Understanding that interior environments are static is the best way to accept that selecting one color is never too important. The STORY is first and it determines the PALETTE. Consistent primary colors are teal and orange with secondary pops of yelllow. Walls throughout are a bright white. Sorry for the crappy night time photos!!! 2 rug options are explored below. Help please! A: I see you are a "high contrast" personality. But I would tone down the colors more in the medium to dark ranges (since the floor is very light) like the colors in the photo of the comment above. And use more of the aqua - also to contrast with the floor and tie in with the sofa so it doesn't stand alone without any support. **Q: Design Debate: Painting wood ceilings white — For or Against?** *(in Polls)* Some designers argue that if an original architect meant for a wood ceiling to be unpainted, so should it remain forever. Others say it's perfectly fine to update with the modern era and add a little paint. How do you feel? Don't forget to read our debate conversation on this topic, too! A: It is so dependent on the "Story" you are telling - isn't it? **Q: Need help with living room layout (off-center fireplace)** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello All, Please excuse the drawings and proportion issues, but I hope you get the idea. My design dilemma relates to area rugs, focal points, furniture placement, balance, symmetry, etc. I have a 9x12 nuLOOM Verona rug we just bought for our living room which is not yet furnished. We had planned to anchor the room with a 3 cushion couch on the back wall facing the fireplace, as well as a leather coffee table/ottoman and some chairs (or a love seat), side tables, lamps etc. We haven't gotten very far due to this dilemma. The actual problem is more dramatic than the pictures I've attached due to my less-than-perfect drawings and proportions. If we center the rug against the fireplace (and the room) a few things happen. One, the corner of the area rug nearest the entryway is liable to be tripped on as it's right in the line of fire. Two, the couch would be very much off-center to the back wall and how would that work with say putting a mirror behind the couch (centered on couch which would be off-center on wall) as it wouldn't reflect directly across from the fireplace and picture above the mantle. If we center the rug on the back wall, the fireplace which is the focal point, will be out of alignment with the rug and the couch if centered on the rug, as would any additional furniture added to the grouping. Really need help before moving forward and happy to answer questions and clarify. Thank you in advance for your design ideas as well. jtzxi PS: Window to left is a picture window. Doors are single French. Entryway (which is larger than the doors) leads to/from front foyer. Mantle is white wood, fireplace and hearth are black brick. A: Can you send a photo? **Q: Does this work together?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Trying to learn to coordinate patterns-can I use these together? A: Absolutely. lots of nice movement going on with the "grey" story **Q: Need help with living room** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have no idea what I'm doing and would love some help. I need a new couch and chairs. I know I want something smaller (and just better looking), but I don't know what color or what style. I was thinking about getting rid of the green. I can make new covers for the ottomans. I don't mind buying new curtains. A: If I am right, assessing the color you chose for the walls, you are a high contrast person. adding neutrals in large areas would kill the room. Working with everything you have (the curtains are fine) I would use prints, stripes, patterns - with a white background - with colors that pick up the green wall (which is a green/blue) and add a bit of the complementary color - orange (red/yellow). Doing that will soften the wall color and add some excitement to the room. In the attached photo with the green/white rug - use something like that on the sofa, a chair or pillows. The "orange" photo illustrates a stripe that uses the wall color to best advantage (ignore the rug in the picture) . Your green wall is great. Just lighten it with some crisp whites in addition to the patterns. Go with your gut. Looks to me like you are doing great with the choices you have made.
