Why "Full Fathom Five"? Shakespeare wrote a play called "The Tempest" in which magic, artifice, deep feeling, long knowledge, and wit combine to bend reality and shake up an intolerable situation. I love the themes of the play, and its famous song, beginning, 

Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.

It's a teasing song, as no one's father has really been drowned, and it captures just what I hope for in every project--a sea-change, a rich and satisfying result, a Place that gives a lift to the heart. With art, color, and texture, with rich and real materials, I help clients achieve spaces that resonate. What have you been reading, or watching, that thrills you, what are the images and poems that you wish to inhabit? We'll pay close attention to function and universal design along the way (I do have a degree in the nuts and bolts, and years of experience in remodeling).

**Q: How to make a grey couch work in a beige space?** *(in Home Decorating)*

So I just got a new couch. Problem is, it looked much more beige/warm in the showroom. Now that I have it home it looks much more grey up against my warm beige walls.
I was initially going for a cream, camel leather with black accents vibe, but it doesnt seem like that will work now with the tone of this couch. I also already have a coffee table and tv stand that look kind of disconnected now with this couch. Any color scheme ideas to tie all these pieces together with throw pillow, throw blankets, rug, art, etc? I am a renter so I cannot change the wall color. 
(Also no need to take the christmas decor into account lol). Thank you for any help!









Heres more of the idea I was heading towards before the couch came. Now the camel pillow i have was looking too orange on it:

A: Clarisa, those colors can work well together. Nature mixes neutrals, too! I second looking for a little more grey on the sofa (double down!), something like a pillow or two in soft charcoal with some texture, a couple of different sizes. The throw is OK by me. I'd like to see a larger, more solid lamp, as the sofa is so heavy by comparison--that little lamp would look better elsewhere. A rug is a great idea--go as big as you can, and maybe pull the sofa away from the walls a touch. I like Juniper's Vintage Market for vintage Turkish rugs. They're nicely worn in, washed, and re-bound. Good luck! Looks like you have a great room started there.

**Q: trying to avoid paint color chaos (living-dining-kitchen)** *(in Paint)*

We have settled on SW Pearly White for our entrance/halls and living room, and we are learning towards SW Niebla Azul for our dining room-- we like having a bit of color, but aren't sure if that will be too disconnected or intense? 

We also didn't know what to do for the kitchen-- a pop of color like SW Poinsettia? We also like muted greens like SW Restful. Or something more clearly connected to living/dining colors? There is a small guest room/office off the other side of the kitchen, and we were thinking SW Sea Salt, but again not sure how to make it all feel connected. We have gone back and forth on all of this for way too long and need to make final decisions in the next couple days--tempted to just give up and paint everything Pearly White...

A: If it's feasible, I'd highly recommend a consultation with a designer whose work you like. Paint is so easy to get wrong--even with the best qualifications and hard work! Colors change from one end of a wall to the other, at the very same moment, to say nothing of variations throughout the day and evening. The other colors around them affect them too--making small swatches painted on an already-colored wall hard to perceive clearly. This is not to say it's hopeless, just tricky! You have a lot of space here, and you want to feel really happy in it... maybe a bit of professional help would be worthwhile. If not, give yourself very large sample areas to look at with each color you explore. Best of luck! It looks like a great house.

**Q: exterior Renovation Ideas (1959 residence)** *(in Landscape Design)*

This is a family member’s mid-century 1959 carport ranch. Exterior is original, but for door, and is looking to update. Located in Central Florida. Thoughts welcomed!

A: It does look at bit confused between MCM and hacienda, but still charming! I miss these Florida houses. I think I'd lean into the hacienda--if the budget is somewhat restricted, maybe grow bougainvillea with a climbing vine to cover those spindly carport columns. I like Dig Doug's image, just select a door that leans Spanish in style, in natural wood if possible, and at least paint the brick shutters to blend into the stucco. Inside, you can go as MCM as you like.

**Q: What color desk should I put in this small home office?** *(in Furniture)*

We are going to buy a new desk and decorate this small home office.
We have no idea what color desk would look good here. Any suggestions are welcome. 
Some background, the room that was once an entryway then sewing room and now office.

A: As a lover of weird little nooks like that, and for a modest budget, I'd suggest getting those shelves covered with as many old books as you can get--fill them in, with a minimum of other stuff. I'd paint the ceiling an interesting color, like a nice green, and use a solid-color Roman shade at the window to coordinate with the ceiling (the ceiling in white is just too much contrast with the paneling, and makes it look tired). A curtain is fine too, especially if you can make that yourself--get some terrific fabric. If you have a single fixture in the middle of the ceiling, try to buy another single fixture with multiple lights hanging out of it on cords--IKEA has had these in the past, and I bought one online (Amazon?) with 10 frosted bulbs hanging out of it on cords, which I've threaded around the twigs of a large branch so there is light throughout the room. You wouldn't need so many, and make sure it's dimmable. Then add an inexpensive adjustable up-light in the corner to bounce some light off of the wall and shelf underside (make sure to use warm bulbs everywhere). Your desk is fine for now, although I love the green suggestions! I think addressing the room envelope will really give you the most impact, though.

**Q: Hi, what is the cabinet color /stain/brand? Wall color? Beautiful!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: You know, I've used it in a few different homes here in Washtenaw and it's one of my favorites. But definitely get a sample! They offer a "mini-door" that's a good size for judging color and carrying around. You're welcome!

Can you tell me the source for the table and benches? Thanks!

A: The clients purchased these themselves, and I don't remember where. It was a large retail chain such as World Market, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, etc. I'm sorry I can't be of more help!
