The kitchen is off scale and to small...** *(in Design Dilemma)* Wanted open concept, but the kitchen is to small for us, and on paper looks to small compared to other rooms and large empty spaces. This floorplan is paid for and off to the engineers, so I'm limited to structural changes. Was thinking a peninsula? Two islands? How to bump it out without it looking strange. Thanks for any suggestions. A: Hi Natalie...During the course of my day, I had the opportunity to discuss your design with two of my colleagues. We go head to head with this kind of stuff everyday and this is what I would consider if it were my kitchen. Since the structural plan is set in stone (so to speak) then let's make this L-Shape function as good as it can. First, I don't think two islands are needed. I couldn't see for sure the dimensions of your kitchen on the picture provided but I was able to do a bit of common sense calculations and I'd say this is roughly a 13' x 13' L-Shape. Honestly, that is quite a bit of space to cook in if designed correctly. I love to cook so I always look at a kitchen design as if I'm cooking in it. The island is similar to one I designed (see pic below) for a client a couple of years ago. If this was my island, I would raise the seating side of the island 6" higher and I probably wouldn't put my cook-top in the island at all (downdraft venting is expensive and this isn't a Japanese Steak House...Right? ). I would probably be putting my sink in the island just so I didn't have to stare at a wall (as it's currently designed) and feel so confined when doing the dishes. The raised bar will help hide the sink clutter from the great room. Next is the refrigerator. The problem with these monsters is unless you spend more money and purchase a counter depth model, they protrude too far into a floor plan (almost 36" from the back wall) and may hinder traffic flow. An alternative to spending more for a counter-depth model might be to frame a niche into that garage wall so the refrigerator sits back an extra 4-6 inches. I would also consider putting a pantry to the right of it instead of a base and upper cabinet as it would really just be kind of an isolated space and non-functional counter-top. For the oven / microwave on the current sink wall I would suggest putting the oven at the end of the run and the pantry next to it. (flip them) Then put that cook-top centered in the remaining space. The reason I asked for your style preferences was to determine if open shelving as opposed to traditional upper cabinets might lend itself to a unique design. In this case I think it might. Obviously, this is too involved for each of us to solve given our limitations on this medium so I would encourage you to seek out a local independent Kitchen & Bath firm and let them help you design a beautiful and functional kitchen space for your home. Feel free to contact me if you have questions and good luck with your new home...Philip **Q: Need feedback for kitchen design** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello - I'm getting ready have my original 1949 kitchen remodeled and and trying to decide between 2 floor plans, so would like some Houzzer feedback. Option 1 leverages the existing placement of the appliances and would be the cheaper of options. However, I would need to add a pantry unit in the breakfast area to make up for the storage I'd lose by adding a dishwasher. I'm not crazy about having a "z" cabinet to the left of the stove, but in order to maintain enough clearance at that entry way I'm unable to put a standard shape/size cabinet. This option also leaves some dead space left of stove. Option 2 is the best use of the space allowing me to add a lot more surface space on both sides of the kitchen and I would not need the expensive pantry unit in the b-nook. This option requires one of the doorways to move toward the center of wall so that I have more of a galley kitchen. My concern with this configuration is the position of the fridge being right at one of the entry ways. Has anyone done this with success? Seems terribly awkward to have the fridge right at an entrance. Thoughts? Thanks! A: I would agree with Lauren on all accounts. If possible, I never put a refrigerator at the end of a run against a side wall and if I do then careful calculations must be made for the side wall length. Too long and the freezer door (on a side by side) won't open far enough for the drawers to slide out all the way, too short and the refrigerator side is exposed. (The sides rarely match the fronts) Keep in mind that most refrigerators sold at major retail outlets including HD stick out almost 36" (It has to be plugged in and never sits tight against the wall) from the back wall to the handles. Base cabinets are only 24" deep. I have seen many kitchens where this is less than ideal. Another option on some designs aside from a cabinet depth refrigerator is to do a recess wall behind the refrigerator which will allow it to sit back a bit more. Choose the refrig. first so your Contractor can frame the opening correctly to avoid the above mentioned issues...good luck! **Q: Kitchen Problem** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hey Guys! I'm so confused as to what to do with our kitchen. I don't like it as the granite is too pink and along with the cream color distressed cabinets makes the overall look of the kitchen to country for me. I like the look of a modern rustic but this is too rustic. We were thinking of a more modern feel. We are thinking of changing the countertop to a quartzite similar to that of a carrara marble and refinishing the cabinets white with a pewter glaze. The problem I'm running into is that everyone who has come by for an estimate says how nice the cabinets are and are shrikes we want to change them. So now we are second guessing. Is there anything we can do to make it look more modern without hanging the cabinets? I don't think so but I's figure I would try! A: From a Professional's view, I would have to agree with Carolyn. As long as you like the the existing layout and function of this kitchen then I would suggest painting the cabinets. It's difficult for me to see these colors accurately (so I can't really suggest colors) viewing from the internet but regardless, on a kitchen this size, painting the cabinets will save you thousands of dollars. **Q: POLL: Carpet or Hardwood?** *(in Polls)* Do you prefer carpet or hardwood as your go-to flooring material? A: Hardwood with radiant heated floors. **Q: POLL: Wood Floors in the Kitchen?** *(in Polls)* We see a lot of discussions about whether or not hardwood is an appropriate floor covering for a kitchen area with the potential for water always present. What do you think about it? VOTE and share your experience in the comments! A: I love wood floors in the kitchen. My only issue is that I don't recommend setting the cabinetry on top of them. Set your cabinets first and raise them a little if you have to for dishwasher clearance then install the wood flooring.
