Here in PA, they are a perennial. They are adaptable to zones 3-9, but I have found they tend to do better in climate zones a little warmer. They get about 2' high and wide and are a long lasting bloomer starting in June and then sporadically throughout late summer into autumn. You can get a better repeat bloom from them if you shear them back in August, removing the deadheads of the old flowers. They are a fantastic shade of yellow that I find fits into most garden palettes. Here I have them paired with the purple blooms of Geranium 'Rozanne'. **Q: Plants** *(in Photo Questions)* Hello! I love this beautiful garden you've built! Could you please name the plants on this picture? I'm a beginner in gardening and I live in the same area, so I'd like to plant some of these in my garden as well. Thank you! A: Hi Natalia, The small flowering tree in the back is a plum cherry. The flowering shrubs behind the water feature are oak leaf hydrangeas. In front and below the water feature is amsonia. The large evergreen to the right of the water pump is a birds nest spruce. In front of the spruce is catmint and the grasslike plant at the very bottom is liriope. I hope this helps you. Good luck with your garden. Im a city girl just moved to the country. Thanks so much!!! A: Hi kalewong, Thanks for the question. This hand pump was found at an auction actually. It doesn't physically pump the water but is more of an aesthetic piece. The water pump and hose are placed through the pump and out of sight. I'd recommend looking around for architectural salvage shops and warehouses. They have awesome finds. We have a few here in Philadelphia so I am sure with some digging you might be able to find one wherever you are. Should I be more tradditional and formal or relaxed landscape - and how should I achieve it. I keep talking myself into a circle on what would work best. A: Such a beautiful home! As a landscape designer in the Philadelphia suburbs, I come across homes exactly like yours right in my own neighborhood. I would certainly, as many other members have already recommended, consult a landscape designer to help shape your outdoor space to reflect your area, the functionality you'd want to maintain, and the overall look you like. With a home such as yours, I would recommend a marrying of the traditional and relaxed. By creating structure within the garden, through plants or hardscape, and filling it with the looseness of a more organic approach, you will pull the aesthetic and style of the home into the landscape and allow you to still reflect your personal lifestyle. The biggest thing I want to emphasize is scale. Your landscape and gardens should pull your property together and connect your house with the land, meshing the two together seamlessly. One of the primary things I see when I drive around,is a lack of understanding when it comes to scale. Don't be afraid to come well away from the foundation of your house.
