> We met Matt at the Mpls Home and Garden show and were very impressed talking to him at the show. We hired him to design our contemporary house that we plan on building in a few years. He required 50% down to get our project started which we promptly paid. After 4 months from paying our retainer fee, we finally got our 1st preliminary drawings. Matt then came out to our house to review the plans. Here's what we wrote to him after this meeting:
>
> ""When we met with you, we wanted to point out the things that were done well:
> \- you followed our room requests very well
> \- you kept the size close to what we want
> We also tried to tell you what we didn’t like, but feel like you didn’t want to hear them:
> \- the roof lines are too complicated – we want it as simple as possible
> \- we don’t love the shape/style of the house
> \- the house plan is not designed to take full advantage of passive solar principles
> \- the master closet is too big
> \- the layout is not something that we are excited about yet
>
> So at this point, we need to decide if we are able to work together or not. Are you interested in making some major changes to the house plan? We got the feeling that you have made up your mind on what our house should look like and are not interested in listening to what we don’t like about the plan. We understand that it may seem like we don’t like your ideas, but the way we look at it is, that we are the customer and we are the ones that will be living in and paying for the house. We want to like what you come up with – but it needs to be something that we are happy with too! If you are not willing to work with us, then it seems best that we cut our losses at this point and go our own ways. Please let us know your thoughts on this.""
>
> As you can see we were hoping for a completed design but Matt never responded to this last email.
> Maybe we were hard to work with?? We're not sure because he has never responded!
> I hope Matt gets this message so he can let us know what he's thinking.

**Comment from Abode Design Solutions:**

> Hello Phil - the retainer paid was 500 dollars and not 50 percent as listed. For this 500 dollars I spent several hours on site on two occasions and provided in my professional opinion a good interpretation of your lengthy list of program requirements in not only written but plan form - elevation and 3d drawings were also delivered. The retainer paid was for schematic or concept documents. After our last meeting I was under the impression we were on the same page and moving forward with what we discussed on site. I was blind sided by your rather discouraging email and now post along with negative review years later. I guess sometimes a clients written program requirements do not translate into what they envisioned when translated into 3d form by another party. I suppose I cut my losses by not responding. In closing I wish you luck in your quest for the home of your dreams.

> Matt is a great pleasure to work with.
> I had met Matt at the Twin Cities spring Home and garden show some years back. And being I have a design back ground I found my conversations with him to be more informative than any of the other individuals from other Architect offices I had come across. Then in 2008 I asked Matt if he would be interested in designing a home for my parents that would have a lot Victorian style features. He stated he would love too and we were off and running. I gave him some initial ideas and a few requirements as in must have features. And while we had some slight modifications before we got to the final design the work he did along with the unique features he added gave us an outstanding design.
> I now find myself looking at another project where I will need to incorporate a man cave shop and living quarters. And since this building will be more exposed to natures wraith in a more or less open field setting I’ll be looking to do 80% or more of the building with ICF construction. I have a great deal of confidence that what I’ll be proposing in this next design Matt will come though and give it design features that will not only exceed my intended use of this space but will also give it some added flare in style as well.

> Matt is a true professional and very talented at what he does. He works with clients closely to create a unique design that works practically and keeps their budget and needs in mind. His experience and knowledge of not only designs but build costs are invaluable assets to his clients that not very many professionals can bring to the table.

> Matt was wonderful to work with. He knows his software like the back of his hand. After making multiple changes and a few on site meetings he was able to get our customer exactly what they wanted and the plans and drawings we needed to help expedite the permitting process and the overall process of the project. We will be working with Matt on a regular basis.
