The pots contain topiary trees with no under planting. The system runs MWF for 8 minutes on each station. The guy who installed my irrigation system said he didn't think soakers would deliver enough water to my pots in 8 minutes, so he just left the tubes plain, like little garden hoses. Although they put out a ton of water, I think most of it is hitting the side of the pot and spraying over the edge. I have the hoses coiled in the pot (he left me lots of slack) so that one end is on each side of the plant, and pinned down with U shaped wires (I cut the shoulders off wire coat hangers). There are no crimps in the hoses. Do I need something different to better deliver the water to the pots? This isn't working very well and I have to periodically hand-water the pots. A: A non reducing connection between the drip main line tubing and a length of spaghetti tubing is used. Putting a reducing emitter in the container only controls the amount of water to the container it does not distribute it across the surface of the potting medium. A 'spray stake' of the correct type is needed for that. **Q: Help with fixing Sprinkler Design and MP Rotators** *(in Irrigation)* Hello all, I am currently redoing my sprinkler system that was already installed when we purchased our house. The original install was in 2007 by a company that apparently is known to other local contractors for doing crappy work. I just located the valves recently by digging in the yard following the wires from the controller. I installed a valve box over them so they are now easily accessible. The system breakdown was like this before I started changing it: Controller-Weathermatic using 4 zones on the controller Zone 1- Front yard, consisting of 8-9 Rotor heads (most of these are Weathermatic Turbo 3 4" rotors) Zone 2-Back yard, consisting of 7 Rotor heads (most of these are Weathermatic Turbo 3 4" rotors) Zone 3- Flower bed, side of house, perimeter of house, Consisting of 11 Weathermatic pop up spray heads and 4 fixed flowerbed sprays. Zone 4- Sidewalk track of grass between road, consisting of 26 weathermatic pop up heads My question is about spacing for MP Rotators in my situation given the current system layout. Here is the current spacing of the rotors in the back yard. To get even head to head coverage with new MP Rotators I will for sure need to move the head that is semi in the middle of the yard. The space on the edge on the sides is 40 ft which is too far for the MP rotator to throw. To fix this, should I put two heads in the middle of the yard with the spacing suggested in the second image below? Or should I put 3 heads in the middle for square spacing like the 3rd photo? I will be using MP3000 Rotary Nozzles unless I need to use MP2000. Also there is one oddball head in the front yard that comes on with the back yard that I will be relocating to the corner of the backyard that has no head on this zone.... Current Layout of old rotors Triangle spacing with 2 heads in the middle Square Layout with 3 heads in the middle This is was the approximate locations of everything before I started changing it. The static water pressure at the spout is 80psi. The outer strip no longer as 26 weathermatic sprays. I swapped out to the Hunter PRS40 heads with MP Rotators. I used a combination of side strips, left end strips, and right end strips to cut down the total heads on that outer strip to 12 MP rotators. I have head to head coverage with that. I put them all on the inside of the strip spraying towards the road, which I'm hoping works out okay since they are supposed to spray an even rectangular patter. I will keep an eye out for dry spots. A: The MP Rotors are a great product. You need to pay close attention to how the different ones are designed to spray...distance and angles. The Weathermatic (we use them exclusively now) controller should have had an advanced function that is called 'locator' and it causes the valve to "ping", you hear it and can then dig right to it. The Weathermatic T-3 rotor is a great rotor as the dispersal and coverage when at correct spacing for your operating pressure is only bettered by the MP Rotors. We do not normally space ours at any distance over 22-25 feet. Sorry that you were taken by an unethical-non professional. If he has a license, you should notify your state licensing board for them to take action against him/her. Here in NC, designing and installing a system in the manner you describe would have probably caused him serious consequences. **Q: "smart" irrigation systems?** *(in Irrigation)* Normally in my part of the country, high-tech irrigation is overkill, since we have normally reliable(ish) rainfall. However, I do sometimes use a sprinkler timer on vacation. Just academic curiosity at this point...I know that some irrigation systems can sense rainfall and "skip" a cycle, but are they smart enough to know HOW MUCH rain fell? In other words, if we get a paltry pavement-wetter 0.08" storm, that's not sufficient to skip a watering, but if we get 0.7" it probably is. Or - would there be something that can be smartphone controlled remotely? Normally automation for me is only necessary if I'm on vacation for a week or more, but I hate having my sprinkler run on a timer while it's raining (but I'm not there to tell it "no" since I'm 300 miles away!) So from a smartphone, if I have a rain gauge hooked up that can tell me, via my smartphone, that we got 1" of rain last night, I can tell my system NOT to water for XXX number of days. A: Yes, 'smart' systems are usually overkill, and not cost effective for most residential systems. A simple rain sensor, with cork absorbers, correctly set up, is enough to break your common and will interrupt your irrigation signal until it dries out enough to allow the signal again. We use the Irritrol models both wired and wireless. A word of warning...materials purchased from a retail store/box store are not usually the same quality and do not perform like those used by professional Licensed Irrigation Contractors. --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
