S Squared Design LLC is a design studio that is about concocting designs that are innovative, modern and stunning. Being different in the design world is a great thing, and that is exactly what Suzanne strives for in every design she formulates. Her trademark “modern, stylish and functional” style is why her clients keep coming back for more. She unites pieces together in a way that are typically thought to be a little “off the wall” but clients appreciate the details she puts into each design.

Suzanne Suarez Maraia is passionate about well-designed spaces. At a young age she rearranged rooms in her parent’s home, more frequently than someone so young would typically do. As she grew up, she moved on to paint walls when her parents weren’t home, calling these “surprises” for her parents. Suzanne, a native Houstonian, attended the University of Houston where she studied interior design and architecture. There her love for interiors flourished into what now is, a design studio that is forward thinking and stunning. In the early years of Suzanne’s career, she worked in design showrooms and also for one of the nation’s top luxury home builders until she launched S Squared Design, and has not looked back since.

Suzanne is an allied member of ASID, and frequently attends local and national industry trade shows, so she can offer designs with the latest technology and design trends in mind. Suzanne works hard to establish and develop a relationship with each client, to help create enriching environments that impact people's everyday lives. She caters to your likes, needs, and wants while focusing on functionality and design to transform your space into what it truly should be.

> Suzanne handled the design and procurement for our Primary and Hall bathroom renovations in April 2023, down in Clear Lake. She did a great job! Easy to work with, creative, and experienced. We are very pleased with the result.
>
> For our project she was teamed up with Rick O’s Remodeling and Construction, who we also recommend.

**★★★★★ — marissa, April 2021**

> great job bringing structure to loose ideas. she kept within our budget and went a bit above and beyond when we struggled to communicate with our contractor

**★★★★★ — Patricia D, March 2021**

> I really appreciated working with Suzanne on my kitchen renovation. Getting started I was overwhelmed with all the options and frankly with work and family responsibilities, I struggled to find time to go and see the options out there, not to mention I didn't even know where to go to find things outside of the traditional box stores.
>
> Leveraging her expertise was key to the overall success! She was able to pull together selections for everything from flooring to paint color, fixtures, hardware, the works! It was perfectly coordinated and achieved the look / flow I was going for. It saved me a ton of time and angst, and it gave me confidence in the selections. Beyond the talent for design, she is also a pleasure to work with. Prompt, helpful and super patient with me when I struggled to make a decision.

> Suzanne was a critical element to my master bath remodel. Her professionalism and communication is outstanding. She listened to all my needs and developed a stunning and custom design that fits my style and budget. During the project she was always checking in with contractor and making sure everything was on time, on budget, and well designed. Her knowledge, work ethic, personalization of her design space, and skill set is priceless! Outstanding professional that provides high end quality from beginning to the end! Thank you Suzanne for making my remodel and amazing experience.

> We'd been planning a remodel for a few years, and overwhelmed with the possibilities, we decided we needed to call in a professional. Suzanne was recommended to us by friends, and after our first meeting, I felt she had a good understanding of what we were looking for. She was able to see our space with fresh eyes and propose a design we hadn't even envisioned was possible. When we met again to review her proposal I was stunned by how on point she nailed our personal style and aesthetic — really, we only changed one or two things about the design. She even gave us some tips on rearranging the furniture to fit our new design. Would absolutely recommend her.

