## Community Q&A

**Q: HELP - I need help deciding on storm door color.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We plan to replace this old screen door with a full-view glass storm door. The front door is now painted white but we plan to paint it a different color (possibly black). We also want to add shutters on each side of the window. My dilemma - do I order a storm door with a white frame or black frame? The woodwork around the door will remain white.

A: I agree with Barnhart Gallery. Stick with the same color on both doors. I like the way the black doors with the black shutters, as Barnhart so artfully crafted above, lets the white trim and red brick stand out. Beautiful curb appeal. Nice work!

**Q: Is it really that bad?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm looking into buying a modular home. Getting a flat finish ceiling is extra. Textured ceiling is standard. Is it worth several hundred dollars to upgrade this? Are popcorn "knock-down" ceilings so bad?

A: It is in the eye of the beholder! It's your home. Which do you prefer? If the look of the popcorn ceiling appeals to you AND saves you money go for it! Resale will not be significant enough for it to matter, and if it's your home you will have many years of living before you have to even begin to worry about that.

**Q: Wall paper?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is that maybe wallpaper?

A: It looks fantastic! We can help with those types of custom wallpaper projects should anyone need some advice or pricing.

**Q: Looking for ideas for a kitchen backsplash.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I live in a fairly new house (7 years old) and love my kitchen. It is in the middle of the house, open and airy, overlooks the main living space and is positioned with views of the outside. We designed with a local design center but could not commit to a a backsplash at the time. It has oversized natural cherry solid wood cabinets, Kitchen Aid Architect series matte stainless appliances, quartz countertops in a mix of black, brown and tan, with light marblized ceramic floor tiles. I am looking for ideas and am open to suggestions. I am trying to narrow my search here but am feeling a bit overwhelmed (and distracted) but all the design choices. Would you please explain to me how to refine my search, and/or provide design suggestions. Susan C.

A: It depends on your budget. Quartz to match your counter tops would be nice, but expensive. You could also apply glass tiles - often overlooked by designers. They are affordable, washable and beautiful. If you want something inexpensive, easy to install and something that you could change whenever you like you should consider these backsplash tiles. They are a laminate composite - lightweight, durable and affordable:

**Q: Need help on paint color for interior hall** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am trying to decide what color to paint this interior hallway. There is no natural light so I will likely add a small mirror next to door (see pic for one possible mirror/table combo). I am considering continuing the chocolate brown into this interior hall but wondered if I should also continue the chair rail…i.e. chocolate on top, white dove on bottom. THank you

A: I really like the colors you've chosen with the chair rail. I think you run the risk of this hallway becoming very dark with that choice, however. I think it is the perfect opportunity to introduce a wall sconce. Have you considered that? Also, have you considered wallpaper? Paintable wallpaper, whether painted or just hung in white, can be nice for small spaces like this.

**Q: Help finish family room, what's missing?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

So I got my rug and accent chairs as well as the sofa in yesterday. The loveseat is not staying. In thinking of getting one or two recliners to replace it.
I know I need pillows, lamps and wall art. The pictures above the sofa don't really go. I am in the process of reviewing finishing the end tables and I'm not sure what to do about a coffee table, with recliners it has to be so far away. I would like to make the coffee table a chest of some kind to store blankets in that I will use to protect furniture from pets when we are gone.
What is wrong and what am I missing?

Thanks again

A: Wow. You sure are getting help from a lot of friendly and knowledgeable people. I'll just stick to the coffee table situation and give my two cents on that. I was in Ikea recently and found a table that opens for storage and hinges back toward the couch or recliner to also serve as a laptop desk type of thing. I can't find the link but I found an 'ikeahack' where someone made their own. I am sure if you look it now comes hacked for you, but this gives you an idea of how it works:
