There were NO complaints on the quality of the work, the issue was that the client had "bitten off more than they could chew" so to speak with this entire project. Their only issue was that they didn't want to spend the amount of money that the project was costing. > > Later the client approached me privately and said: a) that they were impressed with my work and b) that they would like to hire me to continue the project but for less money than my original price. > > Since they still owed me money for the work that we had completed, and since they owed a HUGE amount of money to the general contractor, I decided that it was not worth the financial risk to keep going with the project. > > I can only assume that this review is sour grapes due to me not continuing the project at a reduced rate. **★★★★★ — cynthiasage, May 2015** > We are in the process of completing the construction of a new home in Princeton NJ. The house has red oak hardwood floors, hardwood columns going up to a vaulted ceiling and stairs leading to a loft area with a balustrade. We hired Ben Barnett to stain the stair railings, columns and balustrade in a color to compliment the floors which had a clear finish. Ben provided many samples of stain colors to help us choose the one that would work best. Ben and his crew carefully sanded, applied stain and polyurethane where indicated, touched up the paint where necessary and completely cleaned up the work area when the job was completed. Ben was always courteous and responsive when we needed to contact him. The finished job looks fantastic. The first job Ben and his employees did for us was to paint the entire interior of our large antique farmhouse after we had completed a massive restoration project. We have hired him for several projects since then including painting several rooms, and the prep and painting of the exterior of the oldest part of the house-which is some 240 years old( what a job!). The work he has done for us over the years has included power washing, minor repair of exterior siding and windows as well as cleaning and resealing two mahogany porches. We trust Ben be in our home and on our farm, he and his employees are conscientious, hard working, thoughtful of us and our property and the caliber of their work is EXCELLENT. I've always lived in old, wood frame, plaster and lath houses usually with full basements. I am looking to buy in Sonoma County where, in my price range, everything seems to be '50's to '60's ranches on concrete slabs. I'm having a hard time adjusting since I consider these houses to be inferior in structural integrity and workmanship. My realtor tells me that the structural part could be untrue because of improvements in materials over the years. She is mostly mum about workmanship. I need reassurance in order to get over what may just be an irrational prejudice. Also I've considered buying a not-too-bad fixer upper as a way of giving myself some control over the soundness of construction and to escape the cookie cutter remodels everywhere. (No more stainless steel/Darth Vader kitchens pleeese!) Of course I don't know any contractors in the Sonoma area and have little experience beyond the usual DIY home owner maintenance. Oh yes and I'm a widow (of a guy who could do it all) attempting this all on my own, help! A: Your welcome : ) **Q: Should we paint oak cabs white or too much work vs hiring someone to d** *(in Paint)* do it? A: There are two main reasons why it might be easier to hire someone. The first reason is that kitchen cabinets require a lot of work to do them right. In addition to the normal prep involved in say painting a bookshelf, one must degrease cabinets carefully to insure any grease from cooking doesn't interfere with the new paints adhesion. Also all the doors have to be removed (as well as all hinges and hardware so they don't get any paint on them). These extra steps all add up time-wise. The second reason is that it is a huge inconvenience to have your whole kitchen taken apart and unusable for the duration of the project. This can be compounded by the fact that you may be at work during the day and painting at night. This means you would only be able to paint a few hours a night, which means the loss of your kitchen for a longer time. A professional would be there all day every day until the work is done which would translate into less time with your kitchen in chaos. Any other room in the house is not that much of an inconvenience if you cannot use it, but the kitchen is really tough to have out of commission. Then there is the dust control. When you are sanding the cabinet frames you need to have good dust control so that no dust gets all over your food or pots and pans in the cabinets. (I am assuming here that you are just painting frames and doors, not the inside of the cabinets.) A pro can quickly cover the inside of the cabinets with plastic, and will have sanders that have Hepa vacuum hookups both of which will insure no dust gets where it shouldn't be. I hope that helps. **Q: Need help with matching paint colors** *(in Paint)* we are painting a baby's room Benjamin Moore's Blanched Coral on the upper half of the walls. We would like to paint the low half in white --but can't seem to settle on the "right" white. Would appreciate recommendations and help identifying the perfect white to match up with blanched coral --thanks A: Try a swatch of Benjamin Moore "Atrium White" against the Blanched Coral. It is basically a white with a very subtle pink tone to it. If you like how they look together you may want to consider putting the atrium white on the upper half of the walls since it is the lighter color of the two. **Q: Popcorn ceiling** *(in Design Dilemma)* What can be done with old popcorn ceiling? A: It can absolutely be scraped off, If you lay 2 mil plastic on the floor and use blue painters tape to hold the plastic up over the closet door(s) and room door(s) you should be able to contain the mess-especially the dust. **Q: Teenage daughter, into music & Goth. Wants to re-decorate bedroom** *(in Design Dilemma)* Her room now has white furniture and white full size bed. I told her she or we could sand down her furniture and she can paint it or hand paint because she is artistic. Any thoughts? Also any web sights that you would recommend for accessories and what about paint colors? She wants black walls, black carpet, but I told her no. Help would be appreciated. Thanks A: I agree with bichonbabe, that is important for teenagers. If it is still too much for you to handle, you could compromise by painting one wall black as an accent wall. Your daughter will really appreciate that you allowed her to have control over her living space. My (artist) Aunt painted her room black back in the sixties and my grandmother was really conservative. I was surprised when I heard that family story but I am sure it helped my Aunt at the time, my Grandmother was a little controlling. Really, really loving and a wonderful person, but a touch controlling from the force of her character. **Q: need help picking a paint color for teenage daughter's bedroom** *(in Design Dilemma)* te her dresser and pillow from the bedding... any suggestions? Get a few options that you can live with and then ask her to choose.