> We had a bad experience with Suzanne who owns Ssquared design. There were red flags in the beginning, which I wish we had realized on time.
>
> First, you pay $300 for a consultation, and you do not get to see any design until you sign the contract and pay a large portion of her design fees up front. We hired her to do design and also to hire the contractors and manage the project. She said she would be on site several times per week to check on the progress of the work.
>
> During the consultation, we talked about the kind of things we wished and budget. We wanted to stay below $60K.
>
> A few weeks after we signed a contract with her, paid 50% of her design invoice, and we had a second meeting during which she showed us some rough sketches of design options. We picked one and she told us that would be about $70K, obviously higher than we wanted to pay. So we asked for a detailed invoice of the renovation cost to see where we could cut down. It should have been her job, by the way. She sent us three documents: the contractors invoice, an invoice for her design and management fees, and one for the material. When we got those, we realized the $70K did not even include her fees and the material, it was only for the contractor’s part! In the end it was going to be a $100K renovation, far from the $70K she had told us!
> In addition, we found several mistakes in her invoice, including missing material. When we pointed that out to her, her response was that she does not usually share the details of the invoice with her clients. Were we supposed to blindly pay for a renovation without ever seeing the invoice? Especially after seeing so many mistakes? At that point I was feeling uncomfortable and started not trusting her, but then we already had signed a contract, right? So in the end we decided to skip part of the renovation and not redo the kitchen to save money. We paid the full amount for the contractor’s cost upfront to her and she was responsible for paying him as the project advanced. We also paid her the estimated cost for the material, appliances, and light fixtures.
>
> Another thing to note is that the quote to redo the electrical that her contractor gave her was very high. We independently got a quote from an electrician we trusted, which turned out to be much lower (by thousands of dollars), so we decided to do the electrical with him instead. She committed to take care of the communication between him and her contractor. However, in practice she did not communicate with him, and we ended up having to do it. This was a huge hassle that caused several problems down the line.
>
> We soon learned that Suzanne does not answer emails quickly and does not like to talk to her clients on weekends or holidays, which I can understand at some level, but I am not convinced it is good practice when you run a business and there can be emergencies to take care of. Checking messages once in a while on weekends shouldn’t be too much to ask.
>
> The whole project was supposed to take 6-8 weeks to complete after the start date. Toward the supposed end of the project, though it was not complete yet, she asked for a second partial payment of her fees. We pointed to her that she had not updated her invoice after we decided to not renovate the kitchen, so her invoice should reflect that or, if we were going to pay for a kitchen design, we should be getting a full complete design and be able to use in the future. She never replied to that email, never sent us the design or updated her quote, and never asked for that money again.
>
> Around that same time, she told us that she had talked to the contractor and that they were on schedule to finish a week later, so we could schedule the move. So that was great. Or so we thought. We gave them an extra two days, just in case, booked movers, and scheduled cleaners. Five days before the move, we went to see the house and there were so many things that were not done and things not done right. Not just a few little things, but A LOT. And not just painting, but also some construction work! We spoke directly to the contractor at that point who said he did not know about all the things that were left to be done, and that he never told her the house would be ready by the date she gave us. There was a long list of things left to do and we know we had gone over them with her both orally and by email. And yet it was not done. Five days before the move. We were livid and we told her that. Our belongings had to be moved into the house because of her bad estimation of the completion date, which means the contractors had to work around all of our stuff, making their job more difficult.
>
> Clearly, she had not done her job, she had not been on site often enough, and did not communicate with the contractor even the times when she explicitly said that she has done so. She never once apologized for those mistakes. Oh, and the fridge she had bought for us DID NOT WORK in the space we had! The dimensions were correct but it was a two-door fridge with a freezer on one side and because it was against a wall, we could barely open the freezer door! This kind of design flaw is the exact reason why we hired a designer. And she failed miserably. Never apologized for that mistake either.
> At that point, we went on a three-week long trip we had planned and told her it had to be finished when we come back. That should have been plenty of time for them to finish the project. We also asked her to have the fridge switched by the time we came back from our trip. Mid way through the trip, we had not heard anything about the new fridge and enquired about it. She had not ordered it yet. She sent us some options by email, none of them had an ice maker, so we ended up doing an online search ourselves and finding the right fridge for the space \*ourselves\* after she said it was too difficult. By the way, that fridge was about $400 less than the one she had originally purchased but she never refunded us for the difference. She also charged us for backsplash in the original material quote but never refunded it after we decided to not work on the kitchen.
>
> Three weeks later, we get home late at night, with our kids, after a 15 hour long trip and 7 hours of jet lag. And we find the painter still inside the house! It was not even finished! Our petsitter told us they never came more than a couple days/week while we were gone, and even after we got back home they were not showing up every day and bringing only 1 or 2 guys. The next day we also realized the dishwasher had not been installed. We emailed her to express our discontent and that is when she just quit. She emailed to tell us she was no longer going to be part of the project and we would have to deal with the contractor ourselves.
>
> The contractor initially claimed that he had not received all his money and that we still owed him several thousands dollars. We told him we already paid it to Suzanne and that he had to get the money from her. He clearly got some of it because he continued working a little, but not very efficiently. At some point, we asked him to fix a few more things and he refused because he said we still owed a few hundreds of dollars. Suzanne told him we had added extra items to the renovation and that this extra cost was on us. This was not true, but since she also owed us several hundreds of dollars (remember the cost of the fridge, the backsplash, etc?), we did not think it was fair to ask us to pay extra without any accounting. So we asked for detailed invoices to show what we really owed. She never sent it. We also had to ask her a dozen times to get the proof of purchase for the appliances so that we can get covered by the warranty in case something broke. She was not responding to emails until we threatened to go to court. She sent us the appliances receipts but never the proof of purchase for the garage door. To date, several months later, we still do not have any info on where it was purchased.
>
> In summary Suzanne may have a few good design ideas, but she does not follow through with them, makes lots of mistakes, and does not take responsibility for them. It is not acceptable to thinking clients should pay her whatever amount of money she wants without ever seeing the detailed invoices. She is irresponsible by not answering emails from her clients, and by quitting the job before completion.

> Suzanne was thoughtful and creative and helpful in coordinating with subcontractors. She was reasonable in her charges and reasonably available for discussions. Her vision and coordination made our spaces a well designed home.

