I felt the design and permits process went well. The Project Manager kept me and my husband informed throughout the process. During the construction phase it went well overall. Construction isn't perfect but overall the team handled things well to my satisfaction and met their contract obligations. We did chose to go with higher end finishes so we did get a change order for those but everything else stayed on budget and on track with timeline. Quality was good and to our satisfaction. My only recommendation is making finishes selections a little sooner. While it wasn't an issue nor did it create delays, it would have been a bit less stressful on our end to make selections. Not a big deal but just a recommendation. Maybe during the design phase or start of construction. Subcontractors frequently stop work due to non-payment by the company, even though I have paid in full. Frequent excuses and missed deadlines are the norm. This review is based on actual facts. We contracted with Urbatect in September 2023 to build an ADU with a contractual obligation to finish the project within 6 months. This project still has to complete after 2 years and 5 months! The company employs the cheapest possible labor and did not pay many of the sub-contractors who have threatened to put a lien on our property! The work quality is poor and many items had to be redone several times before they were acceptable by the inspector. The company also has a consumer complaint with Contractors State License Board (CSLB) at this time. Beware of this company and do not give your business to them! **★ — HU-258142153, Feb. 2026** > Started working with this company 12/2024. It is now Feb. 2026 with no end insight. Contractors don't show up when scheduled and when asked for an explanation you get none. You are asked for large sums for money without a breakdown on what goes into the cost. We have had to bring in two levels of management with empty promises. Manager cannot even oversee the project because he is in San Diego. We are in Oakland. They will try to tell you delays are due to permits and such but the actuality of it is they do not come on site to do the work. This project was supposed to be completed March but has since been pushed out to August for unknown reasons. You will not get itemized invoices. We have spent $150,000 to have one wall removed and 600 ft of concrete poured which isn't even level. There is typically one contractor on site even though we are supposed to be paying for 2 and a supervisor. The contract often says he cannot continue work because he hasn't received funds from the company. They have zero corporate professionalism. They have no dashboards to monitor progress, they do not schedule in advance, we had to mandate a weekly meeting. I did write a review before but they said I wasn't a client (contract is in husband's name) so this is to say I am an actual paying customer to this vendor. We will always be grateful to Eric and his hardworking team at Urbatect for their work to get our rebuilding project design completed and through permitting. Eric kindly rescued us when we were in a very difficult and complex situation with our complete home rebuild. Our original architect had backed out with most of the work for the permit submittal nowhere near completion. Urbatect prepared all of the permit submittal documents/plans required by Santa Cruz County very quickly, taking into account the direction of our Geotechnical engineer and the many State and Local building codes specific to the build site that made the project a challenge – Seismic Zone, Debris Flow Zone, Wildland Urban Interface, Title 24 etc. Most counties and design firms are unfamiliar with the specific requirements for a wildfire rebuild project. As homeowners, we had been very involved with the difficult process of influencing the County to provide clear and reasonable guidance on their expectations. It was critical that Urbatect was willing to collaborate with us to address the very specific requirements that we had learned through our interactions with the various County agencies involved. There are many horror stories among the fire victims – Urbatect rescued us from ours.
