And it's been that way for a whole lotta years! **Q: 9ft kitchen ceiling- tall cabinets to ceiling or one normal size with** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are redoing our kitchen. White cabinets. Dark floor. Quartz countertop (Statuario Nuvo Caesarstone). Our kitchen designer wants us to do tall upper cabinets all the way to ceiling. I think it seems a bit like a mausoleum or closed in feeling. Do you think glass cabinet stacked on top would look better? This is a drawing of one of walls. The other will have a hood and doors and the third wall will have a furniture looking cabinet with glass doors. A: We think your interior designer is giving you some really good advice! As the "after" picture from a recent remodel shows, leaving room at the top of the cabinet to run the ceiling moulding around really enhances the overall appearance. Also, be sure to pair your upper cabinets so that they don't close into a stile - cabinet stiles really inhibit storage use. And while we're at it, make the upper cabinets 14" deep so all (not most!) plates will fit! Good luck, and have fun! **Q: Master Bath** *(in Design Dilemma)* Looking for a good company to renovate our master bathroom! Someone who is reasonably priced. Do I have to go through all of the GCs and pick one or is there a message board...I can post and they will contact me? A: Through the years we've found that the best way to find reputable people is to start with a materials source and work backwards. In this case I'd start with a local bathroom fixture supplier and ask the store manager to recommend their top three or four remodeling contractors - those who've been in business a long time; great personality; says what they'll do, and does what they've said; pays their bills on time etc. Most store managers will be thoughtful, and helpful because it's a reflection on their store, and generally they know the best people. From there, I'd interview each candidate, see examples of their work, call the last (no cherry-picking clients!) 5 - 10 people they've worked for, and hire chemistry - the best chemistry that works with yours! There's a lot more to it than what this space allows, but that'll get you started. Good luck! **Q: Backsplash help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Redoing kitchen counters with rainforest green marble counters. We have Golden maple cabinets and floors. With stainless steel appliances. I have looked everywhere for examples of what has been used as a backsplash with RFG and can't find much. Right now I am leaning towards stainless steel mosaic tiles? I would really appreciate some advice with this! Thanks Much! Below I will post a picture of the actual slab being used to make the counters. A: If it helps your thought process, enclosed is a Rainforest Green shower seat with some beautiful tile (I can't remember what it's called) to enhance the look. Perhaps you could go this route. **Q: Need help with an uniquely placed front door** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just bought a new Arts and Crafts style home. We love the new house, but the front door to the house is uniquely placed and I don't know how to fix it. (If you follow the path to the house, you would turn right and the front door is there... it leads to a small vestibule that then takes you to another door that welcomes you to the living room:)). I don't love that the path leading up the house is in the center of the yard and draws your attention to the back of the fire place and not the entryway. It looks disorienting from the street because you don't see a front door. How should I fix this? I'm having a hard time finding inspiration and problem solving this situation. I hope I was clear. Thank you in advance! A: Your home has really good "bone structure" but there's no sense in playing hide and go seek with the front door. First club out of the bag: focus on the windows on either side of the fireplace and see if it's possible to turn one of them into a front door. Do either of them lead to this vestibule you referred to, or are they straight into the living room? Second club out of the bag: look through Houzz and see if there is a local architect that can help. You've got a gem here, but I agree with you, it's a little funky to drive up to this beautiful house and not be able to find the front door. **Q: Laying Hardwood flooring on concrete foundation** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just bought a new home. it has pretty hard wood floors throughout the entire house except the bottom floor (its a split level.) The downstairs has old, ugly linoleum. The previous owers left enough real hard wood to do the living area but underneath the linoleum is only concrete. No plywood subfloor. Unless I dreamed this, I was thinking there was some special type of glue that could be used for hardwood to concrete surfaces? without having to lay a plywood subfloor? Is this possible? If so, what has been your experience? Suggested products for use, etc? Thanks so much for all your input. Trying to keep costs down if possible, but not to the point where I would want to compromise the finished product or integrity of the floor in the long run. Thanks. A: Homepromike's got this one right! Just a side note, we recently completed a remodel where the Family Room slab had been dropped for wood skreets, plywood, and then hardwoods. They used a plastic membrane to control moisture. But the adjacent Kitchen was tile and the client wanted the hardwoods continued into the Kitchen. Our options were to glue down "oak shorts" or short pieces of oak flooring that wouldn't cup or curl as bad, or lace longer lengths of "engineered hardwood" into the existing wood floor. That's what we ended up doing and the engineered wood with 1/2" plywood with hardwood veneer impregnated on the face has done a wonderful job! --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