**★★★★ — lia\_woodall, Aug. 2015**

> Suzanne of S-Squared Design is a thoughtful, enthusiastic and resourceful professional designer. We are thrilled with the results of our loft living space: new furniture, lights, refinished antique dining table and chairs, art work hung. It finally feels like home after moving and downsizing from Denver. We had particular challenges with needing additional storage, especially in the large walking closets. Suzanne was flexible with our feedback and listened carefully to what we wanted, while giving us good direction and ideas. And she was always respectful of our time, budget and home. I wanted to rank her at 4.5 stars (but couldn't figure out how to do that) and only because there were some difficulties with work being scheduled with subcontractors that caused delays. She recognized that they were not satisfactory and did what she could to coordinate and communicate with them to get the job done. Ultimately, they are no longer in her stable of resources as she doesn't want to pass on that headache to other clients. We highly recommend Suzanne for your next project.

> We hired S Squared Design for our kitchen and fireplace remodel. We have an early 90's traditional style home and wanted to add a modern twist that would tie in with the more classic look in the rest of our home. We thought about the design on our own for about a year, but could never put all the pieces together. So we called S Squared - Suzanne helped us pull it all together and was wonderful to work with! She came in with several beautiful layouts of kitchen designs that tied together everything we wanted - and bonus, they all worked beautifully with or without our current granite, which allowed us some additional flexibility in our budget! I was very impressed with how she seemed to pull the flawless designs together so effortlessly and helped us make final choices. She also performed project management on this job and was great at working out all the details with the construction manager so that we could really sit back and relax! Thank you again, Suzanne!

**★★★★★ — Jennifer Boswell, July 2015**

> The space I was having designed was a small 800+ square foot loft space near downtown. I provided Suzanne with some eclectic out-there design ideas and she really nailed the details. She picked a lovely color scheme that fit the style I was going for. She offered a lot of advice on how to make the most out of my new space. She was very personable and professional, and also very conscious of my time.
>
> Lisa has a great eye, and she's also very flexible and can adapt to your style. She also offered a lot of small, simple touches to really make certain rooms pop, or make them feel more symmetrical and open.
>
> She was also great about answering follow-up questions. I felt I got great value for the money I’ve spent. And the new space looks absolutely amazing.

**★★★★★ — Brendan Muller, July 2015**

> Suzanne provided an excellent design and provided an exceptional step-by-step guide with contacts, item descriptions, and layouts for all parts of the design. Most importantly, the design and ultimate product looks great! Pricing for design services was affordable / cost-effective and at appropriate level to our needs. Suzanne was confident and available for all steps of the project from plan design to final walk-through / follow-up.

**★★★★★ — Steven Stone, March 2015**

> Great to work with S Squared. Not pushy on their own designs but listened to, incorporated, and perfected my own thoughts. Very pleased with the outcome, experience, and assistance. Even helped after the job had been completed.

We created a beverage bar area, lots of pantry cabinet space and plenty of pots and pan storage. We even created a space for the 3D printer to live and do it work without taking up precious counter space. Style was geared toward being timeless, easy to m…

We also converted the island to pull out drawers inside the cabinets to allow for mare pantry item storage. Limited counter space was an issue so lifting the microwave off the counter was key. A couple things my client had on their must have list included a 6 foot tub, a curb-less shower and plenty of storage for everything they needed to access everyday in the bathroom. We relocated the shower and tub to allow for a larger that normal tub and giving plenty of light from the cave of a shower they had before. In the shower…

## Community Q&A

**Q: I like the bed.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Do you know who makes it?

A: Hi there, thanks for the question. This bed is from a company called environment furniture (http://www.environmentfurniture.com/) I don't believe this model is available any longer but they make some great furniture.

**Q: Where did you get the artwork over the bed?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hello there, thanks for the question. It was purchased here https://www.etsy.com/shop/FinnellFineArt?ref=l2-shopheader-name. It is a print on canvas not an original. Looks great in the space, was perfect for this bedroom. Hope that helps!

**Q: What is the backsplash** *(in Photo Questions)*

I have similar color in the kitchen except the cabinets are dark cherry-ish.

A: Hi there, thanks for the question. The backsplash is a stacked vein cut limestone.

**Q: Wall decor?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Are those framed prints actually scrapbook paper? If not, do you think it could work with scrapbook paper?

A: Hello there, thanks for the question! They are digital prints from https://www.etsy.com/shop/inkandnectar?ref=pr\_shop\_more. I am sure scrapbook paper could be used for a similar look.

**Q: Where are the black cabinents from? What are they called?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hello there, thanks for the question. The cabinets are from Ikea, called
TINGSRYD.

**Q: Console** *(in Photo Questions)*

Where can I buy the console?

A: Hi there, thanks for the question. These are from West Elm, this is actually 2 consoles placed side by side.
