover due to the weight difference. We were assured by our pool company also that this was such a wise choice. Our previous cover was solid except for a center opening for water to drain into the pool. NEVER in 20 years was there any sign of green algae upon opening the pool! Even during the season we never even need algaecide. (Salt pool) Whether the winter was warm or cold it is always clear and blue except some winter debris. Our pool was opened this week; the 1st year of the SmartMesh cover and we were totally SHOCKED at what we saw!!! The entire pool was thick with a forest green murky algae lining every part of the pool bottom and sides. It is a nightmare to remove. Think again if you are going to purchase this product. It is NOT 100% shade. You could see sunlight through it. The warrantee they offer on their products is completely worthless. They refuse to stand behind there product! > > I purchased a spa cover from them in Oct 2014 and it failed the first winter, collapsing under the weight of snow. They took a look at the pictures and responded that the cover was "abused" and therefore the warrantee did not apply. The only way the cover was abused is if simply putting it on the tub is abusing it. > > One important benefit of the review process is to warn other prospective buyers of bad-faith dealings. Consider yourself warned. It would take more than the weight of just snow for the steel to bend like it has. Additionally, our warranty clearly states that “\[t\]his cover is not designed to hold weight without incurring damage.” Our Custom Spa Covers are designed to cover and protect your spa, not to be sat on, walked on, jumped on, or for heavy items to be placed on top of it. > > Our sales representative dealing with your case offered for you to send the spa cover back to our NJ facility for inspection and to be quoted for repairs, which was not accepted.
