## About

- 1,000 Ideabook Saves

Informed by a multi-cultural background, nurtured in the United States, formed in Europe and with an umbilical cord still attached to China, David Ling founded David Ling Architects in 1992. After training as an associate with Richard Meier, I.M. Pei, and Emilio Ambasz, Ling established an international practice in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Specializing in exhibition spaces, creative offices, high-end retail, high-end residences and institutional spaces, the essence of Ling's architectural work is the artistic integration of space, form, light and function enriched by materiality. As all projects are treated as unique, so too is Ling’s creative vocabulary, tailored to diverse clients, sites, budgets and programs. Ling’s approach is a sculpted choreography of opposites, forming a dialogue of interlocking spaces and forms articulated in a crafted use of materials, ennobling space and form through materiality and light.

Ling’s seventeen years of work has received numerous international awards such as the Interior Design Magazine’s 2007 Future Furniture Award and 2003 Kitchen and Bath Designer Leader Award, Benjamin Moore’s 2006 Hue Awards for Best Residential Interiors, the Municipal Arts Society’s 2002 National Design Award, the 2001 Best Exhibition Design from ICFF, and the Bienal Miami + Beach 1999 Gold and Silver medals.

Ling’s work has been published in numerous international magazines and newspapers, indluding the New York Times, Interior Design, Interiors, House and Garden, Elle Décor, Metropolitan Home, Dwell, Wallpaper, Arte, Dwell Video, Casa da Abitare, Interni, Architektur und Wohnen, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, VM+SD, and Burlington Magazine.

Ling has held teaching positions at Parsons School of Design and University of Nuremburg and has served on design juries at Interiors Magazine, Interior Design Magazine/Hospitality Magazine, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania.

> As a builder in Naples, Florida, we recommend David and his team at David Ling Architect to anyone in the New York Metro Area, as well as anyone who owns in Naples, Bonita Beach, or Marco Island, who wants to either design and build a custom home, or wants to remodel a luxury home or condo.
> David understands that you want your own special place, that reflects your style and taste. It is imperative that you trust the team you have chosen to design your dream. David Ling Architect is a team you can trust and we highly recommend them.

> I've had the pleasure of working with architect David Ling on two occasions. The first project was in 2008, and consisted of a seven month $700,000 gut reno of a NYC Village penthouse condo of 1,900 s.f. interior and a 1,800 s.f. exterior wrap terrace. The second project is a current, ongoing four month $350,000 gut reno of a NYC midtown co-op of 1,100 s.f. In both cases, David has provided exemplary aesthetic vision and project oversight. From the initial meeting, David listens aggressively, is able to understand and digest a client's vision and desires, and inject both a bit of reality as well as refine the client's concepts in a way that enhances the overall project. Throughout the early design phase, the interviewing and hiring of the contractor(s), the choosing of final materials, the actual renovation itself, and follow through at the end, David was a calm presence, completely without drama. In the few cases where on-site alterations or reconsiderations were required, everything was handled efficiently. David returns communications quickly, is regularly present on the site to monitor progress, and the contractor we eventually chose that was one of three he had recommended was also of equal calibre. The projects come in on-time and on-budget (unless the client themselves makes change orders on the fly while in process). All in all, David is extremely and highly recommended, and I would strongly suggest an interview with him to see if he is a good fit for your own project.

**★★★★★ — browngrotta arts, Oct. 2013**

> We have used David Ling for more than one project. He is a consummate problem solver -- listening to the client, pushing the client to consider various options and, ultimately, deriving a solution that is true to his vision while still meeting the client's needs. In our first home, he contemporized the kitchen of a 1927 farmhouse, creating an elegant, sculptural island in a room that respected the architectural integrity of that original space. We then moved to an 1895 barn that we asked David to contemporize, while being mindful of the original materials, and to expand and design with art display as a priority. He assisted us in selecting the barn and the renovation reflects his suggestions and talent throughout. The space is wholly successful in meeting the multiple goals we asked David to meet, working well as a home, business, entertainment space and art gallery.

**Comment from David Ling Architect:**

> I worked with Brown-Grotta Arts as their architect, designing two separate projects that integrated art with living. The first project was designing an addition to their colonial home, which contained kitchen and office spaces. We created a 2 storey contemporarty space flooded with light, while keeping the overall colonial facades, salvaging windows and details where we could. When they relocated, they asked me to design their larger home with an even larger collection. I converted a barn and added a new "barn" respectful of the architecture of the original barn. They came with a renown fibre collection and a passion for design to match. The spaces we created together were the fruits of a close, respectful collaboration that brought the best out their collection, the best out of the original barn and the best out of my creative energy. I am so pleased with the results. Their collection was such a pleasure to work within the context of a home environment.
