This is a rental so remodeling is not an option. We are painting it a medium to dark gray with a white trim. The shutters will be coming off. (I like shutters but they don't make sense on most of these windows.) These corner windows are quite attractive inside... A: Plant something that will grow quickly in front of the sidewalk. A tree centered on the wall and about 6 to 8 feet in front of the sidewalk. Or plant a trellis with a creeping vine type of plant between the sidewalk and the wall. **Q: How can I give my Arts and Crafts bungalow a more contemporary feel?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I love my 1925 bungalow and the original woodwork was one of the reasons for buying. But, after 20 years in it I'd like a lighter, more contemporary look but my husband loves all the dark wood. Anyone have any ideas on whether this can be done with possibly new furniture, rug and decorative items? Maybe retile the fireplace with lighter tile? The living room is long and narrow 20'x12' with the entry door at one end of the long wall so traffic has to go through the room. Please help. I really don't want to get rid of my husband so I can paint the woodwork. He may be an older model but he still makes me laugh :) A: The woodwork is beautiful and a large part of the VALUE of your home in resale. Your furniture is too visually heavy and your current accessories, while lovely, are too dark. If you like the white walls, they are fine. A warmer white would make the room feel less stark. The tile on the fireplace is also in keeping with craftsman design. It's not the problem. The first thing to change out is the rug. Go light with minimal pattern. The grey couch looks very "waiting room." Find something lighter in color and less clunky. The coffee table is very 70's. Swap it for something glass. Eliminate all of the dark Autumn Indian colors in the throw pillows, pottery and art. Pick 2 new accessory colors in a "spring" color range. Get rid of the wooden sticks in the corner. Add some small plants for some green. It's missing the layer of "life," Also, the room feels "harsh" because it lacks the layer of window treatments. They do not need to be heavy or obtrusive. Add some thickly gathered floor to ceiling fabric panels at each side of the dining room window. **Q: Above bed** *(in Design Dilemma)* Not sure what to put above my bed. I have a birch tree photo with red. Do I put something metal, mirror, a wooden plaque with a saying ? I'm stuck. Other than that, I don't have anything else on my walls. A: You have a nice room. You don't have as large of a room a as the beautiful grey room with round mirror above. The wall is fine just as it is. Notice in the photos above the plants and tiny tall floral on the nightstand. Your room lacks that layer of "life." The wall mounted lights and light pattern on the wall already create what you think you need. **Q: Gallery Wall** *(in Design Dilemma)* I tried putting together my first gallery wall in my daughters room. As you can see I positioned the frames in an oval shape and tried mixing a variety of shapes around a 'bird' theme. I'm still not happy with it, maybe it's the colours. Can anyone give me advice on how to improve it? A: It is lovely. Put a little double stick tape at each picture frame top corner of the crooked frames. It will help to keep them even. What might be bothering your "eye," is the placement of the furniture on this wall doesn't work as part of the composition. Is it possible to center the white dresser or the bed under this art grouping? **Q: curb appeal??** *(in Design Dilemma)* can't figure out how to make my house look nicer. I was thinking about painting the siding a gray that is found in the bricks but I have nothing past that. also the carport is very odd :/ A: A cool grey paint will work. Consider changing the shutter color to a dark grey blue to contrast with the brick. You could paint the railing the same color a the shutters and add a row of landscaping in front of the rail. **Q: i could really use some help with this bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)* We moved in a month ago , and i still can't pick a vanity -mirror-towel hooks-shelves and all other stuff that's missing. My husband loves this polished chrome look,and that's ok, but i feel like i can add some of my favorite brass /gold warm looking details, and i don't know how to ,or where to start. That's why i could really use some advice how to warm up this bathroom . A: The style of your towel hooks, toilet paper holder and other attached pieces should coordinate in style, shape, finish and color with your plumbing hardware. Warm the room up with paint color, floor rug, towel color, candles, soap dish, soap color, and art. Pik a mirror with a wooden frame. It could be distressed or stained.
